It is the best game I have played in my life!"
Xanith - Human Warrior
That name is very very familiar.
Whether a powerful yet mischievous Halfling wizard, a massive Giantman warrior, a brooding Dark Elven Sorceror or one of the many other possibilities, you begin your adventure in a fantasy medieval world known as Elanthia.
And the cookie cutters were born!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
This was in the Feedback section, with the title "A letter to Parents" explaining how safe this game is for their child to play.
"At Simutronics, we care about promoting a family atmosphere that can allow players of all ages to participate in and enjoy our games. Day and night our GameMasters monitor for vulgarity, sexually explicit language, unlawful conduct and harassment. Repeat offenders may find themselves locked out of the games for a period of time up to three months, or indefinitely. A safe, healthy environment is very important to our staff, who specifically designs the games in order to promote teamwork and creativity."

It's from archive.org, which saves pages periodically. That one's atleast 6 years old.

Xanith is still an active player. You might remember him as the Faery Warlord.

Just shows we've wasted at least 6 years of our life here.

Wow I feel so left out. I don't get to remember any of that since I have only been playing the past couple years. You guys feel old, but it would have been great to have been around back then!

The knight graphic was pretty good. They should use it again.
And making me visit that old gemstone page almost makes me want to quit and get a real job.
Almost.

Damn, I wish I had a snapshot of what my character used to wear. I wonder if I can remember the items....
EVERYTHING SPIDERSILK.
So sad...but back then I was excited just hunting kobolds. I don't think I ever got a char over level 12 and thought I was RICH at 500k in the bank.

Back in those days, I'd come back from school and play a character. Then I'd get home and decide said character would never be good and reroll then go to school. I still remember thinking "Wow, this is my oldest character I'm awesome." when I got one to level 5.

You are holding a platinum-shod orase runestaff in your right hand.
You are wearing a star-cut emerald amulet, a translucent spidersilk satchel, a black mesh drawstring pouch, a translucent spidersilk cloak, a ratty sack, a translucent spidersilk backpack, a lustrous white diamond wristlet, some soft cyan silk boots, some blue casting leathers, a deep black deathstone stud in his right eyebrow, a jade falcon amulet and a gold ring.

Heh, perhaps you didn't understand me.
It looks a little something like this...She is wearing a black spidersilk cloak, a back-laced spidersilk bodice, a spidersilk satchel, an ankle-length spidersilk skirt, a pair of spidersilk slippers. And a whole mess of fluff that probably outdid even Vif back in the day.
<shudder>
The AOL picture was better.

I *love* that old picture, brings back so many fond memories. Am I the only one who finds it amusing that warriors are always portrayed in GS art as having no armour?
https://www.play.net/images/gs4/info/Professions/warrior.gif
I have a giant wizard who only wears a kilt and considers himself a warrior (he's a war-wizard who uses polearms), I enjoy sticking with the ethos of the warrior as purported by gemstone pictures:
You see Bressler
He appears to be a Giant.
He appears to be hoary with age and shorter than average. He has heavy-lidded brown eyes and olive skin. He has receding, brown hair. He has a wrinkled face.
He is holding a naginata in his right hand.
He is wearing a tartan wool kilt.
That's all he ever wears, I think he's really bad-ass and I absolutely love playing him; I always have a positive reaction from people because they can't believe that some guy is walking around with just a kilt and a weapon in hand, no armour, no backpack, no amulet, nothing. I was originally going to make him an actual warrior but I figured even with redux I was unlikely to be able to survive without armour so I went with a wizard figuring I'd have a better chance of avoiding attacks altogether (although manuever attacks are brutal).
Here's another of the old pics, mostly like the one above:

I used to try and figure out what person was what profession in that old picture. As near as I can figure:
Women on the left: Ranger- She wears green and uses a bow (archery was no where near out when this picture was around either)
Man in armour: Cleric (note the war hammer/mace, clerics used blunts). Clerics were more paladin-esque at this time, a lot of them used blunts as well. You'll note the cleric wears heavier armour than any class.
Man: Warrior, carries a claidhmore. You'll note that appropriate warrior gear is a loincloth, leg greaves and arm greaves.
Halfling: No idea what profession, likes to sit directly near a warriors crotch, so maybe an empath.
Dwarf: Warrior, at least he wears armour.
Old man: Wizard, uses a staff (there were very few staff using wizards at this time) and a dagger, two weapon combat forerunner
Woman: I think she's a sorceror, not enough fluff to be an empath
Man on right: I *think* this guy is a bard...

 You need to figure out a way for me to work this into the Ultimate Empath Guide.

I would hope so, unless men like walking around carrying harps.
I think the halfling is a thief
Speaking of flash b acks, I remember I used to fiend over GS. I'd put like 50 bucks on the AOL account a month so that would equal to about 2 maybe 3 days of playing. So I'd kill all my shit and be fiending for the shit for 28 days waiting to play again. I still remember sitting in Gym class in the 8th grade waiting for it to be over so I could go play GS. And I loved Gym. heh

For a great collection of old logs, maps, captures and memories of the "good old days" of Gemstone, visit Manny's site at http://www.geocities.com/gshistory/contents/contents.htm
I dunno about anybody else, but I find it pretty fascinating.
PS: If anyone has logs or captures of the Hanging (Abandoned) Inn before renovation, I would love to see them. In particular, I'm looking for the upstairs room with the map drawn in crayon on the wall.
