Announcing a new instanced quest: Troubled Waters: Rescue at Sea on 04/26/2014 09:11 AM PDT

Sailing the Northern Waves of the Great Western Sea, krolvin warships raid the Elanthian coastline in the name of the Slavers Guild. The price for able men, women, and children keeps the Krol in business, as the slavery trade from Glaoveln to the Southern Waves of the Great Western Sea runs rampant.

Brave volunteers are called upon to board a chartered schooner and join a rescue mission to save those taken captive. The schooners sail out to known slave-trading routes to intercept krolvin ships, which volunteers board to meet the enemy head on. Because of the high volume of krolvin traffic on the trade routes, schooner captains dare not stay longer than two hours, lest krolvin reinforces arrive and add the volunteers to their slave inventory.

Up to 10 players can participate in the next GemStone IV Adventure, a small-scale quest that takes roughly two hours to complete. This is a combat-heavy quest, but is designed to accommodate a wide mix of professions and levels.

Prices, dates and times, and prize information to come!

Apparently it uses the GoS warcamp spawning system where you are safe from things out of your range if you don't attack them. Looks like they even put some thought into how aoe spells would work with that, too. Nice.

I actually turned off viewing avatars so I can surreptitiously read the forums at work, so I forget what it is half the time. It does make me giggle whenever I think about it though, lol. Thanks for reminding me!

Hah. My work blocks this forum :(

Bear in mind I don't participate in quests as a rule - with the exception of EG mini quests for carousel, knuckle bones and the like. But I found this one to be awesome. Very impressed with how people worked together. No egos but a coordinated approach, with a clear focus on the objective of freeing prisioners and a knock on benefit of some good loot.

Thoroughly enjoyable.

This is the dropped loot. When you consider it was 2 hours worth and we pawned a lot. It's impressive. We didn't get to the treasure cache, but it's been stated sea-themed trinkets.

They do this in DR.. to be honest, the prizes there have ranged from .. wtf.. to OMG THIS IS FUCKING AWESOME.

Of course for the later.. it was like.. 10k script. And there was only one.

They also used it as a currency in an auction at their EG.

Also.. remember... you don't know what the treasure pile is yet. Think of the scrip as an added bonus.

Very true.. and the best prizes in DR cost thousands of scrip.

My favorite item to buy was the 5 alteration card.. cost 5k tickets. Course, in DR.. alterations are few and far between.

As for weapons from there.. for example.. the longsword I would equate to say a 5 maybe 6x with HCW. Cost was 1250 scrip. (they don't use the same weapon stuff, but it's stats compared to regular stuff off the shelf is why I say that)

Given how easy this quest was (Minus figuring out those two hatches because we focused on getting the slaves out), I'm not surprised by the prizes. Some of them look interesting and fun to play with. If the quest ends up being $13 or less I can see signing up for multiple runs. But even with the 10-people groups I'd rather do this with a pre-chosen group of people than open signups.

Also, did it today and had a pretty fun go of it. We totally failed to rescue anyone due to lack of coordination (and drinking), but that's a minor detail. I'll call it a learning experience, hehe.

The run I was on last night was rather underwhelming. Almost as much fun as a warcamp. I don't think we rescued any prisoners, and ended up just taking whatever loot was on our persons or grabbed out of the communal backpack. I didn't get a single enhancive or anything of note, just some invar plate, imflass chain mail and the like.... it is always nice to do something different, but I cannot understand why it is $15....

on my 2nd run Saturday we finished rescuing the prisoners at the end of the first hour. I posted on the officials, and it was seconded, that focusing so much on the treasure is a bad idea. Enjoying the experience is likely going to get you more satisfaction than trying to get a mil or two in treasure to "get your money's worth." Even the treasure room was not spectacular. Best item I pulled was an MR blind wand. Something very cool will probably drop from the krol, but in two runs plain 5x plate was the best I saw.

I figured it was entitling the winner to get a custom spell preparation alteration. Kinda like the services offered in RtCF and other events/etc. This was just the alterer's scroll equivalent of it.

Bought the hairstick and it has unique hairstyles!

It also appears to be loosely based on a Veola-type hairmathinger without the sides... maybe a new kind of feature-changing hairworn item!

You analyze your narwhal horn hairstick and sense that the item is largely free from merchant alteration restrictions, but the creator has stated that "The item has restrictions on changing the noun."

The creator has also provided the following information:

The narwhal horn hairstick is currently UNLOCKED.
In this state, you feel like you can WEAR, REMOVE, PUSH, and ATTEND the hairstick.
The hairstick currently allows up to three styles when worn.

