Suppose we take two traditional awards (MVP and Finals MVP) and model them in the following ways:
MVP
1. Select the top four teams by record, using seeding as a tiebreaker if necessary.
2. The player with the highest WS of those teams gets 1 share, the next highest gets .7, the next highest .5, the next highest .3.
3. If there was a tie in step (1), the high WS player of the fifth team gets the last .1 share.
4. Otherwise, the high WS player of any other team gets the last .1 share.
In 2009, there was a three way tie for second place in the West, meaning that Duncan and Roy should each get the last .1 share, but it turns out it doesn't affect rankings so I ignored it. All other years functioned fine. I also considered whether teammates of the top four shares should be eligible for the fifth share, but that only happened once in 1995 for Karl Malone, and screw that guy.
Finals MVP
1. Select the three players with the highest Win Shares and give them 1, .6, and .2 shares respectively.
2. If the series goes 4 games, all three must be from the winning team.
3. If the series goes 5, the top two shares must be from the winning team.
4. If the series goes 6, the top share must be from the winning team.
5. If the series goes 7, no other criteria beyond WS are considered.
It turns out that steps (2-5) only affected the outcome of step (1) in 6 out of the 36 years in the sample.
.
Win Shares can only be calculated for the Finals back to 1978 and for the NBA as a whole back to 1974. For consistency, we will restrict ourselves to the era of 1978-present at first. Full data will follow at the end, but for now let's look at the top 10 in each category:
True MVP Shares
7.4 Magic
7.1 Jordan
5.8 LeBron
5.7 Bird
5.0 Duncan
3.5 K. Malone
3.4 Dirk
3.4 Erving
3.0 Billups
2.9 Shaq
True FMVP Shares
6.0 Michael Jordan
5.2 Magic Johnson
3.2 Shaquille O'Neal
3.0 Larry Bird
2.4 Tim Duncan
2.0 Chauncey Billups
2.0 LeBron James
2.0 Pau Gasol
1.8 Kobe Bryant
1.6 Dwyane Wade
The top four fall out pretty easily: Michael, Magic, Bird, Duncan. If LeBron earns one more true FMVP he would leapfrog Duncan and Bird, but it's pretty implausible to expect him to catch Magic or Michael.
.
Alright, what about pre-1978? The actual MVP shares look like this:
4.828 Bill Russell
4.271 Wilt Chamberlain
2.628 Bob Pettit
2.479 Oscar Robertson
2.455 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
2.089 Jerry West
1.659 Elgin Baylor
1.072 Willis Reed
0.883 Bob Cousy
0.690 Dolph Schayes
Russell cruises to an easy win for this era. Most MVP shares by a bit and most FMVP shares by a mile. It's also pretty plausible that he'd maintain striking distance in MVP shares if we were able to calculate WS for that era, as estimates put him at 16th all-time and the Celtics were MVP-eligible for 12 years as opposed to 11 for Wilt's various teams. Wilt only has five Finals appearances to work with and Pettit only four, they'd get blown out in FMVP shares no matter what. I think it's reasonable to put Russell ahead of Bird and somewhere on the level of Michael and Magic, so Duncan is out.
The bigger question mark is Kareem, the only player to play a significant span in both NBA eras. Pre-1978 he played in two Finals and even though the Bucks lost in 1974 the series went 7 and he put up prodigious numbers, so it's very likely he would get 2 more FMVP shares for a total of 3.6, putting him fourth after Michael, Magic, and Russell. His 2.1 additional true MVPs in the 1974-1977 period plus however many pre-1974 would certainly put him ahead of Duncan, and almost certainly past Bird and LeBron, so Bird's out too. This also makes it a lot less likely for LeBron to crack the top 4, as he would need at least 2 more Finals appearances.
.
Mount Rushmore: Jordan, Magic, Russell, Kareem
.
It also turns out there were 12 players who earned at least one share of MVP and FMVP from 78-present, and IMO that ranking looks like this under the general principle that FMVPs are worth more than MVPs:
7.1 6.0 Michael
7.4 5.2 Magic
5.7 3.0 Bird
5.0 2.4 Duncan
5.8 2.0 LeBron
2.9 3.2 Shaq
3.0 2.0 Billups
3.4 1.4 Erving
1.7 2.0 Pau
2.1 1.6 Kareem
1.9 1.2 Robinson
1.3 1.2 Moses
Obviously Erving and Kareem would rank far higher if the rest of their careers were included and we had an ABA stat transmogrifier, and it really tells you something about Kareem that just from 30 years old on he was a top ten player of the last forty years. For all time we would certainly expect Russell, Wilt, Pettit, and West to make the list somewhere. Maybe Reed and Baylor. Pretty good start to a top 20, I'd say!
