But thanks to some speeding jackass college kid now I have a nasty concussion and a bad case of whiplash.
Oh, and one totalled car.
Fucking asshole is lucky I didn't kill him.
It amounts to a four car pile up with me not at fault.
more details when I feel less like shit.
Holy shit, that's horrible.
Are you sure your back doesn't hurt too?
Betheny
09-19-2004, 09:46 PM
I think the only thing that doesn't hurt is my left foot. Har.
The car is totalled. I had it for 3 days... The had to pull me out of the car.
Four car pile up, five of the seven of us involved ended up hospitalized. One of my passengers is unscathed, as well as the guy that caused the wreck. Dude was going about 65 in a 30 zone and he slammed the guy behind me. I saw it coming so I put my foot all the way down on the brake, but the momentum was so great because of his speed that my car was pushed (seven foot skid marks from my tires) into the truck in front of me.
The car is totalled. I'm so fucking upset, I'm not sure what to do. I filed my insurance claim and they're giving me a loaner but godfuckingdamnit I want to gut this motherfucking kid.

I have had a killer headache all weekend, and my back DOES hurt.

I donated my 93 Explorer to charity because it didn't have an airbag and I knew if I got tailswiped by some similar asshole 16 year old I would become one with the inner struts. Now I've got a 05 Outback with airbags on top of airbags.
I'd totally go postal if someone smashed it up...I've only had it for 2 weeks.

Hopefully nothing will be a serious problem (that you were injured with) and that the insurance will fully cover your car so you can get a new one.

I'll IM ya Beth, soon as you regain consciousness (you're idle on my buddy list). But in case you read this before I see you wake up:
Something the insurance companies might not consider...
Physical trauma to the spine (including whiplash) can exacerbate degenerative disk disease. This "disease" isn't really a disease. It's part of the aging process, where the fluid that keeps the disks spongey starts to dry up, resulting in pain and hunched posture and difficulty walking/standing/moving when you're laying down (among other things). It can also trigger spinal injuries down the line. You won't know this has happened to you, until it happens to you. And that might not be for another 10, 20, or 30 years.
Most healthy adults will not get the onset of DDD until they hit their 40's, and not notice any symptoms of it until well into their 50's. But if you have received trauma to the spine you could get the onset of DDD as early as 25-30 years old - and start feeling its effects before you turn 40. By the time you're 50 years old, you could have the same back problems that you hear most people at age 70 complain about.
This is -exactly- what happened to me. 22 years old, car accident, broken arm, leg, collarbone, 3 ribs, and no known problem to the back. But - the physical trauma of impact with the pavement DID cause trauma that simply wasn't a break that would show up on an x-ray. Fast forward 10 years, and I'm having trouble getting out of bed when the air is cold and dry. I can't roll over - the pain is too excruciating. Doctor sends me to testing - MRI shows that two of my disks have almost completely dried up. He recommends spinal surgery. I tell him to eat shit and bark at the moon. I learn how to support my body through stomach exercises so that my muscles can do the work that my spine can no longer do.
I manage fine most of the time. But Autumn is the worse because the barometer changes have the greatest affect on this kind of thing. Fast forward another 10 years to the present, and you'll see me going to the doctor's office in the next few weeks asking them for my seasonal prescription of percosette. I MUST have narcotics this time of year - no over the counter pain relievers will work. It really _is_ that bad. And I'm only 43 years old. While the rest of my "self" is doing pretty well, I'm worried about the next decade when menopause sets in and I need to worry about osteoperosis. Doc says that my chance of it hitting my spine before it hits anything else is pretty high. They expect I'll be in a wheelchair before I turn 60.
All because I was in a car accident and didn't get an MRI to check my spine, because I didn't get thrown onto my spine when I was thrown to the ground in the accident.
GET AN MRI. Take a valium if you have to, if you're claustrophobic. Demand this procedure. Go to a chiropractor also to get their opinion. You don't necessarily need to get treatments - but definitely get their opinion on the current state and possible future outcome of your spinal condition.
If they find anything, be SURE to include this information when you make your claim to the insurance company and a lawyer.

we were on 193 in Great Falls by River Bend Road... someone was turning; so I stopped, about half a car length behind the guy in front of me. I happened to look in the rear view mirror (I guess, i don't remember, i lost consciousness) and my friend said I saw it coming and said Oh shit we're going to get slammed... so I stomped on the brake and we got pwned.
next thing I remember they're pulling me out of the car cause I couldn't get out, my friend's husband was bleeding all over, and there were cops everywhere.
The guy behind us broke his back -- the kid hit him hard enough that his trunk ended up in the back seat (and it was a crown vic) , the passenger of that car broke her ribs on the dash (she was wearing a seatbelt).
i got a rental for now -- by the way, Geico is awesome. I really, really <3 them.
ps, if there's no lasting injuries, i'm only going to go after the kid for damages -- my insurance company is anyway, i'mgonna make him pay for my deductible.
The really sucky thing is that car was a DEAL -- pristine condition, great gas mileage... no problems... now i have to try and find another one... :(

Haha. i was on my way back from picking my friends up at BWI, they were on their honeymoon cruise, and the beltway was majorly fucked, so we took that way because it's scenic and will get us to where we were going (leesburg / highway 7).
I have to figure out what geico is going to give me for the car, they'll probably give me more than I paid for it because I got a fucking awesome deal on it -- 4500 after tax/title/license all that stuff for a 99 saturn sl2 in perfect condition. they gave me a great deal since we paid cash.
anyway, once i talk to the adjuster I'll have more info.

they've been really good to me; it remains to be seen what they are gonna do with the car. retail value on the car is more than what I paid for it (by about 1500), but I don't know how they go.

You'll get a call from an insurance agent. He'll try to settle with you quickly over the phone. This is when you HAGGLE. You definitely will NOT get retail, but you should make sure you don't lose money on the deal if possible. Remember, they have to settle with you. You have all the time in the world. If you aren't satisfied with the offer, tell the agent you'll call him back tomorrow... or next week.

I switched to Geico a little over a year ago. I was with Progressive (because my driving record sucked ass) - but I've gotten a few less tickets and Geico was cheaper.
About 6 months ago someone nailed the rear end of my car when it was in front of my house (middle of the night). No note - nothing. I saw it in the morning (taillight glass on the ground), called the cops (who were very nice), and then my insurance company. Brought it into one of their centers on the way to work - they scheduled for me to drop it off at one of their suggested shops that day. And they covered my 3 days rental (Mustang, yummy).
No complaints about Geico.

Get back on topic.
Beth, have you heard anymore about how much you'll get for your car, or have you looked into getting another one? This must be very frustrating for you. :(
HarmNone hopes you get enough to get something you love

I talked to my adjuster today; they're going to look at it today. I'll know by afternoon tomorrow what's up. I'm pretty sure it's totalled though, I posted pictures, will get better ones if I can.

Heh, they're going to give me 5200...
<3
I'm not making money off this, considering I'm paying more for the car I'm picking up tonight, but at least I'm going to break even. That makes me happy. :)

That's wonderful, Beth! Breaking even is one heck of a lot better than NOT breaking even. :)

Actually, I WILL be making a 700 dollar profit on this entire deal, once I get the 500 back for my deductible... Heh.
I'm just that special.
