One thing that always annoyed me about Klaive's boards was that a lot of people were afraid to post, afraid to say their opinion because they didn't want to be attacked by everyone on there, including the rather corrupt staff. This always annoyed me greatly because it's wrong for people to feel that way.

But today I really saw that it's not just Klaive's boards that do that. As Jenisi said and others have said and I have thought, here more and more I don't want to say my opinion because no matter what it is someone who doesn't even know you decides to attack you. And then it becomes a huge deal because everyone who wasn't involved needs to jump in and also say how wrong and stupid you are.

Isn't this a reason we all hated SR? An opinion is what someone has and if they're not attacking you with it, if they're simply stating it who are you to say that they're wrong and you're right? You can be for Bush or for Kerry and it doesn't make you wrong and give someone else the right to attack you. What is wrong with people that they can't simply respect your right to have your own opinion and instead they have to attack you and make you think "Might as well not even post"

And before people start the nice crying smilies and the violin smilie, honestly think about it.

The difference is, there, it's the person running the boards deleting posts etc when someone says something they don't like. Here, if someone doesn't like w hat you post, they say so.

You're not being run out of town, you're in no danger of being banned. Thus your simile is weak.

I'm registerd on the SR boards, but I rarely post if at all. One of the biggest detractors of why I dont post there is because when I neglected to set up my privacy settings on my AIM he kept spamming me with links to posts on his boards. That just rubbed me the wrong way so I decline to participate.

The reason I did not (and don't) like the SR is not because people have disagreements and arguments. That happens here. That will happen everywhere there are people.

The problem with the SR was that what you said could be changed at the whim of the Admin(s), deleted at the whim of the Admin(s), or garbled at the whim of the Admin(s). Personally, I believe that is still true.

Here, people disagree. Some disagree vehemently. Others disagree mildly. Still others disagree just to be disagreeable. Oddly enough, the same is true in the real world. ;)

Yeah the issue at SR wasn't that people were afraid to talk as they would get attacked. It was because their opinion may not be there later or edited to something different. Who wants to belong to a place where your opinion is not allowed? Big difference.

Here, however, if someone doesn't like what you have to say, they just say it. The opinion will stick.

I wil say that since I left staff I've been a tad more honest in my replies. Darn tootin'. I was tired of being neutral and nice and holding back how I really felt about things (a concept that other admins don't grasp, and I don't mean Kranar). I'm not going to apologize for it either. I'm not going to be all sweet and nice to something that I don't agree with anymore. After a certain point of hearing the same song and dance of "no one understands me"... ugh... :talktohand:

See the difference? One is an attack, one is disagreeing. Hell go look at Jenisi's post where she tried to say her opinion and was attacked for it and rather than someone going "You shouldn't have attacked her" she got sarcastic replies that attack her again when she didn't even do anything.

Also there's other thing, thank you for reminding me. People just focus on what they want to see and you can keep posting and say "No that's not what I was saying, this is what I was saying" and they'll ignore that post quite nicely and just keep attacking you for something you didn't even mean. And they tell you to stop and yet they keep going with attacking you.

Leloo, there are those who will disagree in a polite manner and there are those who won't. Like I said, some people disagree just to be disagreeable. Some who truly do disagree don't bother to paint roses around what they have to say. That's just how things are, on the boards and out in the big, bad world.

If one wears one's heart on one's sleeve, one is going to end up getting it broken. People are not always going to be nice, and all the talking in the world isn't going to change that. If you really can't stand the way somebody posts, or reacts to the posts of others, ignore that poster. Believe me, there are some posts I read for content only, and that's just because I HAVE to. ;)

Leloo, I sometimes can see how and where you would get that impression. But while these boards are laid back on some issues, they certainly could be a lot worse. Also, I think a great deal of people learn to take the insults and attacks with a big grain of salt. The "who do you hate" thread was a great example of this. Most of the people who replied mentioned that OOG they really don't hate anyone. They may disagree or become angry with but it doesn't mean they are looking to make that person feel like crap for the hell of it.

The difference between a discussion board and a verbal discussion is that you can literally dissect everything everyone says on a discussion board and pull everything apart, or ignore the bits you dont want. You can do that in a verbal discussion (see any politician) but it's not as easily done.

I only posted to the SR boards twice. My post was altered the first time I posted to change what I said completely.

I dont like the official boards because you have to seriously toe the line of what they decide are the things that you can and cant talk about.

Here is pretty much as close to free speech as you could possibly get on a moderated board.

Along with that though, people do use that freedom to behave badly and attack people. Others dont. Sometimes people see a challenge of an opinion as an attack on themselves. It isnt always the way.

At the end of the day it is a mismatch of a bunch of people from around the world that have a range of ideas and experiences, mostly who are never going to change their opinions about anything they post about. If you see it like that and an opportunity to have a laugh and a bit of a row, it becomes less hurtful when people across the world tell you to STFU because they know best.

Umm, Klaive...do I not remember correctly that when you started the SR it was to be a virtual anarchy? There were to be no rules. Everyone could post whatever they wished. There would be no editing. There would be no deleting. Freedom would reign. That isn't exactly how things turned out, is it?

