View Full Version : Want to make a Warrior

Hello Warriors.

I have been playing my wizard, and only my wizard, since I started playing 7ish months ago. I got her to lvl 42 and I love playing her.

But recently, I have felt the urge to make a melee character. (In every game I played, I have always played a caster or healer.) I am torn between a warrior and a paladin. I know I want to remain a sylvankind or try an elven warrior out. I am curious what you guys think and would appreciate your input.

1. I want to remain an elf. I prefer Sylvan.

2. I have gear passed down to me from my brother (Golvern Morningstar/x5 shields/some nice polearms/decent edged weapons) I also purchased some female armor from Talador. The emerald vultite breastplate.

3. I want to set my stats for growth. But if that will make me a gimp, I can adjust them to make leveling up easier. Your input here would be appreciated.

I thank you all ahead of time and eagerly await your replies.

Anything is doable. Heavy hitting weapons, polearms/two-handed, are a lot easier to level up with when you start but one-handed weapons are still decent. The new shield maneuvers are great and make those builds a lot more desirable. Stats set for growth will make things a bit more difficult when you start but as long as you aren't impatient it isn't that horrible. I suggest that during your 30 days you play around a bit and figure out what you want, also find someone with the skill sets you are interested in and see if you can tag along on a couple of their hunts so you can see what it looks like and if that is something you want to do.

Jeril! I love your avatar.

Thank you for replying. I see my sylvan warriess (yes I spelled it that way) being a shield user. She will be graceful, quick, and brave. I think edged weapons would best suit her intended style. But that golvern Morningstar is x5 and crit weighted.. very tempting. I don't see that many ohb using warriors around.

I await more replies. And if anyone has any saved logs of ohe/shield or ohb/shield combat, I would love to see them to see how viable the style is further down the road.. say 50-60ish.

Ohb + shield is certainly viable, especially with the new shield specs and I imagine ohe is no different. You will have to rely on death crits/ambushing to compare to the raw damage from THW. But having access to some of the best defense, crowd control and setup maneuvers warriors have available makes that doable. You will most likely notice the difference in damage potential when facing non-corps and other things that cannot be crit killed, though. The shield manuevers are incredible though. My warrior was blunt/shield/twc with two morningstars and dervish and could kill anything with ease. I have since switched to katanas for RP but still have 2.5x shield use or so just to use shield trample. That move is ridiculous.

I retrained my Warrior to a Paladin, no good reason, just felt like it. He was a two weapon OHE user with mstrike before and while fun, he was very susceptible to being hit. I went sword/board when I retrained to Paladin and liked it but things just do not die as quickly. He is GoS so he had to have mstrike for crowd control so he does not train in ambush which is what really makes one handed weapons viable. Having said that I recently fix skilled him into poles and now things die quick, fast, and a hurry. He is using a fusion naginata for now, but when he can swing it in 5 seconds I have a DCW T1 lance for him to use, that in addition to sigils and mstrike will make him a wrecking crew. There is really no wrong way to go, I have always let my RP choices dictate what I did, so if you see her as a OHB swinger, do that. I would not let what you happen to have around dictate what she swings, at least not after 30 days. She should be what she is, gear is fairly easy to come by.

Warriors and Paladins are two incredibly effective and strong classes. Jeril is definitely a tool to leverage for warrior and melee information. It kind of comes down to the vision that you have for your character.

If you like the idea of maintaining a little bit of spiritual magic while still being an adept fighter, then paladin would be a good option.
If you like the idea of being a flurry of berserking death, then warrior would be a good option.

In regards to mechanics, if you are placing your stats for growth, you would have more success in the OHB/Shield build than a polearm build. With either build, DEXAGL will play into RT. In a OH build, it'll play a part when eventually aiming, in the polearm, it'll just play into the weapon selection from day 1. Since you're placing your stats for growth, the OH build would better fit... Once you're ready to start aiming with ambushing (from the open), hopefully your DEXAGL has grown sufficiently to account for the higher RT... Well, that's if you decide to go the aiming route.

All Race/Class options in Gemstone are viable. It really comes down to what you want, and how you envision your character. We shouldn't be convincing you what you want!

Here is my advice. Ta'vaalor sucks. Reroll.

As a warrior you are likely going to have a lot of spare mental training points and kind of like playing a pure don't be afraid to convert them. Spend those points on your physical skills, you don't need the MIU/AS right now, and may not need the harness power, which is society dependent.

A basic plan for you would look like
2-3x armor
3x shield use
2x edge
2x cman
2x PF
1x climb/swim
1x perception
1x MoC
20-25 ranks ambush

Start off with 2x armor, fit in everything else(including first aid and survival if you want to have them) then start working it up towards 3x until you get 150 ranks(for 5 ranks of support) and then stop.

You're going to get bored being a tank! Go rogue instead if you want to be quick!

Hey, what happens, stays in my closet. I'd rather let my quickness a mystery to people who does not know me

Dayko,

Just remember that I hang out with you in the Landing.. Speedy. Quick and Fast are not always good qualities. ;-)

As far as living in Ta'Vaalor. I enjoy the fortress. Vhanya will see The Landing and Icemule soon enough. Besides. Its much richer out east than it its in the west.

I will try:
x3 armor
x3 shield
x2 edged (Switching to ohb when im ready)
x2 CM
x2 PT
x1 Perc.
x1 MoC
x1 Ambush
x1 climb/swim.
x1 First Aid

Keep the advice coming!

Ditch the edged and pick up a polearm. Shits cool. You can be like Achilles from the movie Troy, swap to a two handed grip, and berserk an entire room!

I do have a vultite lance if I every went that route.

As you can see my dexterity and agility are set for growth. Maybe when I am older.

I'd say you should max out your logic/discipline if its still your first 30 days, then use another stat placement to switch em back for growth when you're level 20+, before your 30 days ends. That way you can get past lower levels without the pain of low stats and still have full growth. You can tank influence and intuition, so your dex and agility aren't so unbearable.

The only thing I can really see is that you aren't quite at the 3x, 2x, spots that you want to be, for level 8, 3x is 30 ranks and 2x is 20 ranks. The big ones to hit first would be weapon skill, PF, combat maneuvers, shield, then armor. You are also only 2x in shield use, you'll want to be aiming for 3x, the difference isn't hurting you too much now but you'll likely want that caught up sooner rather then later.

even if you want to end up with OHE/shield, you might want to switch to THW or Polearms for the first 30 days and then switch back. Shield doesn't really come into its own until later when you get the fun shield skills :)
