Over the past five seasons, the NBA has gone 109,490 for 143,998 from the stripe at home and 103,513 for 136,200 on the road. This works out to the following percentages:
76.04% ± 0.23%
76.00% ± 0.23%
So, no. It's certainly easier to get free throws (to the tune of about 0.66 FTAs per game), so lay into the referees all you want, but the waving and shouting is just hastening the heat death of the universe.

Aw!
That "broader public" preference worries me. Do you think I could cite the PC? "Well it's the unofficial forums of an MMO. How popular is it? Well, does Finalist for the 1998 AIAS Online Game of the Year mean anything to you??? ...can I have a glass of water? I think I hurt my throat with all those spoken italics."
