View Full Version : Death Pool 2014

I guess we slacked at the end of the year. lists close January 3rd 11:59 est. If someone on your list dies between now and then, you'd better have a list post time stamp that is prior to the death.

1) Each participant must list a 10 person 'active roster' of people you think will die in 2014. Entrants must be semi-well known individuals.
2) When they die - you get 100 points minus their age.
3) Bonus points - claim 10 extra points if you are the only person who has the dead guy on their list.
4) Double Points for dead guys in December 2014 (double the age points, not the 10 solo points). This will make the game interesting with come-from-behind possibilities!
5) Double Points if you have two entries that pass on the same calendar date. The date in the time zone where the death occurred will be the determinant factor.
6) Taxi squad - list an extra two people for your 'taxi squad.' - If someone on your list dies, you can move a member of your taxi squad to your active roster. You only get points for your active roster. If someone on your taxi squad dies, too bad.
7) Deadline - rosters must be dated or last edited by Jan 3, 2014. You can update your roster as many times as you like before Jan 3, 2014. Any late entries must be made in whole (no trickling in your squad), and will place you on a 1 week no point probation period followed by a three week half point probation period.
8) Scoring - keep your own score. If someone on your list dies, claim the points with a post in this thread, make your taxi squad move at the time of the points claim.
9) Executions - No one who dies due to the sentence of a court will qualify. Assassinations still count though

Deadspin confused me with a recent "The Ultimate Warrior is not dead" repost. Not your fault.

TMZ reports that according to officials, Hellwig collapsed outside of a hotel in Arizona while walking with his wife Tuesday night. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. In a 2013 interview, Hellwig said that he and his wife live in New Mexico but travel to Arizona frequently. Recently, we republished the Masked Man's Dead Wrestler of the Week essay from 2010 on the rumored death of the Ultimate Warrior back in 1991.

Wow. I saw his HoF speech the other night and at one point he was talking about people cracking on him for blowing up early in his matches. He said it was true and that he was even blown up now. I know it can be hot on stage under all the lights and whatnot, but I did notice he seemed a bit red in the face and was the only one I noticed up there sweating; definitely thought he looked a little rough. Suppose this could explain why.

I used to be big into wrestling when I was a kid...growing up a redneck it's pretty much par for the course....of course, this was during the time of Iron Sheik, Hacksaw, etc. etc...I've been out of the loop for a long time, but correct me if I'm wrong...Undertaker never lost at Wrestlemania, right? For like 20-something years straight? And his last match was his first loss at Wrestlemania?

That is kinda fucked up. I bet they paid him a boat load though.

Watching the slack-jawed, bug-eyed people after the loss was fucking great. Always awesome when an arena at an event like that goes silent. Right up there with watching people's reactions to the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones.

It was his idea, so I wouldn't sweat it. He may not be done, but it's certainly possible. At this point he's pretty much only wrestling one match a year anyway and now that the streak is over... I guess all that might be 'left' would be for him to go out with a win next year over Brock.

For like 20-something years straight? And his last match was his first loss at Wrestlemania?

That is kinda fucked up. I bet they paid him a boat load though.

I haven't kept up with wrestling in years either. A couple years after Vince bought WCW & ECW it mostly turned to shit, especially once the attitude era ended and they went to this PG-13 shit.

Undertaker was 21-0 until the other day. It was Undertaker wanting to end the streak though. Supposedly he wanted to do it a few years ago but Vince wouldn't go for it yet.

Either way, if he wanted to keep his streak, Vince wouldn't have stopped him. He pretty much gets free reign over how his matches go, he's the "general" backstage, etc. The thing people are in such an uproar about still is why they picked Brock to do it. He's a part timer and doesn't really give much of a shit about the business. You could tell watching the match that Undertaker's time had come though. Mick Foley tried to convince him to retire at 20-0, but he wanted to keep going a little longer, I guess until he physically couldn't do it anymore. Either that, or Paul Bearer's death last year was his trigger to finally hang it up. Why he wanted to end his streak in the first place is beyond me. That said, I don't think anyone is really going to count his match with Brock as a loss, regardless of what the results of the match say.

Would have much rather seen him either give it to Triple H or have Shawn Michaels come back for one more match, or give it to one of the younger guys and pass the torch, like how Andre did with Hogan and Hogan did with Warrior. Undertaker has always talked about doing what's best for the business and not for himself, something most wrestlers, like Brock, don't do. Which makes it even more wtf as to why Brock was picked to do it.

Sad to see him go either way, him and Warrior were always my favorites.

And then to have a Warrior die 2 days later...it's a sad week for wrestling. I'm just glad I was there to see them both off.

Supposedly Taker got his bell rung early and basically didn't know what the fuck was going on and had to rely on Brock to carry the match. There's a reason they put Heyman with Lesnar... he's not too bright. He also apparently isn't the guy you want calling a match.

That said, Taker is ancient and definitely heading into Ric Flair territory where you wonder why he's still doing it- and allowed to-, though at least in Flair's case you know he kept at it because he blew all his money.

I read that Taker chose Brock to end the streak because Brock was a "real" fighter, and it would save Taker some face losing to someone who had proven their mettle in a "real" sport (MMA).

Apparently he wanted to lose to Brock 3 or 4 years ago, but UFC wouldn't let Brock wrestle the match, FWIW.

I'm not a religious man. Was raised Episcopal. Studied eastern religion. I think it all stems from humans not knowing the future and trying to find ways to predict it. That being said I think the first religion is the most true. Hinduism from the Indus Vally gave birth to all modern religions. And it is very internal. Very self supportive. Granted there were great fables of mythical heros and grand deities... but the concept of Karma is completely individual.

That's why I don't predict other people's deaths.

Pretty much. Traditionally F1 is and has been the product of rich kids who get trained up from an early age and buy their way on with family money/corporate dough. This was like Ricky Bobby running the "Me" car in Talladega Nights, designing and building it himself, and winning the championship. Over time he had to pick up sponsors and help to afford parts/equipment maintenance/testing and perform it but it remains awesome.
