View Full Version : Gemstone cliques

So being mostly a lurker, I've noticed that the major web spots where I get my GS information tend to show signs of heavy cliqueyness (sp?) --you know what I mean.
1. The Simu boards
2. www.gs4.org
3. this board
with the slight exception of www.gs4.org, whose board is the most sparse of the 3, the folk who post on Simu and here tend to be the same different group of people.
Is this board a sort of defected province?
Is there any friction between the clique that posts here, and the regulars on the Simu boards?
If yes, does that friction extend into Elanthia?
If you look at this board a lot, you'd know I have a warrior, and I totally think some regular warrior folder posters like Dredroberts, Wulfhen, and that arrogant weiner Psycat are totally suffering from my-ego-blew-out-my-ass-itis, but I deliberate whether my view of them as arrogant board posters should affect my view of them in-game.
But then,
the really sickening part of the Simu boards is that the posters kinda have to "RP" their posts too.
Ohh, just thinking about it makes me want to hurl a 10 course meal.
OK, rant done.
For defected province, see unmentioned board. We're basically good people with the exception of the Red Sox fans.

What?
I do not associate with any of these people.

No, I could care less about other boards, actually. I wouldn't even say there's a clique here.
This coming from a guy that had red bangs.
I wouldn't say this is a "defected province" or whatever. Some people post on the official boards and here at the same time (like me).
I look to the Simu-Boards when I want more of an official answer. I look here when I want opinions and a "kick back and drink a beer" type attitude.

I guess you could say I'm in the PC clique.
Oh, except the part where I'm good friends with a whole two people here and I knew them before I posted here.

Any group of people that interact regularly can seem cliqueish. I don't really think its anything special with GS boards.
People here rally very well against things/people they don't like as smaller groups that tend to be vocal but as a collective I don't think we agree on any damn thing.

Theres some very definate board-hounds on the officials. Some very definate people who think their shit smells better than everyone elses. Psycat, Celtar, Turinrond, a few others. I don't think its a clique in its rawest sense, though.
I'm not a member of the PC "clique", the Simu board clique is more of a good old boys club when it comes down to it. I'm not a member of that either.
The PC "clique" mostly uses PSInet, I'd say about 90% of the regular posters on here use the OOC channel on PSInet, whereas most of the Simu board regulars, I've never seen any of them on there.
There are only a couple people here I see post of the officials a lot, Nakiro and Arkans, maybe a few others. I post nearly as much on the officials as I do on here but I keep my characters under wrap on the officials because I don't like peole having any preconceived notions about them.
But I think it's just human nature that people who are friends stick together, back when Players' Corner was on whee.org I knew most of the people who posted then in game, I think that's pretty normal, especially when these boards were smaller.

I think these boards are popular for your ability to say shit, piss, fuck, whatever.
Whereas if you post on the official boards, Quabu or some other Host with nothing better to do will pull your post.
To answer your questions, no and no.

If I knew how to post on the official boards, I might.
Anyways, there are a few 'cliques' within the PC, and I'm sure there are some within the official boards too (I don't read or post there, so I dunno.) However, from what I have read there, people are pretty full of themselves, and it pisses me off that I can't just tell them to stfu.

I know people that only post on Simu and they know I pretty much only post here. We disagree on alot of things. It doesn't cross into the game. We are bigger than that.
People that aren't bigger than that aren't worth knowing.
It's just two different tones. Depending on what you like, you'll post on the respective boards. Want fucking losers? Head on over to www.klaive.net.

I didn't want to believe there was a clique here, but then I saw it in action. :( However, I have yet to see the clique machinate against an unoffensive poster.
The PsiNet observation is legit. I sometimes have to catch myself from referring to people on PsiNet by their PC handles.

I can count the ingame interactions on one hand with the posters of this board
1. katana delivery
2. character/ equipment transfer
3. gave gift of whip
4. gave gift of amulet
5. kill klaive
I am sure if the Fallen is ever released then the members here would interact a lot more

I still don't see a clique here; although, this is not the first time I've heard people refer to one. Can somebody please enlighten me?
The only clique I know of on the official boards is made up of the people who have been playing forever and attend all the SimuCons. I think they stick together because they have met in the real world.

