I recently purchased my first ever "super awesome omfg" smartphone. I got a nexus 5. I've always had shitty, shitty flip phones and durable nokias.

I'm really impressed with the speed of this phone, and I'm loving it, the thing is - I don't know about any nice apps that are out there.

You guys are hereby enlisted to fill this thread with suggestions!

What are some awesome apps that you use everyday?

amazon kindle
current caller id
Uber (if Uber serves Austin, it's a car service)
adobe reader
chrome browser
mightytext (access your text messages from a browser on your PC, send and receive texts, have the caller id pop up on your monitor)
llama (changes your phones settings based on what cell tower you're getting a signal from. so it will automatically put it on vibrate when you get to work, silence it at night and unsilence in the morning, turn the wifi on and off depending on where you are, etc. etc.)
all of the premium cable channel apps that let you watch movies on demand
hangouts (gchat)
mlb at bat
whatever parking app your city uses
scoutmob (good local deals)
all sports gps pro
easy tether (use your phone as your internet service on your pc, well worth the $10, sometimes on sale)

In general I like to get my apps from the google play store, but the amazon app store has a free app every day that's usually a pay one and each sometimes has an app that the other doesn't have.

games that are not angry birds:
airport mania 2
eve of the genesis
symphony of eternity
treasures of montezuma 2 and 3

Awesome list! I like the sound of llama, seems pretty useful. Is the amazon app store a separate app? Or do I just get apps from amazon.com?

it is a separate app that you'll need to run updates. but you can also buy from amazon.com and it will automatically sync to your phone if you register your phone on your account.

llama takes a little tinkering depending on where you are and what you do the days you set it up, but once all the settings are in it's really fantastic. If it seems to not be working (you get a ringtone instead of vibrate at work for example), it usually means it is getting a signal from a new tower that it has not been trained for yet.

If you want to tether, don't pay for a third part app. You can find easily how to tether using the built in hotspot at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2581035. I used the flash zip method in post 4 since I root my phones, but if you aren't interested in rooting people said they were successful using the terminal command in the same post. More info on rooting is available on that same forum and couldn't be easier.

Also, the internet is full of stories about how fragile the nexus 5 is. It may be a coincidence but my evo took many many falls at work and worked fine after putting the battery back in/attaching the back cover. A few light scratches but never a crack. My nexus 5 took a dive and shattered on the first one. I have never used a case on my phones because I didn't buy a nice slim device to wrap it in an inch of plastic like the egg baby from 8th grade. That being said, when I get around to fixing the screen I will most likely get at least a slim case to give a little cushion for the edges of the screen.

Enjoy the new phone!

That's a scary thought! I ordered a case for it last night from amazon. I don't know anything about tethering, but am around wifi for 90% of the day, so I don't think I'll need to do that

it's best for when your internet goes out or you're on the road. I had to tether for EG last year when I had a full weekend outage (which led to me dropping Verizon DSL)

You can get insurance for 10 bucks a month. My Maxx is 600 bucks and I'm a klutz so it's worth it to me.

Phone Trackr can be handy for your phone or other phones in your family.
A flashlight app for obvious reasons.
And I have Google Sky Map on mine because I like knowing what constellation I'm looking at when walking at night.

edit: must reiterate, Kindle app is fantastic. I got the audible app for when I drive and it syncs whatever page I'm on between the text and the audible.

Spritz when it is actually available. Kindle. S Health. Steam. Fandango. Duolingo.

I walk a LOT so I tried out various free pedometer apps but ended up buying Runtastic's app because of the reviews. I like it so far.

someone asked: how the fuck you get chrome on kindle fire?

I don't have chrome on my kindle fire, I have chrome on my galaxy S4. I was recommending Amazon Kindle as an app to download.

That said, and I haven't tried yet since I don't do much net browsing on my Kindle, but you could probably side-load chrome. http://www.ubergizmo.com/2011/11/kindle-fire-sideload/

I use mine to make calls and to text, sometimes I use the calculator when figure out board feet. The other crap on my phone has been installed by my kids.