Currently available styles:
She has long, fine mournbloom black hair done up in an elaborate narwhal horn-secured coif with an interwoven chain dangling silver coins.
She has long, fine mournbloom black hair wound in an intricate series of interwoven loops about a vaalin-tipped narwhal horn hairstick strung with a chain dangling several silver coins.

a salt-stained tanned leather longcloak with golden knots on the left shoulder - rub to get the smell of the sea

warped imflass hatchet - +12 cold flaring
some steel rapier with a big gem on it that was 0x

ugly goblet with blood red rubies, a rectangular gold filigree mirror, a lump of golden amber suspended on a silver chain, a silver-haloed large yellow diamond

does anyone know the stats on the gold tooth?

Aanton
05-23-2014, 09:38 PM
I actually grabbed the tooth and the case after a successful run today. The tooth is +2 Armor Use, +2 Physical Fitness, +3 Shield use. No idea if that is ranks or skill as I'm over 40 ranks in all of them and haven't had it sung to. I'm guessing skill, though.

The brass plate case is +6 logic and +4 Trading Skill.

What Roblar said. Although I can't figure out the point of entering the Captain's Quarters. But I got 150, so I have to assume that would be the difference.

RSR
05-26-2014, 11:24 PM
Unless there something to figure out once inside the captain's quarters, that it is not it. Been in the Captain's Quarters multiple times and I haven't hit 150 scrip in plat yet. Killed a ton of krol, razed the ship, rescued all the prisoners, never asked for healing or a raise and still not hitting the cap. No clue what I possibly could have done beyond what our groups accomplished.

Roblar
05-27-2014, 12:17 AM
Maybe opening all the chests (2 boxes each ones) and/or spreading out the rescues to make sure each group member rescue 3 prisoners each?

Pretty sure the number of chests found wasn't equal, but did rescue 3 prisoners myself.

Jarvan
05-27-2014, 02:06 AM
I really hope that they didn't tie the massive chests into scrip earning.

Most I have ever got is 114 myself. Course I didn't go into the Cap's room, as to how many I killed, no idea. never counted. but it's pretty much.

Geijon Khyree
05-27-2014, 04:35 AM
Xanith, Attoll, and I never got into the Captain's Quarters, but we all got 150. I assume it's our decimation of the Krolvin and that we got all the prisoners and the treasure room. We mostly shredded a lot of Krolvin is I think what capped us.

We did open every chest so that's an interesting wrinkle.

How far out are these scheduled for?

If I grind like a madman, I should be good to go this weekend. I just really want to go with a completed bow.

shad0ws0ngs

The first two times I did the quest I got 150. We rescued all the prisoners required by the QUEST verb, we opened all the chests, we went into the captain's quarters and asked "wtf, why are we even in here?" and putzed around trying to figure it out. We went into the treasure room and got all the loot. We killed a huge pile of krolvin. Same thing for the third run, but 141. The first two runs someone ended attached to the mast and had to get off, the first due to death, the second due to being taken away. The third run no one died, no one got taken away. This and the fact that we killed all the krolvin in like .5 seconds per swarm, were the only difference.

and each run we each got 3 prisoners

How far out are these scheduled for?

If I grind like a madman, I should be good to go this weekend. I just really want to go with a completed bow.

The prizes change starting in June. The introductory month's siegery mini of you will not be available then. Other than that, I don't know what changes will be made.

Oh, also, the third run. I had the krolvin language spiral on. Didn't use it for anything. I was hoping the parchment's might be different or a krolvin might talk or something. My first run a krolvin talked, but no idea what he said, which was why I was jonesing for the spiral. Kind of feel like I wasted 300 blackscrip now because, yay, I can understand 5 guys who play half-krol when they finally do speak in krolgah/krolgeh/whatever. Throw that thing in with the gnomish language spectacles I've got.

a gnarled black ko'nag runestaff
750 blackscrip

>anal my rune
You analyze your black ko'nag runestaff and sense that the item is largely free from merchant alteration restrictions.

The creator has also provided the following information:

Lesser Armor and Weapon Moods:

This item contains mood messaging depending on flare type, and has a chance to fire off ambient messaging every so often. It will also work for things like bless, elemental edge, and guiding light flares. This item is currently active and will do ambient messaging. You may APPROVE to make it go dormant.

A gnarled black ko'nag runestaff may be detailed by any merchant.

Currently, you are able to really get some sauce for your efforts when you LEAN, RAISE, TAP, and WAVE this runestaff, though you get the feeling that you will only see results if you are of a magical profession.

