To understand the brilliance of Robin Williams, consider that he was (i) one of the most influential comedians of his generation (and the next, frankly), and (ii) his best roles were in dramatic films.

Just a rare talent.

His comedy always seemed too manic for my taste but, it's sad he succumbed to his depression.

I think this is almost always true of comedians who turn to acting. Maybe it's because it's more startling when they aren't being funny.

This is truly a sad day. I hope they find out something freaky happened, like autoerotic asphyxiation or something, because suicide for this man just seems too horrible. He was a genius, and an impact on so many people. Sorry to see him go. Very sorry.

Let's just make sure it's noted that Jim Carey is part of the reason you said "almost" always.

MY first thought as well.

I don't think it was sexual in nature. Look at his history. Money doesn't equal happiness.

Well I don't think of Jim Carey as a comedian. I haven't laughed at anything he's done in years.

Highly recommend his standup from 20 yrs or so ago... Damned funny. Crass, but funny. Not that crass is not appreciated in these parts....

The last comedian death I missed was George Carlin.

By that I mean I missed the person.

He's in that same boat as Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy in that they used to be funny as fuck and then suddenly became unfunny.

Carey is still the least funny out of all of them though and is the only one to my knowledge that tried to become all serious and shit which just made him suck even more.

I think we've established before that most of the people on this forum are 30+, but for any of you younger than that who may not have seen some of his earlier work in the late 80's and early 90's, it was some of his finest, imo. Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poet's Society, Awakenings, The Fisher King...all amazing performances, and some of my favorite movies of all time, not just favorite movies that he's in.

I am sure you can google it but Conan dropped the funny and told the audience of the death, then they seemed to get emotional over the loss. I was impressed that they stopped show and turmed last few minutes into a rememberance

Wow, just wow was my only thought as I read the news. I was upset to hear he was gone. The man was an icon I grew up watching and laughing at him. From Alidin as a kid to his standup when I was older.

Watched Dead Poet's Society last night. O captain, my captain.

This is the first celebrity death that has actually impacted my emotions. Just terrible.

I just watched What Dreams May Come the other day.. it's always the film I go to when I'm feeling kind of down about not having a mom, worrying what happens to people after they commit suicide, etc. Probably one of my favorite films, ever. Much more poignant now :( It's so sad and horrifying what's happened. I really hope his soul has found peace now.

I think John Ritter was mine. I grew up on Three's Company, and Jack Tripper was one of the best characters to ever be on a TV screen because Ritter ruled so much at it.

I once saw a forklift lift a crate of forks. It was way to literal for me.

I'm not at all a fan of his straight acting. I haven't seen all his movies. The ones I've seen, he just seems to me that all his characters blend into the exact same emotionally vulnerable Robin Williams persona. Then again, I have this problem with most recognizable actors and actresses, so it's no slight to him.

I don't follow the entertainment scene, had no idea he had addiction/mental health issues. Sucks for his family.

That was later 90's, I'm assuming more people have probably seen that. Personally, I didn't care much for the movie as a whole, but Williams played his part well.

There are definite similarities in his characters in most movies...Patch Adams, Mrs. Doubtfire, Hook, Jumanji...this is the Robin Williams most people think of when they think of him. If these are the movies you've seen, you should check out Insomnia and One Hour Photo. Very different characters from his usual. Personally, I'm more fond of his "straight acting" than any of his comedies.

People always say this is such a horrible movie but I've always rather liked it. It's an absolute tragedy.

Loved Good Will Hunting, Insomnia, Hook etc etc. Even Jack, (which was weirdly directly by Coppola). A real loss, and my heart goes out to his family.

God that would be hilarious. Rosie could have been his love interest who doesn't have confidence as a woman to go on a date, so Williams dresses up as Mrs D to give her advice and lead her to him (As a man), but she ends up falling for Mrs D and Rosie then realizes she's a lesbian. Now Williams is torn between loving her as Mrs. D or showing Rosie that he's actually Williams in costume proving to Rosie that she is not a lesbian but is actually in love with Williams.

I smelled an emmy.
