So very many reasons. I don't play "pay for perks" games, I don't gamble, I don't use lnet chat wasteland, and I'm not friends with any GM, and I'm a RP purist. Paid festivals were the perfect storm of everything I hated. When they expanded to the recent system of pay for individual perks, it was the straw that broke the camel's back for me.
It also helped that I had recently moved and was doing far more socializing in real life. Had I stayed in my old apartment, I probably would have put up with the game crap I hated, just for the sake of escaping reality. Let's face it, when most people rage quit, they usually have some kind of real life reason/stress, and blame some minor change in the game, then they come crawling back a few months later.

Complete lack of Wizard dev. There's never anything new to do or play with, and since capping the game has become a chore. Deactiated in December, came back in February, had to force myself to even play Gift. Deactivated again today. The game may be dead for me. I'd probably keep an account open just to pop in once in a while if it was cheaper to do so.

Would you say the lack of players is a major reason for leaving GemStone?
Put another way, would you have left GemStone if there were still 2,000+ players on at a time during peak hours? And if Elanthia wasn't so spread out, as in pre-EN days?

I've been a fan of Gemstone III/IV since early 2000. I kept coming back to it and I always enjoyed it over most MMOs, due to how much you could do and roleplay.
Today, I just can't see myself paying a fee, especially $15, when there are so many free-to-play MUDs out there. Not to mention how many good MMOs are out there with no subscription fee.
Yes, I would be much more inclined to play GSIV if there were more people playing as well. However, I believe getting rid of subscriptions fees would help with that. Will we ever see the days of 2k players again? Probably not, but who knows.

Lack of time. I like having a premium subscription because I like options but, it's hard to justify the expense when I only log on two or three times a month. So I deactivate. Then I have a block of time (usually once a year) and I reactivate or create a new account and start over. Then life strikes and the cycle starts over.
It's a vicious circle.

I'm telling you guys, play only to make some extra change for your families, and you will have the drive and find the time to play it a lot. Not only that, but it will be acceptable to God, because as someone told me in game who said it correctly by the way, there are laws about making money for yourself.

Playing GemStone to make money? Sounds like a grind. GemStone costs me money. If I wanted to make money, I'd take another job. With a million silvers selling for $8-$10, I can't see how GemStone is a time-effective way to make money.

Why not play for both fun and money to give your family? To help them with food, water, and clothing? To help others in need to of the same things?
Of course, if you're someone out there with a full time job, it can be very tiring to even think of being able to play for any reason pretty much, because you're so tired by the time you get home that you can barely think straight.
In that case, pick your 2 days off to grind for 8 hours each.

The below message that you typed shows that you have some serious misconceptions.
Now this is VERY important to understand. The American dollar is soon probably going to be worth almost nothing. You won’t be able to trade American dollars for ANYTHING at a certain point in the future. Practically anyways. However, if you are invested in some of these virtual economies and currencies that exist within virtual realms out there on the web, then you might actually be able to trade that currency during the worst of times in America for other currencies around the world. Or exchange it for them I should say.
I’m no economist, but I know this is simple economics. Many people have already heard the story of the girl who made a million dollars in real estate within the virtual economy of the game Second Life. Well, there are other Virtual economies that exist out there as well, such as the WOW economy, etc. Basically any game that has a thriving virtual economy is going to be something that might just have the power to help keep your family afloat during the death of the dollar as long as people start to invest in them now.
This may actually be a way to help your family eat and drink during the coming hard times. ...
So you see folks, these Virtual economies are actually not a joke. What they are is an escape from the United States stock market, in a way, and an investment in an entirely different type of economy. A virtual one. ...
This is a very viable solution to a major problem that we have coming to us very soon. ...
I can see a trend happening in the future where people start jumping into these virtual economies when the American one crashes and then selling the in game currencies from those virtual realms for real Life currencies that are more stable than the American dollar.
Why not? After all, it will make perfect economical sense, by then.
Rule number one is NEVER invest in a virtual currency that isn’t directly tied into a virtual economy, such as was the case with Bit Coin. Bit coin was tied into nothing, and so therefore it was nothing but a scam.
Only use the virtual currency that is tied into it’s own virtual economy. Anything else that claims to be a virtual currency but has no virtual economy where it originates is an illusion. All virtual currencies need to be confined to the virtual realm in which they originated in order for them to be functional. Virtual economies like Second Life function very similar to real world markets and economies.
Also, always take natural disasters into consideration. I myself think we might have some extreme changes coming. But we just don’t know exactly how it’s going to play out, because we don’t know the mind of God. We have an idea, from the Holy Bible, but only God knows exactly when and where. So in the meantime, I recommend people start storing up on as much food and water and supplies as possible for the future.
But there is most likely going to be a long drawn out period of misery in the United States, while power will still exist. So this is one way to help your family out, by getting involved in some of the Virtual economy systems out there.

