So this past weekend my house has been the subject of random power disconnections. And last night, I was playing Gemstone and my computer monitor all of the sudden flashed "no signal" Which is the message I get when my computer shuts off. Well my computer was still running, but instead of a green light it was a yellow light. Well that meant my computer was sleeping.

Well I turned off power save on the thing when I got it because everytime it would go into sleep mode I could never get it back on like it was supposed to be. That was 2 years ago and damn if I've forgotten how to fix it.

Well here's the problem. I can't get the computer to turn back on at all without it going directly into sleep mode. I've cold booted it which sends me to this screen asking if I wanted to start it up regularly or in safe mode, it doesn't matter which mode I choose to start it on...as soon as it gets ready to flash the windows xp screen that lets me know its about ready to start, BOOM into sleep mode. My monitor will turn off and even if I wanted to see what was going on, I can't.

what the figggy do I do? I've got like 35 things to do on my computer today so if someone could help me it would be swell.

you can IM me at diethisway if you're so inclined.

1) Check the monitor, but plugging it into another computer and test if it works. If it does, it will mostly be your video card that's inside the computer.

2) Also, before buying a new video card, you can check it by plugging it into another motherboard and test it with another monitor.

If your computer is put in sleep mode, then there is no link with the computer video output.

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Dude most monitors don't have those. You have to buy them seperate.

I switched out monitors with to a newer monitor that I had in my closet and its the same problem. It's not the monitor.

and forgive me for not being as computer savvy as to know what the heck it means to get a new power supply...or how to do that.

is there anything i can do just to get the darn thing turned on in non sleep mode would be my point in asking for help here.

Did you try it in Safe Mode?

Most Monitors have a plug that connects the monitor itself to the video card in your computer.

Like I said before, the only reason it goes into sleep mode is because the computer is not getting any info from the computer.

From the sound of it, it seems your video card has gone.

Can't be the power supply since the monitor is on another power supply and it goes into sleep mode.

alright, so I bent over and called HP. They raped me for 40 bucks to have me turn the computer on and off a million times, then reformat the dumb thing.

I was all, "dear lady from india, if i knew all i had to do was reformat, i would have done so for free. byebye."

anyway, long story short...the computer is working now.
