View Full Version : PC first impressions.

I was talking to a friend of mine in game, and brought up our little corner once in awhile, and they said they didn't like the forum. The people, topics. the drama.
I think it's entertaining when I feel like being idle but want to be amused and it's sometimes informative.
I tried to recall my first impression of the forum, I guess I lurked way before I joined back in 2003. I don't know why I didn't join right away, I guess because I felt the same way my friends did. My first impression was really bad, but I was drawn. Kinda like Highway + accident = me slowing down to watch what's going on.
I initially thought it was chaotic, full of drama, flame and insult. If I was going to walk in a pack of lions. Naturally, I felt like I needed to put up defenses, and show I have fangs too. I tried to read as far back as I could and sheesh. I was a real cunt. I thought to myself, what was I thinking? Why did I say that? That's a horrible thing to say! Of course, I knew I said it at the heat of the moment.. and know I don't feel that way towards people now. I still felt bad that it brought out the worst in me. I thought of leaving and stopped posting but I couldn't.
However, I did try to change how I word things, because most of the time.. it comes out differently, translated/read differently. Which is sometimes, the opposite of what I'm trying to say. I got to know people, knew their posting style so to not take it seriously, less cynicism, letting bygones be bygones.. and all together ignoring trolls.
That's why I thought backlash's getting to know you thread was such a good way of getting to know each other, I recommend reading it.
I guess what I'm trying to convey is that don't judge a book by it's cover. I know it's been said many times.. but it can apply to everything, especially people. The forum grew on me, you fucks. I  you all.
What brought you here and what was your first impression?

First day I came over I had some questions about rogues I think. Instant answers and I was hooked ever since.

What about the people? first impression on the people. I'm sure we've all had our assumptions and misconceptions. We've had our own little arguements, that led to all time hatefest, or goodbye threads. I love those goodbye threads. :lolwave:

I was brought in by a discussion that someone initiated when Snowy killed teeoncy. They said it was because Teeoncy had stolen Snowy's boyfriend which wasnt the case so I corrected them on that. It then developed into a thread or two - mostly originating from X - regarding playing snowy as a child.
I think I had seen the boards a couple of times prior to that when people pointed out threads of interest to me and my friends and I used to call them the swearing boards, due to the vast differences in what was allowed here compared to the officials.
From the time I first posted I was pretty much hooked. I dont think I was especially popular at first - hey, some things never change - but I kinda get used to that :P
I think its a great place and, although some of the poeple here I wouldnt piss on if they were on fire, think there are some great posters who I have a lot of respect for - insofar as you can respect a bunch of people you never met.

I was googling for help with converting my empath, since G4 made em unviable. :(
I didn't sign up, I just lurked for awhile, and I didn't even know there was the option of "Today's Posts" so I thought the board was slow/unpopulated.
I joined after a month and then saw all the nifty options. :)
First impressions .... most of you seem to be close, like you've known each other IG for a long time, so I don't always know what everyone's talking about, and I don't get a lot of the back and forth that goes on. I avoid the flaming threads ... don't get me wrong, I READ em, I just don't participate. Seems like a decent group of people with a lot of knowledge and personality. I don't know any of you IG, but I'm staying around anyhow.

I came here once waaay before I registered, because someone had put one of my characters names on a list if crap names. It was before the boards were in this format though. I thought everyone was super bitchy and didn't come back.
Then... There was the Gracy thread.... I had to post in it and I got hooked, applied to be a mod and lived happily ever after.
I guess first impressions can be wrong, we sometimes scare new posters away too, just got to stick out the initial stage of being a noob. ;)

I came here when the Spot went tits up and people were like "FUCK THIS, I'M GOING TO THE PC BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE TO PUT UP WITH THIS BULLSHIT THERE"
The traffic and posters have kept me here ever since.
I came here because Methais sent me here a while back. Then I didn't post for like 8 months. I was a board monkey on the official boards. I slowly decided to gravitate here because I didn't like the people there.

I like the people and the format. Here there is alot more room for expression of opinion and that I like.
I came over when The-Spot died(only GS related thing I could get by the firewall at work), didn't like it so much, felt the people were very rude. Felt like the site takes alot of time away from GS because you end up reading posts more than RPing/Hunting.
Then somehow I became a mod on that other forum and soon an admin and couldn't deal with the lies and drama of forums.
Now I'm just here to find a few things...

I had been shown this site last year when a friend in the lands was getting a lot of crap talked about his character. It was quite overwhelming for me to read through the posts and find my way around. I forgot about it until a few months ago, but I can't remember what brought the topic of this website up.
I was warned that the PC would prolly just piss the hell outta me. Well..... he was right in some ways. I have to use caution when reading some topics, and bite my tongue a lot of the time to avoid debating. I think I'm starting to know the people I need to let talk and and not confront, the antagonists, the bitchers, etc.
And it's annoying seeing responses to a post that really weren't needed. Just to have their "name in a post" or to "have the last say".
It obviously made me feel like an outsider coming here. How to explain - a lot of you posters have been around for a long time and have a relationship (this is used very loosely, as some are positive, some negative) established.
I'm still trying to decide if I like the PC. Other than it's almost the only way I can be in contact with someone anymore.

