To go with the guitar thread, often unappreciated, who are your favorite bassists?

Also read this to see what I'm talking about...
http://www.kithfan.org/work/transcripts/one/bass.html

1. Flea (no contest)
2. Victor Wooten (of Bela Fleck)
3. Mark White (Spin Doctors)

Best quote ever, "Bruce (bassist): Hey, what are you guys doin' after the show? Oh, nothin'? Okay."

Kevin: If he does go to the party, he can only get the good looking girl's... best friend.

Victor Wooten and Chris Squire as the top 2, in no particular order. I'm not a bass fan so I can't honestly contribute any other names.

Chris because he's a genius, and can do things with his bass, with such showmanship...what a character!

Victor because of his mad talent, but also because he's a sweetheart of a guy (his sister-in-law is a good friend of mine, who is married to Joseph Wooten, keyboard player for the Steve Miller Band). Watching the Wooten Brothers perform at a local Nashville bar is a total hoot.

Jaco Pastorius

Seeing Wooten play Sinister Minister is a lot fun.

C/Valth - bored beyond belief at work today....

Chris Squire ... definately .. if nothing more but for the fact that he revolutionized the instrument in the early 70's bringing it out waaay in front in the rock ouvre.

Jaco .. dead .. insane .. but a great bassist

Tony Levin ... Crimson, Peter Gabriel

John Pattitucci .. because well .. just because

Forgot Stanley Clarke from Return to Forever ...

And I'll add Scott Thunes - who also toured in Zappa's '88 band.

I agree with those two. I've liked the Chili Peppers for a while and got into Bela Fleck years ago. The bass on Sinister Minister alone puts him in the top 3.

Though in concert it's easy to be distracted away from the bass when you're staring at the drummitar.

I saw Victor and Co.[Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, laymen.] in South Bend, IN. and I dont really see a need to mention anyone else. Jaco is an innovator but, when you see a man detune, still keep playing one handed, retune, who else is there? He had the crowd in the palm of his hand, for 20 minutes alone. Just a man and his bass and everyone was utterly spellbound. I am a bassist myself of 8 years and Flea is my biggest influence but, no one can mess with Wooten, not even Les. One I dont see on here but needs honorable mention is Ryan Martinie of Mudvayne. That man has some unbelievable dexterity on 5 and 6 strings, whether youre a nu metal fan or not, hes a badass.