You say you only want "pleasant" people who will not say bad things about your staff and posters. Yet, when I visited your boards, some of the worst things said about your posters (and your staff, at times) was said by the staff members and Admins. I find that very...interesting. :)

That was because Spun different people kept coming on and attacking me for basically no reason but they wanted to ignore the fact that I had not started that conversation and was defending myself from people who barely know me assuming shit about me.

Now... Psykos took this off topic so fast BUT Klaive made me immediatly regret ever comparing PC to SR with the complete line of bullshit about how SR is a pleasant environment. I compared PC to it but I didn't mean for it to say that PC is as bad. SR is like the ultimate epitome of bullshit. And as someone else said, it's only a handful of PC posters who are being even marginally like SR. But what some people said did make sense, if these people want to be so hurtful then forget it. The hard part is that sometimes it's only these negative people who speak up and the good people just don't waste their time so the person who is the center of it gets to feel like it's everyone.

Rules for interacting on message boards:

1) You don't always have to get the last word. Learn when to drop a subject.

2) You don't always have to respond to a specific comment. Some are just so wrong that to even acknowledge them is moronic.

3) You don't always have to respond to specific people. Some are just so stupid and/or ignorant that the time wasted to even acknowledge them could be better spent by hammering a nail into your brain.

4) Nothing said on a message board is worth getting upset over. The majority of posters on any board are people who should mean almost nothing to you. Their opinions, their thoughts are insignificant. Trivial. Meaningless. Worry about the people who are close to you, whom you love and respect. Everyone else can go fuck themselves.

5) Once you learn #4, numbers 1-3 suddenly become much easier.

maybe it's just me, but I kind of took from Spun's post that she's basically telling Leloo she should shut up, and considering this is a forum board..I don't understand that. I mean, yeah I'm not the one who would normally defend Leloo however, I think she has just as much right to post her thoughts as anyone else.

As far as the topic at hand, Loo..read above. This is a public forum board and people have a right to their opinions just like you do. Unfortunately, it can seem to someone that everyone is picking on them at times, but to be honest, noone is forcing anyone to read or post here and although I'm sure they would love to keep you as a poster-- if you can't handle the thoughts, opinions of others, just as you ask them to handle your own, then you probably shouldn't post. Take a break maybe to clear your mind, for your own stress level to reduce. Just some thoughts.

It wasn't that they were expressing different opinions. I believe anyone can express their opinion and they should but a lot of people can't just state their own, they attack you and tell you to STFU cause it's such a great phrase and basically put you down. Where's the need to do that? I mean, everyone wants to be an adult and adults should be able to discuss things without verbally attacking other people and triyng to put their opinions down because they disagree.

Isn't it smart to rather hear the other persons side and maybe learn something rather than immediatly dismissing and attacking it?

To you and I it may be smart, however for others it is not. Part of the issue here is that you expect everyone else to live up to the high standards you set for yourself in your existence. Not everyone else will do that and it's just part of life that you either accept it, or you live your life mulling over it. Your choice really.

Leloo, I think we get the point and we do understand what you are saying. Thing is not everyone that posts here are adults. That's just a fact. So you can't always expect adult like responses. Then on the other hand there are non adults who post more maturely than the adult ones. When posting on a board you shouldn't wear your heart on your sleeve. Sometimes you must just learn to ignore certain responses, simple as that. Yes, sometimes it is hard, but only if you make it that way.

Thing is people feel more brave when they post on the internet. They say things they normally would not say when face to face with that person. Have to take this into account as well.

Leloo, you need to re-read Raven's rules. Learn when to drop something.

What you did in Magelyn's thread was unwelcome and annoying, in MY opinion (and I do believe that to be a shared opinion). You basically said you didn't think he should be discussing something so private and personal there. Fine.

Other people disagreed with you. Fine.

The problem comes when you refuse to drop the discussion and turn the thread into a "poor me" bid for attention. When you say things like, "only two people know what I'm talking about," that's a cry for attention.

You might not like the way he chose to vent about his relationship, and that's fine. I think some of the threads you start are stupid, but I just pass them by - I don't feel the need to butt in and say you don't need to discuss that here, and get into a big argument about whether or not my opinion is valid and what the reasoning is behind it.

You also said that the entire discussion could have been taken to IMs, but you perpetuated it just as much as anyone else did. Just learn when to drop it, because after awhile no one cares what you're saying and they're going to tell you to STFU just because it's annoying.

Sometimes I read and post. Sometimes I read and want to post. Other times, I read and just want to slap folks, so I don't post.

It is a public forum on the internet with alot of free speech. It is also a place to get involved in drama, or create yet more drama.
Some posters show good manners. Some show no manners. Some show intelligence, others well..... they show lack of creativity.
In my opinion, alot of things directly affect the words we use when posting. What's going on in our real life, how many im's are going, how many things we are trying to do at once.
An then other times it's just a way to be a part of or start a flame war.

Then other times, it is simply because someone else comes along after the topic has slowed down and adds in 2 more cents that everyone feels the need to reply to again, possibly bringing uppoints already beat to death :::looks around for the dead horse smilie:::

Other's simply use it as a means to confuse all of those reading it by switching topics, bashing forums etc.

So there's my 2 cents.