From GS, to TheSpot, to the PC. Natural transition. I stay because I enjoy so many of the people here, and the interesting conversations that often ensue. I don't intimidate easily, if at all, so the flaming never really had an effect on me. I just ignored it, for the most part and sought out the worthy parts of ongoing conversations.

Ditto that, same thing for me.
For the longest time though I was just a lurker back when Buckwheat was the Head Mod.
I think how I found it was there was this anti-GSIII website that had a link to it on there, or someone gave me the link. I can't remember.
Until recently, though I've been too busy to post. I mostly lurk unless there's a topic that entertains me enough that I have to post in it.

I came here when they pulled the general folder for suggested improvements on GS. They've since put it back. I got out of the habit of posting on the official boards though for the same reasons a few others do: posts pulled for nonsense, too much ass kissing, nonexistent ability to actually have a debate etc.
Bucky was still the admin here, then. My first impression was a very warm one.

We're not all loveable, let's face it. There are some of us only a mother could love, and even such a mother might do so only because of obligation. :D
Bethany made a thread about Edine, and me the player, which is what brought me here. I hated you all and still do.:rant::fu:

I don't honestly remember when I came here, or what it was for.. I THINK it was cause Tayre linked me to here during the whole Gracy conflicts, and I just never left.
I thought at the time some of the people were mean, rude as hell, or just downright disgusting. Of course I don't have a thick skin, I don't post as much as most people, and now I just take people with a grain of salt. Trying to figure out the difference between peoples posting styles, and whats just their personality has been my thing. Some people are just nice by nature or abrasive by nature, and now that I kinda have a better handle on that, its not so bad and I love it here.

I was asked to make a post because of the Gracy thread. Kinda stuck around and PC grew on me. Applied to be a mod, and here I am :)
I came here by recommendation of Zeyrin through whispers in game. My purpose was to view a photo of Lalana... I'm not embarassed to admit. Although I couldn't find it in the massive pic thread, I started reading the other threads that were current and have been here ever since.
My first impression of the people here was a pretty good one actually since I hadn't seen the threads that mentioned my characters name, just yet. Even so, the posters seemed like an opinionated bunch who didn't hold back much of anything.
I was a little slow in adjusting to my own posting style, but once I dropped the in game persona it was all good, even the flaming as I'm not easily riled.
I like people with strong opinions who aren't afraid to argue, debate, and defend them and so it was pretty natural for me to jump right in, chaos and all. :)

I came because someone linked me.. they were getting badmouthed or something, and told me to look cause it was funny. I dunno, it was like, two years ago, so I don't remember exactly.
Also, let's bump the Gracy Thread! http://forum.gsplayers.com/viewthread.php?tid=168

I came over sometime during the previous version of the boards. As to an exact date, I've no idea.
When I first came here, the cliques and flamefests were a little intimidating. Soon afterwards, I was knee deep in the shit, and I haven't left yet, and I doubt I will, seeing as how I'm a MAN OF GREAT POWER here.

I came here originally because Sintik linked me to a Seany/Ganryu thread. I instantly loved the people because of how they were tearing him a new ass. I didn't really start posting until the "Deeding Rsen" thread started and I had some info to contribute. I was a bit intimidated by the other posters at first because I didn't want to get flamed, but I got over that pretty quickly.

I got the link from I think the link webpage from SIMU's own webpage wayyyyyyy long ago.
I guess it was relatively soon after buckwheet made them.
I had been posting intermitently on the official boards and was interested in seeing some of the things that were hinted at on them but that could not be said openly for fear of a pulled post.
I was amazed at how pretty much anything could be and in fact was said, implied, alleged and the like. Cursing, GM's were named and specifics spoken in ways that would have had the Simu boards in meltdown mode.
I lurked for at least six months or so before building up my comfort level and my nerve to start posting.
I have always found facinating how many of our posters can seem so intimidating from a "distance" so to speak, yet be so much more easy to speak to once the ice is broken and the fronts are removed.
I have enjoyed and hope to continue enjoying the PC for it's diversity and also relative straight forwardness. I enjoy being able to talk to people very different from me and get a decent spread of points of view from a nice spectrum of people both here in the US and some abroad.
I know the PC has a reputation among some for being just a flamefest and curse filled forum, but I find it to be actually quite fair in most regards to most situations when presented. Sometimes the consensus will say the player was right, sometimes Simu, sometimes neither.
PC members listen to the situation and then offer their unfiltered opinions.
Yes I think newcomers can be put off by such a less censored and inhibited version of the officials, but it is that lack of rock solid cliques and openess that I enjoy that I think others come to as well after a getting to know you period.
I loves me the PC!

