Package delivery in 30 minutes or less via drone.

So if I shoot the drone down, do I get to keep the package?

I get two day for free with my prime. I'd be ordering packages all day long with this. There'd be a steady stream of drones to my house.

This is not possible. I have friends that work at the local Amazon warehouse. At the speed that drone flew.. they would have to have a fully stocked warehouse every 15-20 miles. Hell, I live 20 minutes away by car, no way would it get to me in 30 min.
I can't even imagining them having enough facilities to support this in 4-5 years. Not to mention the sheer number of drone "pilots" they would have to staff. I'd say 5,000 minimum.

the idea would be they would service a 5 mile area, ie urban areas like LA or NYC not for the average customer

It's within a 10 mile radius of a warehouse. Not available for most customers.

Didn't notice the 10 mile thing. That would limit it in my area to likely.. maybe 2000 people or so. They built the warehouse in an industrial park.

They said the drones wouldn't require pilots once the FAA passes new laws in 2015 or whatever. I would imagine they would combine this service with "Amazon Instant" which was to provide local pickups in more areas.

In that case you might as well just go and pick it up yourself, but that would remove the entire point of Amazon... avoiding human interaction at all costs.

Or even better, hackers could make them drop items on people or cause deliveries of items to wrong address. Or bring the drones down in traffic.

There were bags of dirt for sale on Amazon this spring with prime shipping. They were $1 cheaper per bag than Home Depot and no sales tax. I ordered like 30 bags or something ridiculous. If $75 covers that...

You're all missing the point. Drone killing package thieves will become the new rage. You forget that before the end of Obama's second term all guns will be confiscated from private citizens, and anyone with the arm to take down a drone with a knife may as well play pro ball instead (although of course American football will also be illegal by then, Leader be praised!).

We can hunt drones in Colorado. I wonder if you get the keep the contents of the package when you shoot down an Amazon Drone. Maybe you only keep half of it and the state gets the other half.

LOL 5000 pilots. You think each one of these would be controlled by a human pilot? With GPS being accurate to within a few feet, you think they'd have a person behind a computer screen navigating? Here's a simple idea: have drone fly up to x feet, fly to coordinates, return. All they'd need is to work out a simple sensor program for when contact is made with the ground and to avoid other objects. I have not interacted with you in a while and had almost forgotten that you're a fucking idiot.

Yeah, too easy. I do hope that when people start shooting them down, that then they escalate and weaponize. Also, do you think it would cost more to have it shipped using a flight path that avoids the ghetto?

You'd probably have to hire 5000 drone pilots for that service. Minimum. And to be safe, they'd need to be trained in aerial evasive maneuvers. They'd need to hire only experienced war time drone pilots.

The burning question is this: What is the minimum dollar amount to get drone delivery? I hope it's low enough that we can afford to hunt them every weekend.

Isn't it weird how much easier it is to make robots that fly than robots that walk? Makes you wonder why we evolved to plod around on our big dumb feet when we could have evolved jet propulsion instead. Way to drop the ball, Darwin.

It's not that we can't, we just can't YET. If we don't ban these drones then we'll never evolve self-jet propulsion.

It's an interesting question, would you rather be called the name that derives from "slave" or the name that derives from "man"? Think of how many humans are disgusted by humans, it's plausible a self-aware robot would prefer the slave name. Machine from means, synthetic from made.
In any event, it would give me a chance to try out my "eat three laws' worth of dicks" retort.

You haven't even begun to consider the ease of which we could watch everyone all day long, universally, with these flying drones. We're right there, Latrin. Your dream realized.
