View Full Version : ode to electricity

Francis passed though and we were without electricity for 50 hours. Charlie left us without for 12 hours, not to bad. We were prepared, water, food, ice and batteries stocked up, but after the first 12 with Francis it was terrible. No A/C, no tv, huddled around the radio and watching the winds tear up the place. Wondering where how bad it was going to get, remembering the destruction of Charlie and praying it wouldn't get us that bad.
At first it wasn't that bad I put a turkey in the oven thinking that it wouldn't hit us bad and we would lose power for at least 12 hours, so my answer to stress is to cook. I started to put a Thanksgiving dinner on because I wanted to give thanks that we were getting a Tropical Storm rather than a cat 4 storm. Halfway though the power went, no problem I put the turkey on the gass grill and finished the dinner on that. We feasted, our house was still relatively cool for hours after the power went, because the weather outside was windy, rainy and not sunshine. That night we opened the windows and the wind from Francis stressing but kept the heat at bay and the mosquitoes away. We played poker and drank a few, not to bad. The next day was the worse the heat settled, all the people in the house got cranky from the heat, cleaning up the storm damage (lost a few screens around the pool and alot of tree limbs down and found a new leak in the #@$% flat roof).
without Electricity, its hard to sleep, when you open the windows, you have mosquitoes feasting on your flesh (because they always find a way though the screens, especially when hurricanes tear holes in them). Without Electricity when the sun goes down, even when you have hurricane lamps, its hard to see.
Without electricity everything feels damp and dirty including you.
We had to close the restaurant down for 2 days, so it always hurts to lose money, especially since the few places that were open were raking in the money. Our place is in such a low area close to the water that we were mandatory evacuation, plus no electricity.
So all in all we came though pretty good, besides losing a lot of food that we had to throw because our freezers and refrig's were off for longer than 12 hours.
It makes me feel so bad for the people who were without electricity for weeks after Charlie.
Roughing it for 2 days without the basics made me really realize why Florida wasn't really the place to live before A/C. When the hum of electricity came back on yesterday we all were dancing and slept like babies last night.
Now to get ready for Ivan. I'm thinking generators.

I have to admit, I actually stopped reading after I read the words Hurricane Francis... Maybe you're referring to Hurricane Frances?

I would forget about buying a generator and think about buying a house atleast 200 miles from the coast.

Yea thats the one.

And yes it was more of an inconvenience for us rather than destruction. Yes, I'm very thankful that we didn't lose our house, our business, we are all safe and accounted for.The most we will have to shell out is for a new roof because home insurance in Florida sucks. If you claim most likely you will be cancelled, so unless you have a catastrophic damage its best to not to claim.

Psykos,

I live in Tampa and it is as bad as the newspapers show it. I was without power from 1pm Saturday until sometime before 10am on Monday. There are still thousands without power. There are still hundreds JUST in the Tampa area that have to live in shelters or with other family members. I was at my In-law's house on a canal to the bay and the water came up 4-6' above the sea wall. This flooded hundreds of homes JUST in this area and we were not even hit directly!

Don't tell me this isn't "as bad" as what you've heard until you live here. Thanks.

PS- Glad to see you are ok Myshel.

I'm glad to hear you came through without too much damage, hon. I was really concerned about you! I feel so much better now, knowing you're well and back to what passes for normal. ;)

When you, yourself, are in the midst of something like this you can comment on how bad it is, or is not. Until then, it's probably prudent to STFU!

However you spell it, Frances caused a lot of heartache for people who had already suffered through Charlie. Perhaps, just a touch of compassion might be in order.

Well it depends what part of Florida we're talking about. My family lives in South Florida (Kendall for you Miami folk) and they didn't get hit hard, just a lot of rain and wind that didn't really cause any problems. It was a very slow moving hurricane so it was just anticipation to have it end.

Yea, that was my point and now HarmNone is getting on my case.. Geeze.

Probably best you stay edgy, Psykos. I told you to take this private war of yours off the boards, and I meant it.

Our power was off till monday night, IT WAS SO HOT!

I stayed a friend's house further south until Sunday, and his power stayed on which was nice.

I know Miami wasn't hit that bad, but North Broward where I live was actually inside the hurricane cone and got some pretty good damage.

Mom called yesterday to let me know all's well in Boynton Beach. Lots of trees down, lots of damage, but not much "total deth & destrukshun" in her area. Electricity was out for a few days and they put a curfew on the entire city because of looting issues. One bank was robbed twice in the same afternoon, and there wasn't much anyone could do about it because no electricity = no alarms.

People with cell phones were shit outta luck once their batteries died, so I did the little "Happy Anti-Cell-Phone" dance when I heard about that.

She told us a couple of trees wrecked the roof of the house across the street and as a result, they had some serious damage to the furniture. But everyone was alive, no one they know is homeless as a result, and they're picking up the pieces without too much fuss.

She does miss her air conditioner though. I told her that's what she gets for moving to Florida.

What sucks is that Florida is already being eyed by another hurricane.

I didn't lose power at all. I was just stuck inside for a long time, but it certainly wasn't as bad on me as Charlie.
