Never got around to picking this game up on Steam til now.
How bad is this going to ruin my life?

Pretty bad. It's a great immersive game. Expect to lose a few nights of sleep, at least. :)

The regular game is fricken awesome. Like most of the previous ones it's very easy to get sucked down random side story lines.
See you in a couple months or so.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/ Mods are a necessity! Check them out. There is another thread on here that I started where people list their mods.

Absolutely agreed on the mods. They can make a huge difference in how you experience and enjoy the game. At the very least, pick up SkyUI to make your user interface easier to work with, since the existing one is a headache to work with. It also includes a mod configuration menu (MCM) which lots of other mods use to let you tweak their settings while still in game. Also pick up the unofficial patches to fix a slew of bugs you didn't know existed.
Beyond that, it really depends on what you're looking for in the game. I can give you a ton of recommendations on improving your immersive experience, but the mod community is so vast that you can probably find something for just about any taste. You could change the visuals or sound, add in new NPCs or mechanics, tweak how your character advances in levels, even install entire DLC-scale new lands.
If you're going to install any mods, you'll want to use the Nexus Mod Manager (NMM), which makes installing or removing the mods much easier. Here's a tutorial on it from a modder who's really good at explaining things like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClqtmSUsFhg He's also done a few videos called "Beginner's Guide to Modding Skyrim," which I highly recommend if you're interested in mods. Start here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxQ1JN_X-_Y
Here's the thread here that Gelston mentioned where we discuss the mods we've been using. I've updated what I've been using since this, so feel free to ask if you have any questions. http://forum.gsplayers.com/showthread.php?76939-Skyrim-Mods

Make sure you have the Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) (http://skse.silverlock.org/) installed before you use SkyUI. You'll also need it for the bigger/more intrusive mods.

This is the problem with kids these days. In my day, the only "modding" we did was blowing in NES cartridges, and we were THANKFUL FOR IT!

Looking back on my younger days I now wonder if that actually did anything or was it just a case of...what's that logical fallacy? Because B happened after A that must mean A caused B?

Breath contains moisture, so the dusty contacts were better able to make a circuit. Breath also contains a lot of other stuff, though, so the smart thing to do is use a Q-tip and Windex.
Post hoc ergo propter hoc. This is why logic and science are not great pals.

I like how everyone figured out to blow on the cartridge even though no one had the internet. We all just sorta figured it out independently.

"So, dear readers, all signs point to no: blowing in the cartridge did not help. My money is on the blowing thing being a pure placebo, offering the user just another chance at getting a good connection. The problems with Nintendo's connector system are well-documented, and most of them are mechanical -- they just wore out faster than expected."

I've played Morrwind, Oblivion and Skyrim and each game for some reason I get really into for like 20 hours then just suddenly become bored and quit playing. Six or so months later I'll get really into the game again and the same thing happens, about 20 hours later I get bored and quit playing. This cycle usually continues until the next game comes out.
One of these days I'll beat one of these games...maybe...
I wonder if it's because I have too much electronic entertainment at my disposal these days. When I was younger my parents only bought me a new game like once every 3 or 4 months so I kind of had to keep playing the game until I finished it. Now I have streaming video, DVR, Xbox, Playstation, I can download just about any game I want at any given time. Heck I must have 70 games on Steam and 75% of them I haven't finished yet, some I haven't even played yet.
Someone please help me, I have an addiction :(

I completed the game once. I tried to do it again on a different kind of toon, didn't make it past Whiterun.
First play through was on an impact mage (fireballs shortly stun mobs), then I tried a two handed warrior type....couldn't stand it. I hit one mission where you go werewolf and can't do anything else, died, and lost the werewolfness, and I quit.

I get bored with the linear quests and no moral choice things. The game is really fun and I sunk a ton of time into it, but you can't go through again and make the bad decisions, or let someone die, or whatever. No fun moral choices, no killing certain characters. Boo.

70 games on Steam is the equivalent of smoking pot but not inhaling. I think I have 70 games installed right now, and I bought 3 just today (damn 75% off sales... Steam knows my weaknesses).

Yeah they really messed up magic in Skyrim. Everything else is 'use a skill, it gets more powerful', while magic is 'use a skill, it gets less expensive'. Spellmaking was gutted too, so you can't make awesome spells like you could in Morrowind. Fortunately mods can go a long way to fixing that.

Tell me about it. So tempted to buy The Bureau but I can't convince myself to buy another game when I have so many to go through.
Must get through this backlog! Darn first world problems!

I tend to go a similar route. I think I end up playing the shit out of'em cause they're pretty awesome and then I burn out and need a break. By the time I get back to a game, I have little idea what the hell I was doing, where I was going, etc so I end up not really caring much and end up doing a random quest or two and quitting.

I own 173 games, 70 installed, and beat maybe 5 of them. Barely play most.
But... how can you turn down 75-80% off sales... and Humblebundles.

Yeah the sales make me impulsive.
On TES series, I did play Morrowind, but the game was SO open ended that I ended up stealing something I needed much later for a quest and I have no idea where I put it after many hours played, so I ended up quitting. Oblivion I did much better and finished a few times with different character types. Skyrim I put a lot of time into but never finished the main questline then I got bored of it and haven't gone back yet.
I really enjoy the story and setting of the TES games, but I can never shake the feeling that first person melee combat is way too clunky.

I've only played an hour or so of bioshock, half life 2, crysis, and fallout 3. I think the thought of knowing that those games are still available to me is better than actually playing them. Some day I suppose...
