View Full Version : I've got an issue

I work at a restaurant, back of house, and there has been an increasing smell of raw sewage in the kitchen and freezer. Now I've told my manager and he's doing nothing but making me pour bleach down the drains. My dilemma is whether or not I should report the place for unsanitary conditions (this has been going on for two weeks straight) or just sit there and hope the issue gets solved.
The obvious issue is that I miss work or get flat out fired for reporting the place but two weeks of pouring bleach down the drains isn't doing anything.
Opinions? Options?

Report it, he might be a serial killer.

Burn the place down for the insurance money.

I suggest a hidden camera to discover who has been crapping in the kitchen/freezer drains.

Report it. If someone gets sick because of it, there will be bigger issues.

That explains the amount of lotion he keeps making me put on.
Burn the place down for the insurance money.
But I won't get any of it so that doesn't help me...

I'm pretty sure I could guess who it is. Okay it's me.

If the problem is the same one we had at an office building I worked at once, there may be a leak in the drain trap. It's the U-shaped bend in the drainpipes that is meant to hold water and block the eau de sewer from coming up. Maybe you can appeal to your boss' apparently skinflinty nature by pointing out the water damage that may be occurring somewhere.
I am not sure if this is a health code violation or not, though. Just call the local health department and ask.

Sounds like there is something wrong with the grease trap.

Steak House.

This could be that but that usually ends up in a backup of water in the drain. Call a plumber immediately. You don't want to deal with the Health Inspectors shutting you down.

Speaking of which, don't health inspectors make regular visits to restaurants? Isn't this the type of thing you want to get taken care of because a visit? Or is your boss just going to have you febreeze the hell out of the place before their arrival?

We haven't had a health inspector for a while so we're bound to have one come in soon. Basically I've been pouring soapy water and bleach down every drain. Which at the beginning was fine but now the entire back of the house smells like sewage and the bleach isn't doing anything. We can't seat people by the kitchen any more because it reeks. Even the bar area, which has a drain and is smack dab in the center of the front area, is beginning to have issues.

While people give Back a lot of crap about a lot of things this is an area I'd listen to him on. It most definitely falls in his area of expertise.

You saying Back is an expert on shit? That's kind of mean :/
Health inspectors are usually every 6 months. Bleaching drains is at least a weekly practice. If front of the house can smell it I'd have called a plumber yesterday.

The obvious issue is that word gets out and the restaurant customers stop patronizing your establishment. If your boss hasn't figured that out then he's a moron.
Also, why call it "raw" sewage. I always wondered that. If it's treated sewage would it still smell like sewage? Inquiring minds.

Well, I called the health department and they gave me a run around but it sounds like someone is gonna be popping in soon. I really hate to do that but it's better than breathing in harmful sewage gas.

Good call. Surprised nothing was done sooner. An employee at a restaurant in my area posted photos of conditions in the back of the house on Instagram... roaches in the butter, black sludge under the floor mats. Needless to say that place took a big hit in business. No idea who it was or what happened to them but the general feeling is everyone was glad they did it. Except maybe their management.

Ugh.
Luckily the kitchen isn't horrendous but I definitely see a few patches of grime. Unfortunately, management here is incredibly cheap. We were using nothing but water to clean the floors for three months. Lots of broken or damaged equipment floats around the place.
Something else. You did the right thing. I've mentioned not wanting to be shut down by the health department. But it is more than that. You do not want to fuck with the public's health. In fact you have an obligation to protect the public's health. That is the real reason to make certain everyone knows how to handle food properly, how to store food properly, how to clean properly, and how to operate with food allergies.
Consider yourself a level above the average restaurant employee.
