Buying m'lady a laptop or notebook for her birthday. Problem is I know fuck all about computers which has gotten worse the older I get.

She just needs something that can easily surf the internet, hold a bunch of pictures and be useful down the line when she goes back to get her masters degree.

Only thing she has told me is she doesn't like tablets. I don't feel like I need to break the bank but I don't want to get something shitty and useless either.

All and any help appreciated.

Everyone is going to have their favorite brands based on user experience and/or customer service experience. Truthfully they're all about comparable in my eyes. That being said my last 4 laptops have been Toshiba and I've been happy with every one of them. I'm currently using a Dell XPS 12 for work and I've got zero complaints with it (this is an ultra book that flips from laptop to "tabletesque" touch screen, might not be something you're after)/

Questions to ask yourself about future use with homework and what not for masters:

Does she do a lot of number entry and require a 10 key num pad on the keyboard (requirement for me)
Does she care about a wide screen (17+) for spreadsheets and shit
Is an included optical drive important

I'd start with something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216539 not too expensive, lots of storage, good amount of memory, could play games if needed, etc. etc. etc.

number entry is unlikely to be a big deal. Probably looking at a masters in education or public administration.

Wide screen wouldn't be super necessary.

Optical drive probably is.

What Anticor posted is spot on. It's pretty hard to go wrong on a laptop if you're only using it for work, just try to avoid paying more than you need to.
