Nieninque

Some American Bloke on a burger king advert pronounced Jalapenos hal-a-pin-ios
rather than Jal-A-Pee-Nose

Is that how you say it on the wrong side of the pond?

We'll probably get as many pronounciations as you get people to post in this topic. Darn Spanish words with too many letters!

since the J is pronounced as an H in spanish, and the word is spanish, it is correct to pronounce the word Ha-la-pain-yo

Why does everyone say "pain"? That makes it sound like a redneck saying it.

I've always here... Hal-uh-pen-yo with the n and y being said practically together.

Not all of us are totally uncultured midwesterners, they pick the worst actors for those things anyway, their on a budget.

In Spanish, the vowel "e" is pronouned as a long "a", Makkah. Also, if I remember correctly, the "n" has a tilde above it, changing it's pronunciation to "nyuh" (that's the closest I can come, phonetically).

Six years of Spanish, and that's pretty much what I remember.

All-ah-pain-yo. Thats how the mexicans pronounce it with the “H” sounding “J”.

I love them. Such great flavor. If you like jalapeños, try habañeros. Hot as hell but with a subtle smoky flavor. Oh, and we pronounce them Ab-an-yeros.

[edited for a missing tilde]

Speaking of cultural differences, it gives me the giggles when Nieninque uses words like "bloke" and "wanker."

I love the word "wanker". Somehow, it just fits perfectly!

Not only that, but in mexican-spanish, the s at the end is pronounced the same way we pronounce it here in the states - and the j at the beginning is pronounced with a "hard H" - almost with a hint of the sound of clearing your throat.

In Castillian spanish (the spanish you hear commonly in Spain), the h is more like the "soft h" you hear in English, and the s is pronounced with a lisp.

And yeah - the e in jalapenos is prounced more like an "ay" than an "ee", and the n has a tilde which means it's pronounced like "nyuh".

Hrmph. Silly lily-white middle-americans who have never had any exposure to any of the MILLIONS of spanish-speaking people in our own country...hrmph and double hrmph!

-The lily white yankee who sat next to a Cuban in high school Spanish class

edited to add:

Oh by the way - it's MUTZ-ah-Rel, not "matza-rel-luh." And TRILL that R, you silly people! And in "cavatelli", when referring to the plural, the c is more like a g, the t is more like a d, and the i is silent. At least, if you're from northern italian peasant stock. And the first a is Ahhh..as in "open your mouth and say ahhh" not aaa as in apple.

I don't like the habaneros. They don't provide the kind of flavor that jalepenos do, all those fuckers do is BURN.

Edited to add: jalepeno chili cheeseburgers...better than sex.
