Polearm or Shield/ OHE? Need to know which is truly the best way to train when it comes to AS and DS. The only problem I have as a polearm user is archers. My bolt defense isnt as good as my regular defense. Would I have that same problem as a Shield/ OHE user?
P.S.- Bard polearm users have more tp's to spend on other skills so thats a plus too.

Bolt defense will never be as good in an empty hand fighting style (two handed polearms, two handers, etc) as with a shield. That's just it.
But polearms pwn people, and with bards having air lore and RT reducers and SONIC LANCES (drool), I think polearms are the way to go.

I know polearms hit hard and what not but its not always about offense. Gotta look at the defense too and I wanna know which one is better overall.

Best defense is a good offense.
Plus, you can always choose to hunt creatures that don't bolt. Most polearmers/claid wielders choose that route usually anyways.
I may be biased because my bard is a polearmer, but I'm gonna say polearms pwn.

Polearms are good but its just those damn archers! Sometimes if im dueling an archer I feel I need to wear sonic full plate so I dont get screwed on the first shot and then retaliate. I'm still stuck tho. Might just stay with the polearms till later.

I love my sonic polearm.
With 5 ranks of air lore its double flaring and with more lore it will be great.
My regular lightning polearm was really nice too.
Cman Charge is a good cman to know as is spin
I never use trip as I end up missing or hurting myself.
But I hunt shan solo at train 37 and do not die all that much only when a ranger spikes me.
you can stance dance as well...
Anyway I love polearms!

Sing song of noise and nothing will ever be able to cast a bolt at you.

I say polearm is better too... and I also love CMAN CHARGE! Having extra TPs is just another bonus for going the polearm route.

Song of noise won't stop an arrow... which is his primary concern.

I think Mistomeer was referring to the guy who said he pwns trali when he hunts them as a 37 bard, except when the trali shaman spike thorn him.

Simply said, if you are having a problem with archers that much, then you suck.
It means your rolled your bard wrong, and most likely trained him wrong as well. After the 400's, and sometimes blurs, + 1000's, Chadj's bolt DS is about the same as his regular DS. Roll your character right, and problem solved.

spike thorn I have very little problem with. It's the fucking binds that I have a problem with. I have since decided that I need blues and such to hunt there.

Polearms the way to go it seems the best possibility with a bard, and more so than any other profession and i very much agree a good offense is the best defense. If your throwin around a nice double flaring sonic lance your usually either gonna crit, knock em down, or stun anyway, all you'd need to worry about would be swarms, and there are spells and signs and such for those matters.

My bard used to be an OHE + Shield + Voln Fu. This was through GSIII and the beginning of GSIV. During instant migration, I tried out almost every weapon and skill combo possible. I found Polearm > All.

Chadj, your bolt DS is as good as your regular DS because you use outside spells to help that. I KNOW you dont know any spells beyond 401 in the minors so with that said i'm trying to get a good bolt DS with my OWN spells. I hate when I have to rely on a wizard or cleric to get that up (unless its my other character of course).

I know 1030 and 407. I use 414 as an outside spell (from mass guards) and mass blurs. Nothing more, yet oft times less.

why didnt you go to 1035? You could swing that lance of yours 1 second faster and you'll have a higher defense.

Because the mana cost is too much for someone under 50 trains. Or even 60. And since I don't really need a lower RT (5 with a lance for now is fine), it isn't needed/wanted as much as 425 is.

Acually it was shan... and I am a pure song bard.. no 400's...
At this age I don't have alot of extra mana to sing everysong there is...
I find the times a ranger gets off a spell as opposed to the times when I crit him first is small..
so maybe 1 death a week.. maybe....
I can handle that... its the risk you take hunting...
Lullabye and vibrachant are a more valuable use of my mana.
Anyway back on track... polearm bards are the best!
