ok at about midnight gemstone started to die. not only couldnt you log in the website was down. but thats ok i understand an occasional outage. This is what i do not get nor understand.....

For people that were IN GAME at the time they get a message that said...

Announcement: We are aware that there is some difficulty accessing the game via the SGE. We will do our best to get this fixed ASAP. Our apologies for the inconvenience.

then about an hour later another pops up IN GAME that said...

Announcement: We are experiencing a problem with DNS lookups not resolving www.play.net, as a result if you are booted you likely will be unable to reconnect. Please plan your activities accordingly. We do not currently have an estimate on when the problem will be resolved.

Ok great there is a problem woo hoo thats ok. But why tell people that are in game that they cant get in game from the website or through SGE? Your in game you dont need to log in again. But for the rest of the world who is trying to get on that cant get on at this point your left wondering... whats going on?

Now at the same time Simu has an IRC channel that you can go to and see whats going on the entire time you see a message that says.....

All games at http://www.play.net are up, but the mail server is currently bogged down due to the "sobig" worm. Please practice safe computing, and ensure that your anti-virus software is up-to-date!'

You would think the smart thing to do is update there IRC roomto notate the problem and post the status in there instead of the most obsurd place as IN GAME

Apparently the website is back up now, but i can login under my account for the forums and everything. Hopefully they didn't lose all of the data for our characters. I hope someone has the right mind to backup the system at simutronics at least once a day.

They give the announcement in game, in case you wanted to change characters or what not, I'd bet. That way, you don't log out, and then realize you cannot log back in.

Well just be glad it isn't like about 8-9 years ago, atleast 5 crashes a day. Then again, with GS4 coming out it maybe like that, hell we may all even lose our characters thanks to a major crash.

I doubt it...they back up pretty regularly (more than once a day).

Doubtful, you idiot. If you knew anything about how mass MUD's are run, you would realize how improbable this is.

Did they really?

I was told they were going to stay on schedule no matter what, and if it wasn't on schedule they were going to scrap the whole damn th ing and stick with Gemstone: Broken.

They moved it back to october 11/13 or something because players asked for more testing time on the boards.

I'm sure it wasn't just a few players who wanted the release date moved back.

It was a whole bunch. I mean, do you think they could bug/fix staves and such with only a week or less to test them? People now have an extra month to test stuff/figure out characters.

Wow, great, my birthday present is going to be waking up, logging into Gemstone, and seeing the Wizard FE go "Welcome to Gemstone IV! You are now a level 1 warrior! ENJOY!"

I'm going to have nightmares about that.

lol...that'd be funny, unless it happened to me.

If it happened to me, I'd shotgun everyone at Simu.

[edit: And play tic tac toe with their blood]

a GM at Simucon said that would be a neat april fool's joke to play on people. I told him that wasn't funny. IT'S NOT FUNNY.

p.s. Artha is scary.

*note to self* Limb disrupt 4x. Implode. Maimara. End note.

I'd do that before GS4 Artha, before Sorc's get further ruined and Clerics get more buff.

Artha
08-29-2003, 09:14 AM
I'll have a demon do it in GS4.

Heh, Minor Summoning is non combat. 750...will be released when I become American President.

Artha

Then I'll wait a year (sorcerers are good at keeping grudges), AD a roa'ter, and have it burrow her.

Anything is possible. You DO Know we DON'T live in a perfect world right?

Artha

Alright...it's possible if: Someone kills every backup copy on every server in the Simu Headquarters. Since they're saved around every hour or so, it would have to completely total the HQ.

And if something like that happens, we probably won't be worrying about GSIII anyway.

StrayRogue

*nod Artha* Exactly. It can only be an outside (IE, none internet) interferance that will be able to completely wipe the SIMU servers.

Or if the virus was dormant and when they backed up it was also stored on the backups.

I'm sure they have fairly decent protection.
