This is a good deal for Vibram. Their sales increased by $11 million a year and they settled for $3.75 million. The attorneys who filed the suit are getting $937,500.00. The only people who get screwed are the idiots who hurt themselves running in these shoes.

They're providing a refund of up to two pairs of shoes with no proof of purchase though you may have to be certified in the class. After that any left over money goes to the American Heart Association to study the health benefits of running.

This is a big win-win for Vibram.

Valerie Bezdek brought the class action suit against Vibram in March 2012. She filed her complaint in Massachusetts, the state where Vibram’s U.S. headquarters are located. ... “The gist of her claim is that Vibram illegally obtained an economic windfall from her because it was only by making false health claims that Vibram induced consumers to buy FiveFingers shoes, and to pay more for them than they would have otherwise,”

I have no sympathy for Valeri Bezdek or anyone else who screwed up following this trend.

I wear them in the cage when training and they're perfect for light trail running and bouldering. I guess people should research what they buy.

Perhaps the second most hated shoe in America.

The thing about barefoot running that people don't understand is it takes time and training to adjust. If you head out and run a marathon barefoot right away you're damn well gonna hurt yourself. Doesn't surprise me in the least that people are getting injured.

I vote for Bruno Magli's. The shoe that factored so heavily in the demise of one cultural icon, OJ Simpson, and led to the rise of the beast, Kim Kardashian.

That's the deal right there. Ninja's not out stomping miles into cement with his 5 fingers so he's not having problems. It is shocking how folks jump wholeheartedly into these fads with absolutely no idea what they're doing.

Agreed. When I see someone in crocs I automatically start using smaller words and speaking slower because I assume they've got a learning disability.

That book Born to Run got me into barefoot running. You have to pretty much completely change your gate to eliminate heel strike. The people he talks about who run long distances barefoot or in sandals aren't doing it on cement, either- they're all on trails. Running on roads sucks generally anyway, I much prefer trails. Even walking long distances on completely even asphalt roads I found I would have knee issues because of the repetitiveness of your gait. Trails are more uneven, which relieves that repetitive stress.

Sounds about right.

I remember watching that stock price soar during that fad and thinking Really? Those things?

I have a pair with some really thick soles that I use as river shoes and they are really good at that task.

That's actually what they're made for right?

I don't believe they were explicitly river/creek shoes. I'd imagine they were more for rugged trail running wtih lots of rocks, stumps, branches and stuff like that.

Actually, I just looked them up and I have the TrekSport version, it seems. They are advertised on the website as outdoor types, for hiking and trekking and such.

No they were designed for working/playing in water. They were a surf shoe originally.

I will defer to your product history knowledge. Regardless, if you are looking for shoes that won't come off your feet if you step out of your boat/kayak/whatever into mud, and will protect you against a lot of jagged and unpleasant foot ticklings, they are great and pretty rugged as well.

I hear you. They look like a good shoe for the right situation. I only responded to your post because since the book Born to Run came out, you're the only person I know who uses them for what they were intended.
