Does anyone else play games in this series? Recent entries have been Tales of Vesperia, Tales of Graces F, Tales of Xillia and just recently Tales of Xillia 2. You may also have known the series on the PS1 with Tales of Destiny, or Tales of Symphonia for the Gamecube.
If you're a fan of JRPGs and haven't given this series a try i'd highly recommend it. Combat is NOT turn-based. You're free to run about instanced combat areas and switch between characters on the fly. All monsters are visible on the map, so most combat can be entirely avoided. Vesperia is available for the Xbox 360, but the rest are PS3 exclusives, I believe. A good jump-in point would be Tales of Xillia. Tales of Xillia 2 is a direct sequel to the first game, but Vesperia and Graces are both stand alone titles that share enemy, item, and spell types.
The next entry into the series will be Tales of Zesteria, which is scheduled for release in 2015 for the PS3. There's no point in waiting if you're on the fence, though. All the modern Tales games have aged quite well due to their style of graphics.

Tales of Zesteria will be out tomorrow on PS4, and if Steam is to be trusted, tonight at 7pm EST on PC.
Reviews put it around a 77 on Metacritic, which is not too shabby for a JRPG.
If you pre-order on Steam before it is released, you will get Tales of Symphonia on PC for free, which will be coming out in 2016 for $20. Symphonia was considered one of, if not the best game in the Tales series.

I loved Tales of Destiny (especially the remake on PS2, Japanese-only) and Symphonia. I bought Abyss and Legendia, but didn't play much. Also played Vesperia, but didn't love it. Haven't played anything since. They seem like the same game being remade repeatedly..

That's definitely the main complaint with the series. This game differs by having an open world design instead of an overmap, but otherwise, little has changed with the formula.

Was Symphonia 2 any good? I think it (Symphonia 1) stands out as the only JRPG I've ever played where I prefered the English dub to the original. Actually, strike that, Disgaea 1 as well, albeit it was an SJRPG.

It was mediocre, some people enjoyed it but on the whole it was seen as a lesser experience.

Let me know how you like Zestiria. I'm going to hold off on buying it for a while because I'm busy with Battlefront and Fallout (and sexing up my wife).

The next entry in the Tales series, Tales of Berseria, will be coming to the West, possibly at the same time as it's debut in Japan.

Berseria looks amazing, love the design of the main character. I just wish they'd go back to Vesperia's art style. That cel-shading was beautiful, and the Tales games released since then have looked pretty plasticky.

Agreed. Cel-shading also ages far better than most other graphical techniques.