You might be able to have a talented merchant lighten the black ko'nag runestaff for you.

>lean my rune
Your eyes darken as you lean softly against your black ko'nag runestaff, gathering your power.
Teiana's eyes darken as she leans softly against her black ko'nag runestaff.

>raise my rune
You raise your black ko'nag runestaff and trace an eldritch sign as tendrils of shadow gather briefly about you.
Teiana raises her black ko'nag runestaff and traces an eldritch sign as tendrils of shadow gather briefly about her.

>tap my rune
You lower the tip of your black ko'nag runestaff to the ground and trace a pattern, which glows with a sickly green light. You firmly tap the pattern with your runestaff, and a circle of shifting bones rises from the ground beneath you and then disappears.

loresong:

>Vellara's eyes drift back into focus, and her hand curls tightly around the runestaff.
Melody and memory collide in a brilliant cascade of shimmering notes. Your surroundings suddenly fade, and you find yourself in the middle of a deep forest. The canopy is thick, but the dappled sunlight peeking through provides more than adequate illumination. Just ahead, an elderly gnome trudges down a well-worn path, leading an extremely fat grey pony. The pony plods obediently behind him, carrying an odd assortment of sticks in addition to his already substantial burden. In a burst of color, your vision fades.

>Vellara's eyes squeeze shut as she trembles slightly. After a moment, she opens her eyes and appears shaken.
Voice and vision intertwine in a dizzying array of color and tone. You find yourself inside a small one-room cabin. The elderly gnome from the forest path sits in a rocking chair, with a whittling knife. Across his lap rests a large branch of wood, which he is carefully smoothing, tapering, and shaping into a well-balanced and beautiful staff. Working at an astonishing speed, he carves a sinister claw at the top-end of the staff. A discordant note rises between you and the staff, pushing you into darkness. After a moment, the darkness lifts, and you notice with a start that your surroundings have shifted.

>Vellara's face pales for a moment and then returns to normal.
Song and staff struggle against your will, creating a cacophony of crossed senses while the world goes black around the edges. In your mind's eye, you see the now-familiar gnomish whittler still sitting in his rocking chair. After thoroughly inspecting his work, the whittler stands and walks across the room, dragging the staff behind him. From a petite chest, he pulls a tiny amber ball and deftly places it inside the claw atop the large wood runestaff. He holds the staff up to the light, and you notice a dark occlusion in the stone. It appears as if a long bug, perhaps a caterpillar, has been trapped within the amber. The threads of the vision begin to unravel, and you are left feeling queasy and unsettled.

>Vellara's voice trails off suddenly. She leans heavily on the runestaff, obviously disoriented.
At the sound of your voice, the staff yields easily, and you are plunged once more into darkness. As your vision returns, you are confronted by a golden slit-pupil eye staring directly at you. With a sigh of relief, you recognize the eye as the decorative amber globe on the whittler's ebonwood runestaff. He appears to be hard at work on another staff, this time one of silver haon. He has finished the basic shaping and tapering and is concentrating on the decorative carving for the top. Working carefully, he has roughed out a series of five interlocking rings. As he continues to refine his design, your concentration falters, and you find yourself being drawn back to the present.

So I am looking at certain dates to sign up and I notice dates that already have 1 person signed up. Is there a minimum number of people that is advised to go in order to be effective?

No. I've been in with nine others and have run solo runs. Both work as well. The number of prisioners that need to be freed is relative to the number of people on the quest]

Also, what if only 2 people sign up and 1 is 80 trains and the other 30? Does that make a big difference?

Makes a difference if you do the quest together sided by side in terms of the level of Krolvin that come out to meet you. I am not a techno geek when it comes to how these things work, but based on the quests completed, my advice would be to hunt with similar aged folk in there. That being said, I did the quest with folk who were 50 trains below me and their spells more than matched my brawn! Even if you hunt separately, there is benefit to different groups being in there at the same time - sharing skills/spells; helping each other when the Krolvin insist on hog tying us etc..

If I am wanting to sign up for 4 runs, do I just go ahead and pick the 4 runs that best suit my schedule and then hope the right amount/level of other characters sign up?

Yes, or if you want to do a run at a specific time with like minded friends, then you can request a particular private slot. Just send an email to quests@simutronics.com stating which quest you are interested in, when you'd like it run (day and time) and your character and account name. NOT your password! If they can meet your needs than you will be given a password and the slot will appear in the quest page with a padlock against. You will need to enter the password to secure your place and to share that password with this who will be doing this private run with you.

I think that's it. I am sure other will add info if I have missed anything out.