I think there are cliques here (rather than just one) but it tends to be like sibling interaction in a lot of ways.
If someone stupid starts on one or more of the posters, the boards tend to unite in slamming them into the ground (see Carolie, Psykos, Solescape, Stanley of old to name a few). When that dies down, it tends to get back to the usual bickering of infighting, with smaller cliques.
Much the same as any established group of people that BS a lot

I think of a clique as a group of people who band together to exclude another person, or several people. I don't see that here, really. There are those who think alike and tend to agree on most subjects, but I don't see that as a clique. I see that as life. There will be those who agree with one's views and those who do not.
Now, if someone comes to post here and causes nothing but trouble, they're going to find themselves up to their ass in alligators. However, it will not be a clique. It will be the majority of our posters. Has been in every case I can remember... ;)

I see the cliqueyness in terms of the people who will back up their friends no matter what.
Like people who, in the middle of a serious discussion (rather than gemstone related or just silly discussion) posting something like "U R retarded" with no argument and friends of theirs posting stuff like "Way to get to the point, XXXXXXXXX" and other sycophantic stuff like that, without challenging the Point of view or even adding to the discussion in any way other than the mutual masturbation of each other's egos.

I don't see any cliques here for one and only one reason.
I can disagree and flame the shit out of a person's line of thought in one post, and cheer and agree with them in another.
See Hulkein, Tamral, and Park.
That's the beauty of these boards to me, no one really has an ass to kiss here so we're all pretty honest with what is on our minds at any given time to the chagrin of other members and back again.
It's a ball that goes back and forth over a bazillion and one lines.

I don't see that where I'm sitting. One of my favorite people here is talk with is Tsa'ah. I'll back him up if I agree with his stance. Sometimes I don't. We don't see eye to eye with religious and political things at all and I don't agree just because we're friends.
Chock those people you're referring to as the ones who don't have a mind of their own and just agree with the popular vote to stay popular. That's not a clique, that's just human nature.

CT is right, as usual. People who come to these boards and start bashing others from the get-go are probably going to catch hell from the other posters. There are some people who are bashed pretty regularly on these boards. That's because they came here and created their own hell. If a new poster lucks out and picks one of those, he/she will probably be cheered. However, if that new poster starts bashing on somebody known to others here, or causes problems with others then blames those others, or somebody else, they're not going to fare very well.

I kind of mentioned the "slay the arseholes" reaction as being a break from the cliques rather than an example of them. I certainly wasnt saying there was anything wrong in it.
I dislike the routine little cliques that develop when things are more settled, although I also do not mean that everyone is in a little clique or even that those that are in the cliques are unable to agree with people that arent.
I do believe that there are cliques here and that, to a certain extent, people are excluded/marginalised outside of those cliques.
No biggie, its an internet discussion board...but as the question was asked...

I don't post on the official boards for 2 reasons:
1) I was locked out about 6 years ago for using the term "Anal" (as in "Stop being so anal") and haven't been back really since. 3 posts during that time period.. basically telling Simutronics how they fucked up.
2) If I returned now, I would probably be banned.

If you consider friends backing each other up as cliques, so be it. I've always considered cliques to be a group of people banding together in pursuit of a goal and excluding others to get there. Doing that on a message board where you gain nothing from it doesn't make any sense to me (except for certain people elsewhere who think it makes them important in their own little world  ). Then again maybe that's why I don't see them here as you do.

