Anyone else out there as addicted to this show as I am? The story line, the characters, dialogue...EVERYTHING. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrleson are simply brilliant together and their characters really compliment one another. Each episode keeps getting better and better.

If you have HBO (or know someone with it so you can stream off their HBOGo account) you will not regret watching this show.

Yes. Really great show. I'd def recommend starting at the beginning. It's a really long set-up to whats happening in the most recent episode.

How would you describe it to someone? It's about two Louisianna detectives who worked on a serial killer case in the past. The story unfolds as the two are being interviewed, separately, by other detectives years later. Both men share their perspectives and the details of the difficulty of their private lives.

Matthew McConaughey's character is troubled by his own past does not fit with the rest of the world around him. Harrleson's character is a fairly typical guy trying to work through a troubled marriage. Despite their differences they work well together on the case.

The way it is shot is one half watching two different interviews taking place intermingled with flashbacks of what actually took place as they were working on the case. The story and the pace of the show is just slow enough to get you sucked right in. To me the shows seem like two hours long not that they drag but because there is so much substance to it.

Cohle's over-the-top pessimism is a bit well, over-the-top

I enjoy his pessimism. He's just an all around dark, sad person. He even mentions how when he's around other people, he's not good for them - he "wears them down." I think my favorite quote so far is when he looks around the dilapidated town and says, "This place is like someone's memory of a town, and the memory is fading."

What do you think of the two black detectives? At first I thought that they just wanted a multi-racial cast. Now I'm thinking that it's to give us perspective of time. In the scenes from '95 they use typewriters, Rust's truck looks new and they are an all white group.

Tonight's episode was a little bit harder to follow in time. Woody's hair was noticeably thinning in 2002 but he still had some on top. He also looked thinner in the scene where he met Beth which at the time made me think he was recently divorced, but it's probably to show that since he'd quit drinking he'd lost weight.

Any idea what year it was in the last scene?

SHAFT

It was 2012 in the last scene. It was right after hart left the interview. Rust obviously knew they were interviewing hart and he tailed him.

Here, in McConaughey's own words, are the "Four Stages of Rustin Cohle":

1995 Cohle
"Back to being a part of the body. He's coming off of years being Crash. He's trying to walk the line. Monk-like. Trying to hold it together. And that's a lot easier with less interaction with others. There's a mechanical side to him. He needs the regimen of the homicide detective. He needs the case to actually survive. One, because he's great at it. And two, because it's going to keep him from killing himself."

Crash
"He's our deep, narco wild-ass. A guy who goes all the way. This is where Cohle has all the freedom. He can go over the edge as this guy. And inside, he loves the life of Crash even more, because the shackles are off of him. He knows he may die sooner living this life, but there's a freedom and peace in that knowledge for him."

2002 Cohle
"A little looser mix of Crash and the '95 Cohle. A guy who's made his boundaries clear and has to mark less territory, so he's relaxed into his way in the world. But the case is still his lifeline. He has some small hope that there's going to be a way out of his being and pain and criticism, so he makes an effort into domesticity, a la the girlfriend. Only to prove that he was not made for it, and there is no way out. So what does he do? He resigns to his nature, once again."

2012 Cohle.
"This guy lived longer than he hoped. Fallen prey to his own beliefs. More cynical, angrier, he's had to endure the existence of this shitstorm called life. A little ragged, more rough edges, living in a place where he can manage himself. Not too close. He's not in the CID. But he's not in Alaska. He's a guy who's resigned to his indentured servitude of being alive. But he despises the sentence and the penance. He will not accept defeat. He's not going become a madman, he's not going to kill himself. He wrestles the devil every day, and he realizes that this may last a lot longer than he ever hoped for."

Overall, I thought that last episode was fulfilling, but a bit rushed. I feel like they could have spread out the "information gathering" to include one more episode. Maybe I just want more True Detective, and if it were 9 episodes, I'd bitch about it not being 10 and so on...

The actors are just... off. Colin Farrell (and his mustache) plays an unconvincing Dirty Cop, Rachel McAdams is a poor Tough Woman Cop, and I haven't really seen anything from Gay Mercenary Cop. Vince Vaughn is pretty good, albeit with some weird dialogue, but so far he's the only thing worth watching. The previous season had great framing, mythology, and location, while this is just a by the numbers cop drama.

It was definitely bad writing, the other two get the Expository Girl chained to a fireplace. Way too much angsty dialogue and lengthy cuts. Vaughn's character's walk through the desert, while well done, seemed to take forever.
