View Full Version : Sell me or unsell me on returning to GS

So I have been considering returning to GS for awhile, after several years away. Since it my MO to overthink and research every decision, I've even figured out the character I would play and how I want to build him. But I'm still on the fence, and I'm hoping to hear something that might help me make the decision.
Basically I won't be able to play much. A few hours a week in the summer, probably at best an hour or two a week in the rest of the year. Mostly late at night (after 10 pm, PST) or a tiny chunk here and there in the daytime. My question, I guess, is this: how much cool stuff is going on that's accessible to a low-level, part time player? Will there be opportunities to get involved in storylines and quests, or do those mostly happen during prime hours? I get the impression that most of the players have been around a long time and the population seems skewed towards capped or near-capped characters, but maybe that's just based on who posts to these boards. Are there enough opportunities for lower-level characters to RP, find hunting buddies, etc?
I've seen the "GS is dying" threads, and not really interested in hearing that. I'd more like to hear what's going on that's cool, and how accessible, or not, those things are to someone who won't be playing that much. And yes, I know the ultimate test is just to reactivate my account, play a bit, and see how it is, but I'm still interested in hearing peoples' thoughts.
Thanks in advance!

Rather than reactivating an account, do a free trial. If the shine hasn't worn off after 30 days, you'll have your own answer.
"opportunities" is tricky. You have to make your own, but it's doable. Not playing much is going to make it much harder. If someone else is playing as much as you, it's very hard to be on at the same time. If someone else is playing more than you, you won't be able to stay near level to them, so that's hunting out the window.
Good luck! :)

What does level have to do with RP?

There are also free month codes floating around for returning customers. That GS facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/gs4life/) has them, or maybe someone here can PM you one.

Thanks for the thoughts. A couple follow-up questions:
re: starting a free trial. If I do that and it goes well, is it possible then to reopen my old account and transfer the new character over to it?
re: level and RP. Obviously you don't stop being in character when you interact with someone of different levels. But in the past I feel like I encountered folks who didn't take you seriously if you were younger, and maybe the power gap makes it harder for characters to interact on a level beyond conversation. Or maybe not.
Lastly, no one has said anything about storyline events, whether they ever happen at odd hours, and whether there are any obstacles for lower-level characters to get involved.
Thanks again!

Oh! #1 perk to returning to GS: you can ask Tisket to do a portrait of your character! She's F2P (free to portrait) too!

I haven't played in about a year, but I don't find the GS changes that quickly... Yes, some folks won't take you as seriously if you are 50 levels below them. This used to be sorta understandable when levels and character age were tied together... Now with you being able to set it to whatever you want it makes a little less sense. I suppose someone of higher level could be considered more established? Even then, you'll find the better RPers don't even take level into account.
As far as storylines, at a lower level you can participate. There are some that have no combat in them at all, so yeah, anyone can do it. There are also some that are very combat-centric. Invasions have pretty much always come in waves though, so you'll beable to fight in the first few, but slowly the critters will become too powerful. Also, if you aren't around the cap, you probably won't be the one to kill the big bad evil guy trying to destroy <insert town>. There are a LOT of people at or near cap.

Returning to GS lesson #1: your level is not a reflection of your age.

Most of the low level characters you meet will be alts anyway. Don't let inconsequential things like level stop you from interacting. If you do let it stop you then you shouldn't reactivate to begin with.

The current storyline actually has a lot of stuff going on after 9-10 pm PST (GM Kenstrom is on the West Coast), so it'd be possible to get engaged in that.
I'm a part time player myself for most of the time (right now, I have a bit more time), so I do find it sometimes hard to get engaged. But I've usually found a few people to RP with and be around. Hunting is generally a solitary pursuit though.

Its $15 dude. If you really need the advice of complete strangers to help you decide on something that is the same price of a large pizza, maybe you shouldn't play online video games, otherwise... Go for it, and get some extra toppings on it you crazy son of a bitch.

Don't worry about being low level. Just script your way to high-level. Run a hunting script while watching TV or doing whatever you like. Just keep an eye on it so you can respond to a GM if someone (not likely) reports you. Or hit up Shattered if you want to AFK script out the ass.
Once you have scripted your way to high level, you can start scripting other shit. Rank up in the Warrior's Guild by scripting, for example. In between scripting breaks, you can try to engage in roleplay. On that score, try to avoid the other scripters (they're everywhere--Gemstone is all about paying to not play these days).
I wish you the best of luck returning to insanely expensive ScriptStone. Returning will provide you with the opportunity to play with a bunch of money-bags who enjoy paying to not play. There is, no doubt, a minority population which you might be able to engage in roleplay with. But it's going to be hard to integrate yourself with that population. And you'll spend most of your time working on ignoring the script-kiddies who hoot and holler OOC shit like chimpanzees.

Tisket portraits
Can you do a portrait of my Shattered character?
His name is Goatse.
He is wearing a gold wedding band, and a massively distended anus.
The anus holds a very large amount (or whatever it is now after the INSPECT change).
