View Full Version : The Hurling Warrior

As someone new to the hurling scene, I've got a few questions!
1) Roundtimes are related to strength bonus (similar to ranged), although aiming seems to add +1 RT that cannot be negated regardless of the additional strength bonus (unlike ranged, similar to melee). Is this intentional or something that has fallen through the cracks?
2) Bonding doesn't seem fully functional with my returner. I get the AS boost and I'm assuming the weapon returning, but it's a no go on the various flares/abilities associated with bonding. Is there any speculation on when if ever this might be looked at?
3) Hurling and berserking. Similar to #2, it just swings your weapons like clubs and doesn't bother to hurl them. There's obviously some logistical challenges to conquer here, but I was curious if anyone knew anything or whether or not it'd been brought up before.
Thanks for all your help ahead of time.

Can anyone even hurl a maul without injury? Maybe only a giant or a dwarf?

Would that cause injuries?

If the weapon is too heavy, it'll cause injuries, yes.

1: Intentional, you can hurl weapons with much higher DFs then ranged weapons, although it seems sometime recently they fixed some of the rt so you can't hurl non thrown weapons in under 5 seconds.
2: I think it was just an oversight or something, likely depends on which system came out first though, thrown or bonding.
3: Intentional, come on now, thrown/ranged weapons aren't things you berserk with, frothing at the mouth you are only interested in smashing your foe not chucking random items at them, you aren't some woman in the kitchen.

1. Wonky, always has been. It skips some RT lengths as well, is not a clear progression.
2. Blows. Unfortunately, they were developed before hurling became effective, and all their messaging is melee. A rewrite would be required.
3. Berserking is strictly melee. Same with mstrike. Consider it a bonus option.
4. Beware inanimate objects.

1) Partially correct. Hurling RT is a function of STR, combined DEX/AGI bonus, weapon weight (both main and off hand if you're two weapon hurling), weapon "throwability", armor training, and your encumbrance. I put up some charts in this thread a while back. Weapons that aren't part of the group designed to be thrown have an inherent penalty. Being not completely trained for your armor has a penalty, even if you have a high enough DEX/AGI bonus to cheat it in melee. If you're getting the "deliberate force" messaging that comes with a +3 RT mod that can be reduced with DEX/AGI. It's a pain, but you can get the same RT as an aimed ranged weapon attack if you manage all your factors.
Look for username Tep2.

2) It's been brought up a few times, specifically in that thread. Fun fact! Hurling does count towards your BOND bonus "flare". I used to use a little script to remind myself whenever I had a double swing coming up after the appropriate number of throws so I could swing.
3) I've brought it up privately, but honestly I wouldn't hold your breath.
Hurling is completely do-able sans the auction level toys. Will it be frustrating at times? You bet. But I did it for years and you can too.

4. Beware inanimate objects.
Regardless of profession, hurling definitely needs the <hurl> verb similar to attack or incant <spell>. I'd think that'd be an easy fix?

Are you saying that my handaxe can be aimed in 3s versus the 4s I have now? I think I have a 30 str bonus and a 50 dex/agi bonus atm.

Nope. To the best of my knowledge you could never get around that +1 for aimed bow attacks either though.

>aim clear
You're now no longer aiming at anything in particular.
>fire
You nock a wooden arrow in your short bow.
You fire a wooden arrow at a rolton!
AS: +15 vs DS: +5 with AvD: +20 + d100 roll: +47 = +77
A clean miss.
The wooden arrow disappears into the local environs.
Roundtime: 3 sec.
R>get 1 arrow from my pack
You remove a single wooden arrow from a bundle of wooden arrows.
>aim head
You're now aiming at the head of your target when using a ranged weapon, or while ambushing.
>fire rol
You nock a wooden arrow in your short bow.
You fire your short bow at a rolton but the shot flies wide of the target!
The wooden arrow zips past its target to the ground.
Roundtime: 3 sec.
Obviously 506 or 1035 would reduce it further. My bard machine gun firing my returner at an enemy head with a 1s RT is about as blatantly OP as I've seen.

The bond feature being "in queue" can be fun. I have never calculated it out like Tep; I don't swing enough to make it worth it. Knowing that if I take a straight up swing I'll get a bonding effect is occasionally handy.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Jeril again.

While I totally appreciate a paladin's spiritual bond with a singular weapon, I still think as a warrior you should be able to bond to more than one weapon. Maybe however many weapons you chose to WSpec in but only one of each base or something.
I think this should translate to hurling as well where in if you've bonded to it you can throw it as a returner. Sure, it would drop the price of unlimited bandos and hurling returners but it's more in line with making Throwing a viable base for squares. Those items will still have their usefulness and price point for hybrid builds.

we can't even get full bonding interaction for "supported" melee weapon styles without getting a specifically scripted weapon (splitters).

Is there anyone who would be opposed to warriors berserking with thrown weapons? That is to say, if simu were to offer to fix it, is there anyone who would stand in their way?

Doesn't really seem logical to me because not every hurled weapon is a returner.

I think it would be better to create a few hurl specific CMans and leave Berserk alone.

Simutronics has never been good at syncing old systems with new ones, so you might as well just come up with something new.