Because you think I want to be special on the boards? Please.
I have nothing against people backing up friends. Most of the discussions here for instance are about BSing with friends and others about nothng in particular.
The cliqueyness I see is in people clucking about how some people are so great when they post their logs of them pwning someone, which, if it was someone else, they would slam for various reasons (Once again I say that it is not everyone that does this, just some).
Another instance is a discussion that ended up being between me and Spun about adoption. I felt it was an interesting discussion with two very different opinions about an issue.
Maimara pipes in "you are a retard" or something else profound (whatever, thats how she is) then queen of cliques - HouseofElves pipes in "Way to get to the point, Beth" when she had (a) not even taking any part in the discussion apart to flame and, (b) not even attempted to get to the point.
That is just an example. There are other occasions of cliques. That one springs to mind.
Had it been Jesae or someone like that, or even someone that Jacina's player gets on with in the game, there would have been no such comment.
She wasnt challenging my point of view, she was jumping in becuase someone from her little clique was discussing something with someone outwith her little clique.
Whatever...I dont really care either way, but regardless of whether you see them, they exist.

"except for certain people elsewhere who think it makes them important in their own little world"
As in people not on THESE boards.. elsewhere.. starts with a K, ends with E or A, middle part is dufus. Anyway...
Like I said, I think our definition of clique differs. I see friends sticking up for each other, you see an alterior motive in their efforts. I'll just agree to disagree.

The only time I check the offical boards is if I see a link here to a change/announcement that interests me - or if I see news in game that interests me.
I think there's obviously political cliques here - but other then that I don't see too much.
Anything you post might be given the thumbs up or down at any time by anyone. Differing opinions, I think, is one thing that makes this board great. Differing opinions is what got me pwned from the SR. That and a photoshopped picture of Klaive holding a kitty.

Jacina's player is a bitch towards me and her characters are all bitches towards my character  Whatever floats your boat...it's all words.
She wasnt right about it because, as much as your bluntness and your insults amuse me most of the time, you didnt offer anything to the conversation at hand - threfore there was nothing you could have been right about in that discussion...therefore if it wasnt because she was being cliquey, then it was because she was being a bitch. Just to add, the official boards are an excellent source of profession and mechanics information. Staying current with your prefered profession folder can be a chore, though will certainly give you a better understanding of the direction the class is heading.
Also, you are in near constant contact with GMs on the official boards. If you have a question and are patient, you can get the answer from the source. While they are not ALWAYS correct (Cough 705 cough), they are still quite reliable.

Yeah, I'm over it. Snowdrop, if I give the vibe that I "pick on you" well I'm sorry. The only interactions I have ever had with you IG have been that you wanted to solve everything with PvP, which is not how I do things. I think Jacina has interacted with maybe...all of three times? Almost a year ago? I mentioned some things to people in OOC whispers, but yeah. I think the way you handle shit in the game is lame.
It sounds like you have some issues about insecurity. If I disagree with you on the boards, I disagree with you...on the boards, it isn't a slam towards you just because I think handling everything with attacks IG is retarded. As is not being a fan of international adoption. If you want to discuss this more, send me a U2U.
That being said...
I claim Artha in my clique.

If I want to quote, I use the quote button, so if I do the fast reply..... I can't quote less i copy an paste.
:::mutters:::: To many message boards! ;-)
How's Auriia ever gonna level if I keep reading an posting. ;-) No copy and pasting necessary as long as you use the quote button. Once you get into the text screen you can copy and past there. I'm not too good at explaining this stuff so just ask and I'm sure someone will extend a hand. :saint:

I'll read the official boards on occaision, but I never post there anymore...too many headaches involved, too many freaks (and for me to call another a freak, they must have a serious problem), I might post more on it later as a "Why fucking me?" thread.
As for cliques, I notice three groups.
1) The Question Authority Group. Most of those also post here, I am sure.
2) The Quiet Followers. They occaisionally ask a question, occaisionally get answers.
3) The Simutronics Groupies. These folks have their tongues so far up the bum of any and all GM's that they have the uncanny ability to tell how salty a snack food each GM prefers. They wouldn't question authority if it had them bent over a table and oiled up for the job. In fact, they would most likely post how wonderful a job of it the GM made, after which all their friends would proclaim their luck at getting oiled prior and congragulate them on such.
