View Full Version : Hunting vaespilons as a spike thorn ranger

Okay so...should I just avoid hunting plane 5 altogether or what?
I tried casting web at them but their spirit TD is way too high for that to be effective.
I can cast sounds on them well enough but that only hinders their spells 1 out of 5 times.
I tried casting Sun Burst at them first to stun them and that worked pretty well as long as there was just one vaespilon in the room with me.
But as soon as there are two or more in the room it seems like I'm just screwed. Sun Burst doesn't last long enough to keep it up on two critters constantly and eventually those vaespilons will ewave me then most likely before I get out of that it's implode city. Or they'll just skip the foreplay and go straight to instant death via implode.
Any advice or just skip them?

If you are in voln poopy pants you can use symbol of holiness on them depending on your stats. And don't vines work on them?

Vines do work but not very well.
Maybe my level is the problem? I'm level 91 and thought I should be able to handle them. Maybe I should wait until I'm equal to or higher than their level?

Levels will help with that. What stance are you casting vine in? Offensive is best, just go back to guarded while in cast rt.

Ah, I was just doing advanced, didn't know it made a difference.

My last death in the scatter was partly my fault for forcing a fetish master into offensive before it cast vine, stance makes a world of difference, although I've only ever cast it from guarded and offensive, advanced should be better then the former but no idea how much better then later it would be. Good luck!
I never used spike for them. If they have a chance to unstun, that's when you get vaporized. They crit easy enough if you can aim a weapon. If you can't dispatch them fairly quickly I'd recommend skipping them.

Yeah but all I hunt with is 616, it's sort of my Ranger's thing ;)
The best thing is to avoid plane 5 altogether then right? Cause like if I just run past them they are going to prep their implode and when I enter the room again kill me good.

Well if the vine idea doesn't work, I'd say to just skip it. And no, if they prep implode and you aren't there when they go to cast they'll cast an open void, which you will then wander near or in front of and get splatted probably.
As a weed mage, even at cap with 162 ranger spell ranks, some things just suck ass to hunt with 616. Not sure if its an enemy armor thing or what but it only takes a couple casts to see if I'm going to be able to hunt a new enemy efficiently enough or not.

Mass calm works well when you have multiples. I'm not sure I understand your issue... you listed problems with a few Ranger spells and said you're a spike hunter - well use your spike? That works very well on them...

Are vaespilons puncture resistant or something? I'd imagine spike thorn would tear them to shreds, but I don't exactly use any puncture based stuff either so I don't know if vaespilons are puncture resistant or something. I just set things on fire.

It takes at least 2-4 casts to kill them and it rarely disables them so they usually get a spell or two off before they die.
Was looking for a way to disable them long enough to kill them.

I don't know if they're puncture resistant but I do know some of my Spike Thorn casts would be like:
40 damage
1 damage
20 damage
1 damage
20 damage
Just checked Krakiipedia; apparently they are puncture resistant.

What about just ambushing them in the face?

But I don't train in a weapon, my Spike Thorn Ranger is Thug life yo! Spike Thorn 4 lyfe!
ETA: Okay, I take that back. My ranger does train in a weapon but it's just for DS :p

2-4 casts seem reasonable for your level. What have you hunted where you routinely get one-shot kills with spike? I used to always stun them with spike first, then finish them off with a blade. Never had issues stunning them, but I can't really recall at what level that became the easy way. How's your Fury when you get multiples?

Plane 3 has been a cakewalk for me thus far but I'm outgrowing the place. I can probably stay there another level but I like my Icemule, I hate having to go elsewhere for hunting grounds :(

I haven't tried it out yet, I probably should. I'm always worried about accidentally killing someone with those kinds of spells though.

Kaedra says you get bonus points for killing innocent bystanders.

At your level you should consider OTF. They have the undead there at night to keep your spins up, and as a fellow ThornSorc, it's super easy to hunt in OTF. The only things you'll need to have something other than Spike for are Constructs (which I avoid) and War Griffins (which I use a bow on).
I went from 60-100 as a full spike ranger. From 80-100 I went Aqueducts (EN) till 84ish, Ithzir (EN) till 91, then finished off on the third floor of Nelemar (TI) where I continue to hunt. All of which was pure cake as a spike ranger.
Oh and I learned the hard way that in all those places you should use a plain 4x bow and an arrow in your right hand heh.

You are now in an offensive stance.
>
>You whisper quietly into the wind, summoning the forces of nature as you prepare Call Swarm.
Your spell is ready.
You gesture at a vaespilon.
Cast Roundtime 3 Seconds.
>
A faint buzzing sound begins then grows louder as a small dark cloud forms and begins to move about wildly!
The swarm zips behind vaespilon and charges into it, knocking it to the ground!
Assuming you're 1x summoning lore, that's 14 or 15 seconds of RT and prone plus continuing cycles for 15 mana. It will pretty much take one vaesp out of the fight for good. It might not help you kill it faster, but it will certainly help your crowd control. 615 is one of the most underrated ranger spells out there.
