I heard he was fired for his WoW addiction.

In all seriousness, if he truly was fired for his beliefs it's shitty. But at some point you have to weigh how much you prefer your job over your beliefs. Shut your mouth while you're playing if you're getting bad vibes, keep your job, and when you retire begin your crusade. Seems easy to me.

This is the reality of it, but I prefer the scenario where a person can say whatever he or she wants to, at any time, in any circumstance, and it doesn't affect their livelihood.

I only skimmed most of that but it sounds like he got fired for whining so much.

Also someone in the comment section claimed his replacement makes 1.2 million dollars less. I have no idea if that's true but if it is I'm sure that has a lot to do with it also.

He was a 32 year old punter whose skills were on the decline. He claims the stats went down because he was asked to kick higher punts to give the coverage units a better chance to make plays since they were struggling. They drafted his replacement who made considerably less and to top it off Kluwe and his position coach didnt get along. Was only a matter of time before something blew up there.

It honestly all sounds like cost cutting to me. They replaced their kicker the year prior as well. Sure, the special teams coordinator was a bigot, but he even said himself the owner of the team didn't mind his advocating.

It'll never happen. Organizations will always have an agenda. Also, for him to think he'd find support in an organization within the nfl, which is quite possibly the most macho sports league in the world, is pure fantasy.

You weigh your beliefs vs your job. His beliefs cost him his job and he's obviously aware of it. This article won't change anything either. Especially with Frazier being fired.

Yeah this is something that happens often in sports but because he was vocal it comes off as a way to shut him up. This shouldn't be a story.

I'm a realist. I fully understand that's not how it works...I was simply saying I would personally like for it to work that way.

Not to bend this thread political, but this is a good topic, imo...I'm a HUGE (capitalized) supporter of the 1st amendment...not just in media and whatnot, but in general life. It is my opinion that words only hurt if you let them...bring on any sob story you want about fat kids getting picked on, or nerds getting picked on, or whatever...and yes I'm waxing a bit drunk right now and I'm gonna ramble...read it or don't...fact is, in elementary school (when kids are undoubtedly the cruelest) I was the fat kid. AND the nerd. I was the fat nerd. AND I was named Donald. Fat+Nerd+Donald is pretty much a perfect storm for getting picked on in elementary school. What did I do? I worked my ass off. Instead of sitting back and going "oh, poor me, everyone is picking on me, boo hoo", I used my size to my advantage. My Sophomore year of High School ('99) I was editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, captain of the chess club, AND on the varsity football team...and that was at Lakeland High School. If you don't know, Nationally-recognized football team. Won 5A state championship that year.

My point is...words don't hurt. In an enlightened society, any member should be allowed to say whatever the hell they want without repercussions. If you don't like what they say, don't listen to them.

He was always an attention getter when with the team. Whether it was his political views, his game playing, his band, whatever. He's always liked the spotlight and having his name out there , even as a punter on an NFL team. Anyway he wasnt happy when his contract wasnt renewed/ resigned at a raise and replaced with a rookie punter on the Vikings. Kind of find it telling that no other team has emplyed him since during the regular season. As with most teams, im sure the Vikings prefer their players , especially non star players , to pretty much shut up and not draw attention to the team or organization especially with controversial subjects, which he liked to do. So it wasnt surprising when they let him go a his salaary rate and replaced him with a cheaper( and better player). At this point it just sounds like sour grapes from him. Possible that his claims are true? Who knows, unless some kind of collaboration comes out. If it is true, it's pretty stupid by officials in an organization(coaches, etc). Knowing his history though, at this point I give his words no weight. Sounds like his usual crusading and attention getting.

Unfortunately businesses seem to believe these days that you're on the fucking clock 24/7 representing them somehow at all times. Some of those buttoned-up nerds could use a real beating. Internet anonymity ftw! I can say and do all sorts of things out in the real world and unless some toolbag is recording me, no one has anything. So.. you would be ok with say.. for example.. a white employee of yours going.. "you know, we really should just kill all black people. It would solve a lot of problems. We never should have given them any rights, it was stupid of us."

You wouldn't fire/reprimand that person in any way shape or form for expressing his beliefs?

It's called a hostile work environment. Will get you sued faster then spilling hot coffee on your lap at McDonalds.

I also love the, "if you don't like what people are saying, don't listen to it" line.

I think it would be kinda hard to ignore someone spouting racially toned rhetoric everyday.

Not to mention.. I wonder what Thond would do if he had an employee that kept saying... "One of these days I am going to bring my AR-15 in here and kill every last one of you."

Freedom of speech right, nothing to worry about. Can't be fired for just saying something.

As for the ar-15 comment, those of us in small town america are chuckling and saying, "try it", when someone says that because obviously 90% of us are armed, even in the workplace. As for the racial comments you illustrated, I've heard those very words more than once. While I'm offended by them, I realize they are just words uttered by ignorant men who were raised by ignorant men and pity them. I don't laugh, I don't scoff. I do my job and go home. I can see how panty-waist city folk would want to pass laws so they don't have to hear it tho, as panty-waists are easily scared and offended to the point of tattling.

Well, I don't think it has anything to do with city folk or small town folk. I have never had to endure it myself, but I would imagine for some people it would be similar to getting unwanted sexual attention in the workplace. Do your "small town folk" think it would be ok to say raunchy things to young women? or pat them on the ass?

The reason why there are laws/rules against it, is because not everyone can handle it the same way. Not to mention the fact that if someone talks about bringing a gun to work and killing everyone.. and the boss does nothing, and then they DO bring a gun to work and try to kill people... well I am sure you know what would happen next.

