View Full Version : Shield Bash Modifiers

Was curious how the races stack up for shield bashing so I ran a quick test. All tests were done against giant rats EXCEPT elf which was done against rodents in Vaalor. I assume they're the same but I'm not sure.

Giantman, +10
Dark Elf, -20
Elf, -25
Erithian, -20
Human, -15
Dwarf, -15
Half-Krolvin, -10
Halfling, -40
Dark Elf, -20
Forest Gnome, -35

Huh, that's a big bonus for Giantman. I'd assume its about the same for other skills like trample?

I have a Halfling paladin I'm working up, I was already thinking of just grabbing defensive shield maneuvers and this makes it almost a certainty. Although shield strike might still be useful just to connect and get the guiding light flares from his shield.

My Giantman gets a 0 bonus/penalty when he tries and bash a rat. Maybe some other factors are involved?

what size shield were you using?

just did a quick check in kobolds. human paladin using greatshield... bonus ranged from +15 to +25. using large and small shield bonus ranged from +5 to +15. have 5 ranks cman shield bash, 5 ranks tower shield focus

Everything in the tests were identical except the race. Used the starting reinforced shield.

Strength/Dex bonus all the same?

No, but that's a good point. I could pretty easily test that by taking the human and nuking the str/dex bonuses to see if the value changes.

I think there's a penalty for size differences. It's really hard to hit something as small as a rat.

I would pick something humanoid of medium size... kobolds are still small, I think; maybe a lesser orc or hobgoblin?

For shield bash you get a bonus the larger you are compared to the creature, same with tackle, bullrush, charge, ect. Hamstring is the only one I can think of that works the other way around.

Still, I expect the bonus/penalty to remain linear. If we go up a size then everyone's bonus would just shift in whatever direction.
