Thread for campaigns you're backing with cash or supporting in spirit.

A friend of mine is selling at Crafty Bastards and is raising funds for her booth (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mollymoran/snarky-scouts-at-crafty-bastards-craft-fair/posts). It's a pretty big deal craft fair here.

I thought Kisckstarter was a site to connect con men with rubes.

I've been happy with some of the things I've done Kickstarter for. Ironically, they've been either shoes or video games. I've also been very unhappy about some of the things I've given money for. They've usually been games (Shadowrun Online is a particular standout, it sucks while Shadowrun Returns is good fun.) You just have to have a critical eye, like any product.

Most recently I supported Twin Souls, a stealth game which failed, regrettably.

I've always been leery of prefunding/preordering unless you know exactly what you're going to get. Even with something like Star Citizen which has met stretch goals over and over and over again the reality of the game when it's released probably won't mesh with what people expect of it. Once it comes out I'll make a judgement rather than buying in to the hype train.

Ha. Naw. I'm not for that life. Person with injured feet who likes the extra support since he stands/walks all day? Definitely.

Projects I've backed that I'm happy with: Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, The Banner Saga, Sunski Sunglasses, Ollo Sapiens Shoes, Artisan Dice
Projects I've backed that I am not: just Shadowrun Online

EDIT: Raging anonymous neg repper, thanks for the troll award. Someday you can step up and be a man (or woman) and admit your feelings publicly and I can see where all your rage comes from. Maybe I'll even take you seriously. Until then? LOL.

I'm not saying you should get a pair of these but you should get a pair.

Super supportive and so incredibly comfortable to wear and walk around in for very lengthy periods of time. I won't wear anything else unless I absolutely have to. I got a brand new pair for $35 too, you can't beat that.

I'll seriously consider looking into that for when I have to teach Civil War battlefield classes. I think I'm doing four this year.

Thankfully you have an 18 year launch date for both! Kickstarter is also about meeting deadlines.

Wear them when you teach your students about Julius Caesar crossing the Delware to lay waste to Mexico and free the slaves.

I feel like I'm teaching that class to about 5% of my students. I love it when a plan comes together.

Important note:

On our summer forum I had one tell me that Italy was in India. My mind exploded.

Ugh, I can imagine. A couple of months ago my mom asked me why Ukraine and Russia were at war, since Ukraine is a Russian city.. *head asplodes!*

I've never kickstarted anything, but I have been very happy with my experience on patreon. Instead of giving money for the promise of widgets, you promise to give money on the production of each widget. I'm not saying either model is better or worse, just bringing it up since we're on the topic of crowdsourcing. My interaction with patreon has been limited to musicians, but artists of all kinds are involved.

Projects I've backed that I am not: Shadowrun Online, Dungeons and Dragons: A Documentary

How can you not be happy with it, it hasn't come out yet....?

Surely you are not unhappy b/c it hasn't met deadlines? Because that's just normal SOP for Kickstarter.

Me, I'm still looking forward to it, as a backer.

Fair enough, you're right. I removed it from that post. Unlike Shadowrun Online they delivered their backer rewards as promised. I was upset about what I thought was a cancelled feature but I have since learned it was just delayed. They're okay in my book.

Reading message boards for totally unrelated things? Way to go, Dungeons and Dragons: A Documentary.

I backed the Kickstarter for a new edition of Mage: The Ascension. It's a great tabletop rpg from the same ruffled poet shirts that brought you Vampire: The Masquerade.

New Mage? Interesting. I backed Masquerade. Send me a PM if those Tradition shirts go up again?

PM sent. They have produced an enormous amount of content for this new Mage book. The draft printout is the size of two phone books and they're creating a ridiculous amount of .pdfs for supplementary material. I think it's safe to say that White Wolf's overall development was historically uneven but Mage was consistently strong. It makes me wonder why the Gemstone team never buckled down with their best writers to do more world building and lore development.

At times I feel like they tried. I don't know that it ever had the senior management vision to hold it together though.

some friends are looking for help to reopen their business after they were robbed and insurance isn't covering it.

I've backed ...many things, and only 2 projects have fallen through: A water bottle which never got made and a charging cable that worked for a day before failing. 2 out of 45 isn't bad at all.