I have a rough cost breakdown on my Google Doc for this - http://tinyurl.com/mhgkyb3

Both real dollars and in game silvers given a current(ish) conversion rate. Per run you can get between 50 to 150 blackscrip, so I put columns in for 50, 100, and 150 achieved per run.

Currently the top prize is a hedgehog pet which will run you 1,000 blackscrip, or roughly $60/6m silver if you are able to max out every run for 7 runs of the quest.

You get extra mana via MANA PULSE; more than normal. Not sure why. If you can, take advantage of it.

The creatures spawn for your level range, if you don't attack the creatures above your level range, they won't attack you directly.
-The messaging is something like: krolvin XXX stalks towards YOU.
--It will say YOU. Attack THOSE creatures, leave the rest alone.
---Makes group hunting easy.

The third level has an arch to the treasure room. [SAY Lalk gno'ap renqua to!] to enter. Search each pile twice. Sanct the room if possible.

The blood in the first room of the second level, RUB it, then RUB the SOUTHERN arch to enter the Captain's Quarters. Never found anything myself, but that room MIGHT have an increased gen rate. Heavy on the MIGHT.

If you die, then DEPART or get dragged away, you'll get attached to the main mast one room west of the stairs on the first floor. JUMP to loosen them. Helps to get someone to sanct/kill creatures in that room, as they can re-tighten your bindings.

Also, kill SLAVERS first at all costs. They can insta-gank you/your prisoner. If they gank you, you end up tied to the main mast. If they gank your prisoner, they end up back in a cell. It may or may not be a cell your already opened.

Opening cells: I used 111. You need to burn/destroy these somehow. Not sure what else works.
-With 111, you can set them ablaze with 3/4 casts, then move onto another door. They will continue to burn for a while. May burn down when you're not there.

PRISONERS: They act as VERY FUCKING SLOW escorts. TELL PRISONER TO FOLLOW. Once again, annihilate slavers when they spawn. However, other creatures can take prisoners away as well, but are less likely if you're in the room with them. Slavers will insta-gank whether you're in the room or not.

There are pickable/disarmable chests spread throughout the ship. Never opened one myself. Not sure if anything good is in them. :(

TICKET will tell you how many blackscripts you've earned, AFTER you're back at the Wharf.

If you exit the Wharf, you're in the Landing. If you go through the portal, it takes you back where you came. Can exit the Wharf, then come back and go through the portal if necessary.

I ganked the sign explaining the treasure a while back. It wasn't nailed down. They never replaced it. I SO SORRY.

I used to shove my loot under the bench. But on the deck works fine. Never lost anything doing that in over 15 runs]

I've always used 'wiggle'

Really good advice. Will save loads of potential frustration. Also, you don't need to kill the Krolvin to get that lard ass prisioner to move. I stun the, move to the next room and eventually the prisoner follows. Just saves some time. (Only once has a Krolvin captured my prisoner when I've done that.

Warriors - bash the door down. Haste helps, but is not necessary.

Often coins and a gem. But loot is loot!

Additional advice

1. Give yourself a minimum of 5 minutes to pick your loot up. I always give myself 10 minutes. Ain't gonna make much difference regarding the overall total of blackscrip you get - unless you've had a shocker of a session, got auto healed loads or died loads in which case a few more kills may help.

2. Critters spawn bloody slowly once you've got your prisoners home but don't be tempted to end the quest early. I ended one just over the hour having rescued all and killed many and got low payment in the end.

3. Drop your coins on the deck between hunts if you're a slogger like me. Also getting something beyond strength, which increases your maximum lifting capacity helps with the loot. The ad guild feather is useful. Why leave stuff behind if ye don't have to.

4. Take your own herbs and drop them on the deck.

5. Some of that loot is heavy as hell. Forget the iron armor. Don't waste your time carrying it out if you are limited for space. But other half plates, breast plates can be up to 35k at pawnshop. Think about that also if you have a box. It's easy to be tempted by a box that weighs 40 pounds. But that's just going to be coins for the most part and no where near 35k you'll get for the armor.

6. don't forget burn that ship down. I've found that loading my shit first and then RAZEing the ship is less stressful when it comes to picking up loot, as the clock starts ticking when you RAZE. But it's risky. In theory you could get hit in that 20 second rt. You are vulnerable in theory to attack. (Never been attacked yet after razing but still...)

Am sure others can add info based upon their own experiences.

I'm waiting for the new list of items in the new year. If there's something I can use i'll do more quests. If not, will redeem my scrip for things I can sell and leave it there. The Loss of the orb as a prize was a deal breaker for me. Should have stocked up while I had the chance. Was the best damn prize.

