I just saw the trailer. How can they remake Robocop as PG-13?

How can you remake Robocop at all? It can't possibly get any better.

You are right on. This new one looks retarded. If it gets incredible reviews I'll go see it.

It can be redone. I was satisfied with Total Recall. I think they fucked this up though.

I'm with Archigeek. Robocop is my favorite movie of all time - it's the ultimate self-parody. Paul Verhoeven is a genius (Showgirls and Starship Troopers notwithstanding.) I didn't see the remake of Total Recall and I won't be seeing the remake of Robocop either.

I think it can be done. I was satisfied with Evil Dead, too. This isn't the director or the project though.

A black (painted) Robocop? Kill me.

Hey now, I loved the book but the first Starship Troopers was a great film in its own right.

1. He's got a flesh hand.
2. He's killed by his car blowing up.
3. No Clarence boddicker.

3 reasons I'm skeptical. Boddicker being the main one.

"Can you flyyy Bobby?"

I did like the first Starship Troopers for sure. Neal Patrick Harris as a pseudo-nazi, but in a good way.

The book WAS awesome... Heinlein is one of my favorite writers. The movie wasn't TERRIBLE, but the acting was. It was just too corny, but not in a "so bad it's good" Road House kinda way, it was just bad acting.

I did really like Gary Busey's kid in it though. He made the whole movie for me.

I thought it was corny by design. Would you like to know more?

Oh yeah, the feel of the movie was very similiar to Robocop, I thought. Dark future self-parody. The newscasts were great. I just think that Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, that black-haired pilot dude who gets his brains sucked out, and the clown who played Johnny Rico collectively sucked. Robocop had great actors in a corny movie, whereas Starship Troopers could been great and corny, but the actors mostly sucked. I still own it on Blu-Ray, and I've watched it probably half a dozen times. I guess I was just expecting more from a Verhoeven movie based on a Heinlein novel. Just my opinion.

"Can you flyyy Bobby?"I think it makes more sense not to have a new Boddicker, the role was so distinctive. A new Robocop isn't hard because the face is covered anyway. They're better off inventing another antagonist that's just as good - whether they can or not is another story.

No. They should bring Kurtwood Smith back as Boddicker. And call Robocop a dumbass.

Recent movie remakes off the top of my head

Red Dawn - Didn't care for it, felt like it tried to be too much action, too fast paced.

The Mechanic - Was okay, after having seen the original with Charles Bronson, which was a much slower paced, realistic movie... I felt this new one was just another movie showing off Jason Statham being a badass. Which is not such a terrible thing anyway.

Total Recall - Sucked. I drifted in and out of sleep for the last 30 minutes of it. Maybe I'm partial to the Mars storyline and aliens in the original. DESE PEEPLE NEED AYUH!

Dredd - I actually liked it. Felt like it was more in character with the source material instead of just a Sylvester Stallone movie where he happens to be playing Judge Dredd.

As for Robocop, it needs Clarence Boddicker, Dick Jones, and Peter Weller's voice. Or there will be...trouble.

Seriously? I think they just need to learn to wait longer.

For example: I am Legend was a perfectly good remake of The Omega Man. I watched them both back to back, which was a hoot. It was like a social studies experiment, comparing the early 70's with the late 2000's. Intriguing. Much more dialogue in the earlier movie, far better special effects in the latter.

Hollywood has been out of original ideas for some time. This looks like some kind of absurd attempt to make us all comfortable with drone use. I'll redbox it a few weeks after it's thrown out of theaters on it's ass.

I thought the same about Spider-man. It's been much longer for Point Break. Gerard Butler in the Patrick Swayze role does not "bodhi" well.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/guides/best_remakes_50_years_50_movies/ Very interesting list. I knew The Departed was a remake, but I didn't know about 12 Monkeys. I doubt Robocop will be any good, but remakes are not necessarily a bad thing (Oceans 11, The Parent Trap). However, the Terminator reboot makes me sad. I'm sure someone can come up with an algorithm to quantify if a remake will be good based on the director, casting, success, # of years since original film, whether or not it was foreign, if it was originally a Shakespeare ripoff anyway, and tomato meter rating of the original.

Adjusted for inflation, a PG-13 today is the R of the 1980s.

That's probably not true.

Nope. Happy to report that the Robocop remake is pretty good. It's well written. Gary Oldman and Abbie Cornish add some detail to the robocop aspect and the actor does a nice job being in a suit.