This board, the PC, is an established, reputable, and thriving place to buy and sell GS goods and services. Why should people use your newly created board with 0 users?
So I'm saying keep it as a backup, or use it now I don't care.
Heck, create 50 boards, and sell on them too.
Spread the economy out man. When you have everything limited to this one board that's not very safe. Anything could happen to this board and then bam, the GS4 economy is destroyed.
No, you want safety nets in case that happens.
FlapJacks
03-30-2014, 07:43 PM
Plus, people can start getting tyrannical on this board and just start booting anyone they want here, or giving them bad reputation points, as they have been doing, which limits their ability to sell, because people might judge them based off of the bad reputation.
To safeguard against that, we have to have other boards besides this one.

Cuz fornication is a sin, Lusting with the eyes and masturbating is a sin, and Adultery is a sin.
Neither foricators or Adulterers will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
You can still have sex with your wife and or husband whenever, but when you can't seem to control your urges, fasting helps tremendously.
I myself fast for about 10-12 hours a day from food. And just drink nothing but liquids during that time. Water, Juice, Coffee, etc.

No, but unfortunately, like myself, Tisket suffers from the sin of Lust.
It gets passed down from generation to generation, usually from the Father. Though it can also be the Mother. Sin gets passed down through 4 generations. But the same sins that the parents suffered from, the children will face as well.
My dad suffered from Lust as well and was married 3 times, and had many girlfriends.

Love that this thread was started by a troll, and it's 10 pages now...but hell, it's a decent topic, so I'll throw my two cents in, since I can probably speak on this particular topic better than most, since I've played off and on since 1990, and left and come back several times...
I started when I was 11, pre-AOL...I want to say CompuServe but I'm not 100% on that...my parents bought me a Tandy 1000 TL/2 for my birthday, and I stumbled upon Gemstone....the first time I quit was by force from my parents, because I'd racked up such huge bills...I went through a stage of stealing my parents' credit cards to start new accounts...getting them shut down a month later...starting over...repeat ad nauseam....
When I became an adult I made an account on my own, this was 1997-ish...Ajaxx was my primary, made several other characters...at about this same time, or not much later, Everquest came out....I played that for a year or so, came back to Gemstone. A few years later I started playing Eve Online when it came out in 2001-ish...was second beta on that, played it for several years...then I played Anarchy Online for several years....then I played Eve Online again for several years...
When I started playing Eve Online for the first time, I sold all my Gemstone shit....said I was done forever. Never again. At the time, it wasn't anything specific...I just really got into Eve, and didn't see myself playing GS anymore. After my Eve stint, I started two new accounts for GS, one for me and one for my IRL wife....these are the two premium accounts we've had running since about 2004 or so. After this point, I kinda figured out i'd always eventually go back to Gemstone, so...when I started playing AO, and then Eve for the second time....I still paid my GS accounts every month. I fell into a pattern of just sending Simu $1200 every January....this paid for 2 premium accounts for the year, with some extra for event tickets. Somewhere in the back of my mind I knew, no matter what other games caught my fancy briefly, GS would always be my go-to. My baby. I regret losing Ajaxx, and Mulos, and Vilarn, and my other characters from my first account...made sure it wouldn't happen again.
Long story short...why did I leave GS? Because I was young and dumb. Now that I've played a lot of other MMOs and find myself always going back to GS....never again.

It's adult life, it goes in waves....I'll have a few months where I find an excess of time to hang out in game, then I'll go through times like now where I'm just a brief presence...but as previously referenced, GS is my game for life...I'm older now and I've played enough other games to know that this is it for me. No, no...not talking about posting times or any of that. I'm talking about how they type, the words they use...is what it is, but I pick up on details. Everyone has their own way of typing, their own pattern of words, punctuation, etc...the vast majority of us follow normal rules for English and whatnot, but...everyone has their own style, even within the normal framework.
It's nothing to do with anything they specifically "say" (type), and everything to do with how they type it.

I quit playing because of the level cap - and the numerous other changes to allegedly bring "balance": sorcerers no longer being able to train for heavy armors, hard roundtimes for spell failure, etc.
Clencher was when they offered reallocation of stats/skills to everyone despite many years of statements that said "There will never be any reallocation ever again".
There was a total of 2 characters in the game that had perfect stats. Mine was the first, and a buddy of mine was the 2nd. Everyone got for free, when I had to basically suck ass for 65+ levels to create my perfect character w/ all 100 stats.
All of those changes was a clear indication that they were attempting to make everyone "vanilla"....with everyone in a given profession ultimately ending up with the same basic level, stats, skills & spells (other than race modifiers).....so I bailed.

Not sure where you get that from....not saying there aren't cliques, there are everywhere, but...for the most part, from my perspective anyway...I really don't have any friends here. I try to be respectful, even though my opinions are usually despised in equal measure by the right and the left...I have a lot of people who I have a "professional" relationship with, people who are regular customers for me in-game, merchanting and what not...but I wouldn't call any of them friends.
I'm probably the furthest from any sort of "in crowd" you could get. And I have no problem here.
But...what about all those special times we shared?!?!?!
Damn you, playah (http://global3.memecdn.com/demon-child_o_881151.jpg)!

I meant IW, but I don't think it's Inspire either.
