So, to clarify on this point: Names do not get to be used multiple times in game unless someone renames a character and that name becomes available. So an NPC in this case cannot share the same name as a player character. That being said, in the cart, I see nothing that indicates that an actual NPC is in the wagon selling the yarn. It was just a name that was used for the shop and the announcement.
The only time we may run into this is not a GM-run NPC character, and I can confirm that there are some "automated" NPCs who share names with each other, and with characters.

But stories, names of those NPCs that aren't "live" (aka like the old warrior or the flower girl....physical things that roam about but aren't characters logged in from an account), shop merchants when you ORDER, etc....all of those can and probably do sometimes overlap names

Guys, we did update the name to not be a character name. We asked you to move on, because it was fixed. We did not ask a player to out themselves on Discord, as you could have DM'd or assisted in game to let us know, and I'm sorry that was not clear.

We appreciate feedback, for sure, and we moved to address it. The request to stop was not just about the people who brought it to our attention, but also about the people who were questioning why it was brought up or saying it was fine, etc.....so no one had to feel badly about bringing it up. That was literally the point of requesting you move on.
It is appreciated that we are all so passionate about the game, and while yes, we do see it as a minor thing, we have updated it so it isn't the same as an existing character, and we appreciate that you let us know it was a concern.

Hello Irondwarf, I'm sorry that you are so upset and stressed by this newest revelation. When we check for a name it only checks for the letter of what we are requesting. It can also be hard after years for us to know which names are still around and not simply archived. As has been pointed out this is being addressed by the GMs that it affects and we are going to work toward a resolution that will make everyone happy. Should an issue like this arise again, then you are welcome to write feedback as it may be more discrete so that you aren't feeling awkward about your request and others aren't pointing fingers. At this time I would like everyone to simply take a step back, take a beat, and let us work to find a happy resolution. I will say the GMs probably could have handled this better. I get they thought it was cute to name the shop "Bjarn's Yarn Barn", and it probably never occurred to them that a character named "Bjarn" might still play or object to their character's name being used, but their solution to just add another N to Bjarn (so now "Bjarnn's Yarn Barn") did seem kind of dismissive to the player. Yeah "Bjarn's Yarn Barn" rhymes and is cute, but they probably should have just came up with a whole new name, or at least a whole new spelling of "Bjarn."

And this sentence especially seems dismissive to me: "Hello Irondwarf, I'm sorry that you are so upset and stressed by this newest revelation."

And a tl;dr version, minus the drama, with approximate times included...

- Casil announced at 12:07 am release of pop up store in Vaalor: Trader Bjarn's Yarn Barn, not realizing there was long time player character, warrior fame list belongee, named Bjarn, and Casil went to bed soon after.

- At 5:20 am someone pointed out the fact this was the name of a player character. A few people made light hearted jokes about it, including a GM, which some of Bjarn's friends on Discord got bent out of shape about.

- At 9:50 am, a GM stepped in to say they'd messaged Casil to let him know to address it as soon as he woke up. Casil got back on at 11 am and acknowledged the issue and immediately added a second 'N' "Bjarnn's Barn Yarn" as a temporary fix until he heard directly from Bjarn if that was sufficient.

- Bjarn still not having said anything himself, his friends made known they didn't think the temporary fix went far enough.

- An hour later, Bjarn still hadn't gotten in touch with Casil to personally voice his concerns, at which point Casil, publicly, implored him to "reach out", as Casil had still only heard from people who weren't Bjarn. Casil was present for the next 2 hours, making comments regarding other things.

- At 2:48 pm Bjarn finally posted publicly, making his feelings known officially, and thanking people sarcastically for forcing him to doxx himself as "the yarn karen".

- Casil confirmed his DM's were open the whole time and noted that there was no need for anyone to doxx themselves.

- Still much bickering back and forth between the Jets and the Sharks, at which point Thandiwe put her foot down and ended it.

The logs still don't give the full context because GMs went back and deleted various comments to sanitize the discussion and make themselves look better. And they still came off as dismissive and flippant.

It would've been such an easy and reasonable fix to change the name to LITERALLY anything else that ended with -arn, say "Sorry we should use NAMECHECK from now on, you're right" and make everyone happy. Instead they went with the most "fuck you" option possible and said SHOW YOURSELF COWARD BJARN IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE then OH LOL I GUESS I'LL JUST ADD AN EXTRA N TO THE NAME.

Oh and they also lied about having reached out to Bjarn, like what the actual fuck? Why be this lazy and bad when the fix is so easy and not even ego-bruising?

Throughout all this, HouseofSimp and the others in the knitting circle/vaalor cybersex club were mocking everyone saying that the concern was legitimate and the GMs were either joining in the mockery or not saying shit.

In the end I think this may have been a tipping point for Discord. It definitely wasn't the only factor(see Naijin being run off by whiny bitches) but not long after the incident we got this announcement from Wyrom in the General channel:


We will be changing how we interact with Discord RSN. We've talked about it in various channels at this point, but we will be consolidating the channels quite a bit and making more use of the forums. Channels are mostly going to be used by players as a way to communicate among yourselves with limited staff response. Staff may still talk on channels, but we are trying to move all pertinent information to the forums feature on Discord and make sure things are properly announced. We don't want everything just buried in a channel somewhere.

With that said, staff on unofficial Discord servers will be a bit more limited on their responses as well. In an effort to make sure the information shared is available to all our players, announcements will be here on the official Discord. Other servers can follow the announcement channels to get that information over there. GameMasters can still remain on other unofficial servers as guests, but they will need to place all pertinent information on the official Discord server.

Which, first off, whewwww why are GM's even IN private discords with their same(official Simutronics) accounts AT ALL??

But I think this is a good and needed change for the mental health and stress levels of the GM's. They never should have been so accessible in Discord, at least not the ones that make actual coding and content for the game. Customer relations is a wholeass skillset on its own and Discord should have only have contained official responses from from dedicated employees that were chosen for that skillset.

So, to clarify on this point: Names do not get to be used multiple times in game unless someone renames a character and that name becomes available. So an NPC in this case cannot share the same name as a player character. That being said, in the cart, I see nothing that indicates that an actual NPC is in the wagon selling the yarn. It was just a name that was used for the shop and the announcement.
The only time we may run into this is not a GM-run NPC character, and I can confirm that there are some "automated" NPCs who share names with each other, and with characters.

But stories, names of those NPCs that aren't "live" (aka like the old warrior or the flower girl....physical things that roam about but aren't characters logged in from an account), shop merchants when you ORDER, etc....all of those can and probably do sometimes overlap names

I will say the GMs probably could have handled this better. I get they thought it was cute to name the shop "Bjarn's Yarn Barn", and it probably never occurred to them that a character named "Bjarn" might still play or object to their character's name being used, but their solution to just add another N to Bjarn (so now "Bjarnn's Yarn Barn") did seem kind of dismissive to the player. Yeah "Bjarn's Yarn Barn" rhymes and is cute, but they probably should have just came up with a whole new name, or at least a whole new spelling of "Bjarn."

And this sentence especially seems dismissive to me: "Hello Irondwarf, I'm sorry that you are so upset and stressed by this newest revelation."

Maybe Thandiwe didn't mean it that way, but it does kind of read sarcastic and belittling.

And to think, all that could have been avoided by typing two words.