I had been reading the spot on and off for a little bit. PC split and started becoming popular and I just glanced at it every once in awhile. Then on the old boards (I wish I could find the thread) Celtar made a long, whiny, "I'm quitting" post which I think was about how he rerolled his character because of his age setting. Celtar was getting ripped apart and I registered to join in.
It was easy to fit in, although I didn't start fighting until much after I registered. The people that come here and get ripped apart are generally the people who register and then start shit right away. If you can't be accepted by most people on the PC, you have a problem.

I was directed to the PC by someone IG. I was amazed at the way people posted as I was a die hard GS board person.
I like the PC and I find that 95% of those who post to be great people. The other 5% either annoy me or at times frankly just scare me.

I think I found this site when I was doing research for the character idea that eventually became Jihna. Later on, I would spend hours giggling at these threads at work and not getting anything done. I still do that. The PC is my excuse not to work.
The PC is special because its many, many uncensored and varied opinions given by good and decent people from all walks of life. I like that. :)

Wasn't me.
When I started reading the boards people were still visiting and posting at the-spot, but these boards were getting more traffic. I think I have like 35 or so posts on the old PC before it moved here, so I probably wasn't there for long.
As for impressions of the PC, there were a handful of people whose opinions I respected, and a whole lot more people who I wouldn't trust to take down my order at a restaurant.
My opinion hasn't really changed.

Came to the PC by way of SR. Now I'm just trying to remember how the hell I got to SR....
Work sucks now, because some bastard there decided to call the main hospital and told them to block this site on the firewall. What the hell am I supposed to do now at the front desk? Patients don't walk by 24/7, and PC helps keep me awake because front desk sucks.

I had this problem at one job, but there is a browser setting that can bypass it. Some port number like 8080 I think. Anyone know specifics so the Korean doesn't fall asleep on the job and miss an emergency patient? Its a matter of life and death here!
I frequented The Spot dubbed Unofficial Gemstone Message boards mainly because the official GS boards sucked format wise and it was difficult getting any answers from anyone.
When Bucky split off and made his own boards, the PC, I went along too. Its been a while, but I think Bucky left because The Spot started to get heavily moderated? It was wild there, much like it is here. All the more outspoken people came here.
I used to post under a different handle. At one point I deprived myself of internet activity for a long time. When I came back I reinvented. The reason why I chose Backlash was because at the time we were having knock-down-drag-outs with aryan racists.
Oh yeah... I guess my impression of people back then was that they were whacked out crackheads and funny as hell. The biggest draw was being able to speak freely, within reason of course, compared to other stuffy boards.
PC for me is a weird sort of virtual circle of friends. Its defiantly grown into a community that I really enjoy. Having lived in major cities all my life its the diversity of people that turns me on. PC has that.
And yeah, its great when there isn’t much to do at work, and some nights, I’ll just surf the internet, read and post on the boards for entertainment.

Impossible to my knowledge. Computers are networked, and you can't change or load shit onto your computer unless you have admin keys.

I found this site completely by luck, really. I was trying to find places that people actually congregate and talk about GemStone that I could access while I was at work. Immediately I saw that there was actually a good deal of board activity here at PC. I've only been a member for a day or two now and I already love the place.
People have given me so much support in my little Sorcerer topic I created. It has really reminded me why I loved GemStone in the first place: A great player community.
Anyway - I'm personally thrilled that I found PC and I'm glad no one has taken it upon themselves to flame me off the boards. ;)

There are some people that I had misconception of when I first started posting. Alex and longshot. From ingame amunet, people had encounters with bob and thought of him to be very obnoxious. He was the same way to me here, not realizing his age. He's young but exceedingly smart compared to most boys his age and ever older. Intelligent but very obnoxious, I thought him to be immature. Until he did one thing, one insignificant thing to some people but mean't absolutely great deal to me. He went out of his way to apologize for his actions, after my cynicism. That just blew me away. I  alex ever since.
As for longshot. We all know how he is, like bob.. I handled it with utmost cynicsm, I certainly didn't see his side of the story coming. or so he says anyway :P
Oh I forgot Sintik. Well, it was just me really. I was an over-reacting idiot.
tada.. :shibby:
Edit: Oh, I started posting regularly during the teeoncy thing. It seems like incidents such as this, brings us all together.

I've been here a while. I got over here because of the dislike for the way the official boards were being run at the time. I also was here for the Thurfel thread that was a long time back and defended my friends back then.
Of course now I hardly play GS anymore, and I still am here and am a mod.:)