Le sigh

This happened to me once (a cloak I dropped in order to later stuff full of stuff) but the item was one of the treasure room items and maybe is flagged differently then the treasure system/spawned stuff.

I've always used 'wiggle'

I used berserk, but doesn't break out faster (if initiated while roped that is)

This can happen and I greedily often wait, even after a raze, until the last minute for every possibly spawned kill :D

I've not gotten a chance to do this quest and am debating it now that I've got some time off around the holidays.

Questions:
- Do any of the krolvin disarm? Debating whether it's safe to bring my souped up longbow or if I should bring one worth less - I'm blind IRL and have a hard time catching the messaging when I get disarmed in a swarm.
- Is it possible to hide or use Camouflage at all? I do like sniping.
- Does Calming the krolvin slavers work to prevent them from recapturing prisoners? I often use Mass Calm as a way to crowd control. Though have to hope Mass Calming wouldn't count as me attacking a higher level creature not meant for me - I notice a lot of capped characters already signed up for the upcoming quest runs and wouldn't want a capped krol coming after me.

I have a L50 Ranger, for the sake of things. Not sure what would be best to break down the prisoner cells, either - just bashing? Unfortunately I don't have access to 111 yet - think I'm one level off.

mass clam will work for like .5 seconds...enough to get your breath back but not worth it really...they don't disarm so feel free to use your nice longbow just bring ebladed arrows and lots of em.

as to cell doors...prep 111 and then cast door...its mana intensive but bashing takes 10 second rt? at least it did for me trying to use an axe.

Thanks for posting this and to the person who let me know about the officials posting.

A more general question about enhansives - but relevant as I see two enhansives I might acquire. What's the maximum number of enhansives a person can wear? (Assuming it's slot based to one on head, one on ear etc etc.)

Not my area of expertise? Hence the question.

Yup I bought one, I just have yet to run into any half krol to test it on..... I assume it works like the other language cuffs though, and it has some fancy messaging about feeling a dawning understanding or somesuch when you put it on.

The spirals work the same as any other language earcuff. They let you understand the language in the language system.
If a player is using the player-made Dhe'narsi language, the earcuff ain't gonna do jack for you. If the player is using SPEAK DHE'NAR or whatever it is, you'll understand it if you are wearing a Dhe'nar language earcuff.
The spiral works the same for any Krolvin language. If it's tagged as Krolvin in the language system, you'll hear it just as if you were a HK. If someone is just using the lexicon and speaking in Common, I can't help.
As an example of what you might hear, the krolvin on the ship have an idle message where they shift into defensive posture and do either "A puny krolvin blade shifts into a defensive stance while muttering to himself in Krolvin, 'A dumb krolvin is a dead krolvin'" if you understand the language or "Awrdakra krol kak burzmokt krol" if you don't. There are other messages where you'll just get "X says something in Krolvin." if you don't understand.
There is no messaging to let you know that the spiral is working. It works as long as you are wearing it.
~Vanah

My one disappointment was that I was hoping the earcuff was capable of being used strategically on the quest ...to enable me to hear something that would perhaps open up some new element / aspect to this quest. It does work to allow you to hear what they are saying but what they are saying adds little value to the quest. (Unless I have missed something.)

My hope is that I future, outside the quest itself, the earcuff could be used to interact with Krolvin invaders or overhear plans discussed between themselves. Now THAT would be the dogs bollocks as we say in the UK!

Would someone mind refreshing me on the layout of the ship? I've done a couple of runs but I'm doing one tomorrow and want to make sure I remember more or less where I'm going.

Is it that when you get on the ship, you more or less go east (ne/se/etc) until you find a door? Then there are 3 levels, the deck level plus 2 levels below that, that each have prison cells? And which level is the treasure room on?

I appreciate any help that anyone can give.

There is a good overview by TheLastShamurai on page 12 of this thread. The only thing that got me stuck was....

<<The blood in the first room of the second level, RUB it, then RUB the SOUTHERN arch to enter the Captain's Quarters. Never found anything myself, but that room MIGHT have an increased gen rate. Heavy on the MIGHT.>>

I kept trying and trying and then realized it was the SOUTHERN HATCH that needed to be rubbed, not the arch.

Cryogic, thanks again for the quick reply! I was able to use the info to save my first run and get the full 150 scrip! :salute:

It was a lot of fun. I really enjoy the quests. I just wish they'd put new prizes out. I did get a nice full coverage armor concealer for my wizard (the robes).