Ok, just read the article and agree that he got fired for his activism. The NFL is definitely a bigoted work environment. That's why we're still having conversations about "now is the window for the first gay nfl player to come out" and other things like that. If it wasn't a big deal, it wouldn't be a big deal.

Now, with that being said. As a head coach I'd be tempted to shit-can anyone who's off field life starts becoming a story that gets bigger than the team. I don't think it's any coincidence that the Pat's are always such a strong team and that Belichek has them on media lock down. Kluwe is probably the only Punter with a name that I recognize. He did a lot of talking and if you're going to do that you better be so good that it's worth keeping you around. Not only was he advocating for gay rights but then he wore his make shift sticker for that punter to get into the hall.

The NFL is definitely a bigoted work environment. The NFL has a really interesting history with bigotry. They integrated before MLB but only on the field, it took another 60 years to have a black head coach in the championship in 2006 (the NBA managed it in 1968, MLB in 1992). Similar stories for the front office: first black NBA GM was '72, MLB '77, NFL '02, and yet the NFL remains way less white than MLB at 40% to 60%. (The NBA is at 17%.) Then there's the ridiculous quarterback / running back situation.
I'd like to think at least ONE football player in other teams are gay..if not one, more or none...Besides, if slapping ass before games or after a score isn't gay, I don't know what is.One player, one head coach, one owner... if 3% of the population is gay you only need a pool of 23 people to expect at least one gay member.

Aren't gay men generally bad at sports that utilize balls? Ironic, I know. If it's not competitive diving, a gay athlete is just not something the average person may expect. If Joe Montana says he's gay, then I'm surprised. If Greg Lugayness says he's gay, I'm like, "yep. that's about right."

My experience is that gay men are generally wimps. It must go with the territory. Certainly there are exceptions, but overall a gay man is more likely to need defending that to be one that can defend himself. A gay man on a sports team is not likely to be one of the best players.

For a few years, I sold ecstasy (X, beans, etc etc) to supplement my low-wage job. This is a very popular drug with the LGBT community. Being the progressive businessman that I am, I took advantage of that by going to a lot of "gay clubs" to ply my product...I use this only to illustrate that I would be pretty safe in my assumption that I've spent more time around gay dudes than most, if not all, of the other straight dudes on this forum.

In my experience, you're mostly right. However, a lot of times the gay couple is very similar to the hetero couple in that regardless of whether it is two females or two males, there's still usually a "male" and a "female" in the relationship. In lesbian relationships, the "female" is "normal" and the "male" is the bull dike, or butch, or whatever other slang term you prefer. The opposite is true with the male relationships...the "male" is "normal" and the "female" is the limp-wrist, or (insert favorite slang term here).

I've met a ton of gay dudes that I would have no fucking clue that they were gay if they didn't tell me. Hell, one of my best friends is Paul most of the week, and Mistress Divine on the weekends. I didn't find out he was a homosexual cross-dresser until a good year or two into our friendship. Sitting at the bar talking about football and drinking a beer, you wouldn't have even the slightest thought he was anything but a "perfectly normal" divorced father of two.

Similar experience at all the clubs I went to. Sure, probably 75% of them you could just look at them and go either "yep, that's a queer" or "man, she's kinda hot...wait..." but the other 25% were dudes I wouldn't want to fuck with. I would wager the members in that 25% would be the kind that could be in the NFL. I guarantee you that lineman for the Dolphins that all that hub-bub was about a few months ago was gay. No straight man has eyebrows like that.

Also note the word former. I did a lot of stupid things when I was younger, I'm sure we all have, to varying degrees.

Its a pretty safe bet that there are lots of gay men in every male dominated occupations than are willing to admit it. And even in a more open climate there will still always be men who keep it to themselves.

Little late, but in my several years of using ecstasy I never heard it referred to as "beans". Could be a regional thing I guess.

Drug dealers are people too!

What aboot those who violate the laws of the road, uh, maybe on a daily basis, such as speeding, not coming to a complete stop, and failing to utilize a turn signal for every inconsequential lane change or turn?

That's fairly radical, but thankfully I don't do any of those terrible things.

What's the whole business with Aaron Rodgers? He simply said he wasn't gay, right? He decided to get out in front of the rumors and make his preference clear, before lots of people started talking about him being gay? And then people took offense to the fact that he really, really likes women?

I think it's 100% bullshit that people think he's somehow anti-gay because of this. I myself have said before that I am the straightest straight person you'll ever meet. I am emphatic about it. I am also for gay equality, gay marriage, and every other gay right you can think of that they may not have because they're gay. But if you asked me right now if I had ever thought of eating box, I'd crinkle my nose and say "ew", because to me, the idea of ME eating box is disgusting. Does that mean I'm somehow anti-gay? No. And his emphatic asserting that he's straight, doing nothing but clearing the air against a news story, doesn't mean that he is either.

Hey! If a man is really for equal rights for gays then he should be willing to receive some anal loving for his beliefs. None of this half ass "support" bullshit.

More people think he's just gay, not anti-gay. I think he loves chicks with tramp stamps too much for that to be true but he could like dudes on the side.

Which NFL player would you guys be most surprised at being gay?

I'd go with Antonio Cromartie

Current, or retired? Current: Tom Brady. Past: Jeff Garcia

Either I guess. Current probably makes more sense since in general it would probably be less surprising to see a retired player come out than a current one.

Terrel Suggs would surprise me.

thought the Jeff Garcia comment would make it clear I was being facetious. Though, Jeff's always been married to a very, very hot woman. I don't understand.

Pretty sure he couldn't qualify as full on homo what with having like 20 kids from 20 different mommas in 20 different cities.
