View Full Version : Spike Thorn Immunity Leg Greaves
Finally back in stock:

How do they work? Well they're 95% resistant to nature, and they're leg greaves. You can wear them with any wood/leather/bone armor and when spike thorn is cast on you, it always hits the legs first. If you're prone... good luck, but if you're standing, these will defect 95% of the nature damage spikethorn dishes out. Essentially saving your life. They can also take warrior puncture resistance, which is a secondary damage type spikethorn can dish out, these do not have that put on them yet though, but many warriors will do it for free or just for the cost of materials.
This temporary protection should last for 400 some hits. If spikethorn usually kills you, or contributes to your death, what is the cost of 400 deeds? The time cost of having to recover from a death, spellup, etc? If you hunt something that spikes you can't afford NOT to buy these leg greaves.

Can you redo this post, but as a video like this?

That video was mildly amusing. If necessary, I will agree to fuck your wife if you buy some leg greaves.

Sounds good.
But I don't have a wife. Because I am smart.

I'm curious about these. Is there any chance you can get a test cast showing as such? heh.
Old log capped well trained ranger vs me, in greaves that also had the warrior fittings on.
Dozens of long thorns suddenly grow out from the ground underneath your feet! Several of the thorns jab into you!
... hits for 13 points of damage!
Your leather leg greaves seems to deflect some of the thorns.
Some ebon leather leg greaves with blackened vultite spikes partially deflect the onslaught of the puncture attack.
... 5 points of damage!
Minor puncture to the right leg.
... hits for 18 points of damage!

Doesn't spike thorn hit you in places other than the greaves though?

It starts at the bottom though, as I understand it.

Im confused though, does the damage not move up if it doesn't inflict enough? Reason I ask is, if I purchase these, great it blocked the 5 points of damage to my legs, but missed the 70 points to my face, what use is that.

I think if you're not prone, you're not likely to get that 70 point shot to the face.

Thorns will hit you in the legs until your prone and then can hit you in the face. If you don't get knocked over you don't get face gibbed.

Okay, so I grabbed a pair to try and am definitely not getting the same messaging:
With on:
Greycrown gestures while summoning the spirits of nature to his aid...
Greycrown gestures at you.
Dozens of long thorns suddenly grow out from the ground underneath your feet! One of the thorns jabs into him!
... hits for 13 points of damage!
... 10 points of damage!
Strike pierces thigh!
You are knocked to the ground!

No big change there for his cast, I may need to get a higher level ranger I think. And add some puncture resistance.

Is this a direct copy and paste? Why does it say "him" when it's from your point of view? I call shenanigans!

I wish I had thought of this back when fetish masters in the Rift caused me so much trouble.
As a halfling, one thing occurs to me: do some armor shops sell imflass leg greaves through special order? If so, wouldn't those be lighter?

Rangers can't apply resistance to metal items.
Okay, so I grabbed a pair to try and am definitely not getting the same messaging:
A more experienced ranger (I only have a pocket mule one) might be better able to answer why that person was only getting puncture damage against you and not nature damage. Spikethorn does do two types of damage though, and this only protects against the one type (but does it at 95%).

Precisely. Unless you're prone they'll always start at the feet and work their way up.

Pereus, are you wearing armor above brig? (I expect you're in plate.) You can't get 620 resistance if so. It's designed for leather armors brigandine and below.

Subject: Resist Nature (620) Armor Accessory Update
Resist Nature, Ranger spell 620, has been updated to allow the spell to imbue certain armor accessory items with resistance. Any armor accessory items comprised chiefly of wood, leather, cloth, or bone are eligible for resistance.
620 resistance benefits for armor accessories will only apply when used in conjunction with rigid leather torso armor or below -- no benefit will be garnered from wearing them with chain or plate class torso armor. However, armor accessories imbued with resistance via 620 will also not cause the typical reduction in effective padding when worn with crit or damage padded chain or plate class torso armors, while the reduction will still apply when worn with rigid leather torso armor or below.

I'll go misinformed...while you can't get ranger resistance on full plate, you CAN get it on a piece of auxiliary armor that isn't metal based, and still wear it over full plate (or partial plate) and get the same effect.
edit: according to krakii this won't work, but...is there in-game evidence to back it up not working? I thought these were separate processes.

That's not what I understand from reading the link BriarFox posted.
Although I could be reading it wrong.

Pereus just gave you proof, since I'm 99% sure as a paladin that he's wearing plate. Have him switch to brig for a minute and try it and voila.

Silly me for coming home from the bar and just jumping in on a convo without reading what has come before...certainly not the first, certainly won't be the last...with that said, having now looked back on the thread...It seems just such.

A single cast would not really prove a test. Spike thorn definitely has hidden rolls to determine effectiveness. Odd result that it appeared identical, but I'd say coincidence as I'd be surprised if you got identical results on two casts without the change in armor.
That being said, krakii does indicate this doesn't work as advertised, but there isn't confirmation through this "test".
I will absolutely volunteer to spike people to test though!

Even with randomness, he would have received the activation message for the resistance kicking it. He didn't.

As a warrior I've never been worried about spike thorn, it rarely lands when creatures cast it and is rarely an issue from capped rangers. I've had a few people cast it at me mistakenly while hunting bandits with little to no damage. I died from it once when Hoy cast it at me though but this was after an invasion, not only was I loaded down with loot but I got that unlucky message too.

Well, I think the misconception from the example is his example had warrior puncture resistance and thats the message we are seeing. Is the nature resistance just phantom?
Helsfeld
11-05-2013, 09:23 PM
no he was thinking nature resistance was working but it was not... you see it kick in like briarfox stated only thing that kicked in was puncture resistance
My mistake, I didn't know that wearing torso metallic armor disqualified armor accessories even if they were made of wood or leather.
Pereus hit me up in game sometime and I'll buy those greaves back from you.
