So I'm trying to find low or no salt versions of things my dad likes to eat and I found a hot sauce online that claims to have 0 sodium, so I ordered a bottle.

When I got the bottle today I checked the nutrition info and it says 0 sodium but under ingredients it lists salt.

Now I realize salt and sodium aren't exactly the same thing but from what I understand salt contains sodium, so how can salt be an ingredient yet the hot sauce contains no sodium?

Is it possible there is so little sodium in the bottle that they don't have to list it on the nutrition info? Are they lying? Are they stupid? Am I missing something obvious here?

It is primarily made of NaCl. Perhaps it is something like NuSalt that they are just calling salt. It the 0 a percent number or what? Because those percents are based on a 2,000 calorie diet usually. If it is the percent number, it could just be a very negligible amount.

And just an FYI, you do need sodium to survive, less you get Hyponatremia. It is a pretty nasty thing that makes you basically sweat out all your liquids too fast.

It says 0 mg, doesn't have a % sign on it.

My dad is stubborn, he's been on a sodium restriction diet for years now but he won't listen and try to limit his intake. He eats a lot of salt, I'm just trying to find ways to cut some of it back.

Problem is salt substitutes use potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride and his doctor said potassium chloride is just as bad or worse than sodium :/

I thought I was doing a good thing when I got him salt substitute until his doctor mentioned that. I have managed to convince my dad not to add salt or salt substitute to his food, so there's that at least.

Personally, I prefer Sea Salt. Preferably from a grinder. So good on hot buttered popcorn.

I restrict salt and non dairy protein pretty heavily. Life works out to be smoothies in the morning, something vegetableish in the afternoon, and I use my six ounces of non dairy protein up at dinner. I get salt in through the stuff that I have with my vegetables and often with my grain that I have at dinner. Rather than weird salt substitutes I use a little bit of parmesan instead. It works pretty well.

I'll take chili pepper powder over salt.

Nope. I still eat meat. I just have to increase fluids, decrease salt, reduce oxalates, reduce purines, and make it balanced. It's not thrilling but I had practice avoiding food that I was allergic to for a long time so it isn't too big a deal.

Yup. Paprika too. Little bit of salt is ok. Just a little.

(Helps herself to a third slice of Hawaiian pizza) All this food restriction. I truly pity you... and I also use sea salt over the other stuff.

This is something about iodine in salt the guys need...from what I read.

Yeah, having not too much and not too little iodine is good for everybody.

Iodine is a natural boost to the thyroid to produce hormones. Additionally, excess Iodine protects the thyroid against radiation (yay).

Re: Salt. There's an uncommonly large witchhunt against salt. From what I've researched, Salt will not CREATE hypertension (high blood pressure). However, if you've already been diagnosed with high blood pressure, it will exacerbate the situation. It's not the cause, but it'll aggravate the symptoms of the condition.

It's definitely not the source of my kidney issues. It aggravates the situation though, so I've reduced it. I don't think its directly responsible for all that much.

So in the case of a nuclear attack you should suck on salt tablets?

Do you get a lot of kidney stones? My oldest daughter has been through 4 surgeries for big stones over the past year. It's fucking nuts.

And the fucking bills... if I get one more "ologist" fucking bill in the mail.......

Yes. Iodine tablets were in high demand for Japanese workers on the nuclear power plant. The problem is that iodine only protects your Thyroid.

Doesn't do much for every other organ susceptible to radiation poisoning.

But, at least 1 organ is protected? yay?

Yes. The bills are pretty ridiculous. It started with a really nasty infection that I picked up while foolishly eating in Belize and has continued to three other stones. Hopefully my system will eventually all be straightened out. I thought I was making the intelligent choice by not visiting India with my family but none of them got sick.

It's less about the thyroid's survival, more about preventing cancer from developing within it, and subsequently causing more damage than a pill a day will solve.

Go to a grocery store and buy the biggest salt shaker you can find.
Fill it.
At dinner time, present the glorious salt shaker as your gift to him.
Tell him that you also took out an $$$,$$$ life insurance policy on him and slide the salt shaker over to him.
