Found this Gemstone addiction gem

Although you have received several letters from me, my identity still remains a secret. I understand that you will select letters that you deem appropriate for your site and I hope that you post this one for the sake of helping others. I wish someone would have done the same for me.

I was sad to hear about Mirken for I knew him well and if he knew I was writing this now, he would probably give me a hug and say hey pal, its okay. He was always a nice guy. I started in GS quite sometime ago, atleast 5 years. While the overall atmosphere was quite overwhelming, I enjoyed the fact that there were real people in those other bodies and I could become someone special to them and to myself as well. I lived each day in gemstone with a special unique realness that I myself had assigned to it. I clarified the imagery and the atmosphere, and I walked around seeing past the vague descriptions and making it more of a writer's world for I loved to write. Unfortunately, I became addicted.

At first I thought the addiction wasn't there. I would spend anywhere from 3 to 8 hours at one time on the game and ignore my life around me. I have a wife and two children. My wife and I started distancing ourselves and in the latter part of my 2nd year in gemstone, she left me in separation because of it. I lost my boys too. I started calling in to work each day saying that I was sick, or with the worst of excuses calling in for two weeks with pneumonia that I never had. I placed a papa sahn chair up in front of my computer and an end table where I could put some soda or some snacks down on, and sat there with my cat and my pillow and started to play non stop. When I became too tired to keep my eyes open, I fell asleep in the chair and would wake up an hour later and sign on again, continuing along. Hours on the game then seemed like days, and the worst stint of time I stayed on consistently without so much as a 30 minute break was 68 hours concurrent. I would break only long enough to throw myself in the restroom and then to gather more snacks and drinks. Because of this, I lost my job. I still stayed on the game. When the worst came, I lost my cable, and then my phone. I couldn't play anymore. Then a lightning storm took my VCR and my modem and I stayed home and locked myself in crying for a week. My closest friends became worried about me and came to the house to try and lift me out of my depression but my REM sleep had been depreciating for so long, I couldn't think clearly anymore. During that time, I almost killed myself. I. . I didn't think I could ever do such a thing to myself because I valued life so much, but it was so hard, and I hurt inside so much. I managed to go to a counselor and after she spoke with me, she was aghast. She had never heard of gemstone and decided to look into it on a personal note (she probably got addicted to it herself), and after I realized that she wouldn't be able to help what it was I was missing, (I missed the damn game), I went out and got another job. I stayed off of the game for 4 months, and got my life back in order. My wife called me and we decided to start talking to each other again, and since she was miles away, I finally said I would talk to her via AOl and she then suggested that she try the game herself and become my wife on the game. She wanted to know what I was living in there and this seemed like the most cost effective way for us to talk for such a long time. My wife became addicted. She stayed on the game for 11 hours during a normal day, and I stayed alongside with her. My parents payed my apartment bills out of love, and I took in a roommate to help with some of the bills.

We eventually got back together, and through the toughest of times, we are still with each other and both playing the game a great deal. I would like to say that I do not smoke, nor drink, nor do drugs, yet Gemstone is to me like heroine is to an addict. I don't think I could ever stop playing the game, and I now have 3 lords in my account as well as 2 other characters close to titling. The levels of my lords are 38, 31, and 27.

The saddest thing that ever happened to my family though happened 4 months ago with my oldest son who is 13. He had been playing two of my other characters on my account and became addicted to the game. He went into a very depressed state and attempted suicide when we took the game away from him. He is now in a full time residential facility 4 hours away from us, and has been there for 3 and a half months now. I miss him, and feel responsible for getting him involved with gemstone in the first place. He told me the other night when he called me that he missed all of us and wanted to get out of there so badly, but the only thing I heard that broke my heart was the last statement he said to me: Dad, I can't wait to play gemstone again. ::sighs sadly:: I'm sorry son, god damn me I'm sorry.

Friends close to my family are sympathetic to our plight of trying to make ends meet. They tell us that we should sue Simutronics for causing an addiction that hurts children and the like. If you parents are reading this, please, please remember my warning to you:

DON'T LET YOUR CHILDREN TOUCH THIS GAME!

Don't let it corrupt and pull out the life within yourselves either. It deadens the spirit, and increases pain over years. Five years of my life are gone now, and each day is a regret yet still I play. I am worst than my wife for one reason only, she thinks that I have control over the game and myself. In truth my sweet darling wife, I feel damned beyond reason. And I'm fighting so hard right now just to stay alive.

When the game was about to be taken off AOL, some players began complaining in the AOL GSIII forum that the game owners should be legally forced to keep the game on AOL. Why? Because these players were addicted to the game, and in their view it wasn't right for the game to be removed. You may laugh, but these players were completely serious.

Oye, I remember some of those bills. I think my biggest bill was $800 in a month, and I probably had a few others that were 300-400. When the 20/20 plan came out on AOL there was much rejoicing, and then the unlimited plan came out and there was cheering around TSC.

I'm glad I was too young at that point to know about the game. I think I played a little on and off since 99. Everquest was my main jam but I was too afraid of my parents to play anything that would run up a hell of a bill like that. Not so afraid I silent et up in the middle of the night and play...fuck AOL for sending hours of usuage when you have an unlimited plan. Parents went crazy on me for that...even if my first excuse of "that's the best time to download music" worked for a bit. I remember the one time I ran up a $40 long distance bill. That was it for me...

In the AOL days there were a number of people who got seriously addicted. I don't find the above story hard to believe, although I cannot vouch for it personally.

At my worst on AOL days my 3 month total was just under 2100. Considering I was working a part time job at the time, I think it pretty much took up my entire paycheck for 3 months. I understand there are certain pressures forced on people by society, humans are social creatures. This does influence the way people are raised and live, sure. However, in the end, every choice a person makes is their own.

I'm sure this guys paid for his addiction plenty of times over without heaping some random assholes judgement onto him.
