Dropped him off for the last time this morning... won't see him again until he graduates. He's my youngest, so it was particularly difficult on my wife.

He's on his way to Seattle, then off to Camp Pendleton.

Thanks.

I was proud of him for making his own choice. Personally, that was hard for me because I pressed for college. He had a lot of options.

I told him I wouldn't sign off for him when he was a minor, and explained that if he was that hard set he could sign up for himself when he was 18, and until then, we would keep college plans moving. I knew that was just buying time. He's very persistent when he gets him mind made up on something.

The military is a good stepping stone into college with the GI Bill.

Protective services - PRP

I believe PRP is a branch of USMC Security Forces and if he gets that then he will end up in either Kings Bay GA or Bangor WA. There is also a small chance that he ends up in Washington DC at 8th & I or at Camp David. This is a good job in that you get an awesome clearance out of it, but he will by default be in the infantry field. He has the potential to end up in units with absurb budgets and get some awesome training out of it. Good luck to him and don't worry too much, he won't be in danger for years to come.

That should be pretty cool.

I'm kind of jealous. He's going to have a blast.

Although it was like 20 years ago I still remember heading out to Parris Island. What a trip. When we flew into Charleston S.C. and were getting off the plane there were 10 smoking hot chicks standing there holding a banner which read "Welcome Home Tracy, Charleston's First Playmate". We were eyefucking the area for sure until the DI's got us and made up stand with our noses touching the windows until the hotties left.

Congrats, you raised an incredible person. You and your wife should spend a bit of time patting yourselves on the back as well - not just anyone can raise a Marine.

Congrats and please thank him for his service for us. And thank you as well, for raising the kind of lad who has the guts to be a Devil Dog.

Thanks all.

I'm pretty proud of him, even if I would have preferred he go the college route, myself. He will do well. He's got a particularly strong and competitive spirit. He doesn't ever fail easily. He was so excited today, even though his 'buddy' had some paperwork problems at the last minute and can't start until next week... I thought that would really bother him, but he took it in stride.

Right now, I admit - I just want him back home safely, but I also know he will come back even stronger and more independent.

If your son is in Kings Bay, or Bangor, when I get my orders (trying for kings bay or Washington, want to be on a boomer{submarine}) I might see him..

I'll probably just get stationed here in Rotten, CT..

My little brother became a marine. My family and I went to his graduation. As a civilian it was not hard to tell that graduating as a marine is serious business.

Congrats. And thanks for the service.

Well, he'll be an 03xx, with the 81 as a BMOS. Security Forces have a 5 year active duty contract, so he'll spend 2 years in an infantry unit when he finishes his 3 years at one of the Security Forces dealios. He could end up in GITMO as well, not guarding prisons or anything though.

Camp Pendleton?

He should be going to MCRD San Diego, he'll go up to Pendleton for a few weeks (rifle qual and team week) but most of his boot camp will be at MCRD.

Hope he makes it!

Damn Hollywood Marines. (Even though I was stationed and Pendleton for like 4 or 5 years.)

And it was not a pretty sight.

I remember all the West Coast kiddies talking about how bad the hills were and all about the Reaper... And then when I saw the Reaper I started laughing. Of course, this was when I was stationed at Horno and the mountains out back were a lot larger.

Yeah I'll take the hills over the sand fleas.

Congrats! Pendleton is better than any other place he could go.

My dog is on Pendleton, he can go play with him and give him kisses for me. I miss him.

Heh, he won't really have the opportunity to go anywhere on Pendleton. He'll be in Boot Camp being yelled at and such.

If by recess you mean "Senior Drill Instructor Square Away Time" then yes. You just sit there for an hour and polish your boots and iron cammies and stuff. Although I guess they don't polish anything anymore and cammies are no longer ironed.

I got out of Navy boot camp in July, and on july 1st, the military started this 'NEW' approach, instructors are no longer allowed to yell at recruits, (for example, "You're a fucking piece of shit!") because it is a negative remark, only meaning to degrade them, and has no instructional purpose. So instructors caught doing so, will be reprimanded.. Which, I think was fucking bullshit, I was expecting to be yelled at the whole time, and my one RDC, was actually pretty cute, a year younger than me, and I just hung out in the fishbowl (RDC office) all the time chatting it up.. Yea, I never got a single hit on any inspections, and only missed like 3 questions on quizzes the entire time I was there, but I totally expected to get yelled at more..

More than the 'Martin, I'm bored.. On your face." Ooh, thank you Petty Officer Pretty..

Gelston

Congratulations! And as others have said, he is going to Marine Corps Recruit Depot(MCRD) San Diego witha couple of weeks in the middle at Camp Pendleton.

I enlisted in the Corps right out of high school, after barely graduating HS, 24 years ago, and today, after having the Corps send me to college, and later, for a Master's Degree, I'm still on active duty, but now as a Major. Things have changed a lot since I went, but much has still remained the same. Your son is going to have some of the most fun, and some of the hardest times of his life, both in boot camp, and beyond, as we are transitioning to a peacetime USMC, but still with multiple and many deployments around the world, and given the current global situation, peace won't last very long. He'll have the opportunity to do great things, and leanr many lessons, and hopefully, he will take advantage of that.

Semper Fidelis.
