Okay so I have literally 18 hours trying to log into Gemstone today. I have read all the current threads on people having similar problems (and by the way, very few of them came to completion, so I'm really hoping I will get responses and can get it fixed...) and I cannot figure this out.

Today all of a sudden, when I logged into lich I got an error that I could not find much resolution on. I can't remember exactly what i twas but it started with ----- and had something to do with caster has too much of something, or spellup has too long of something, or something along those lines. There was only one thread on Lich that talked about it, and the suggestion was to log in using the website, log out, and then restart lich and it worked for the person.

For me, not so lucky. The error would come up, same as before. The symptoms were that I had absolutely no control over lich while in the game. I could occassionally see someone messaging on the ;lnet chat lines but I could not initiate a lich command of any kind. Could not start scripts, could not end scripts, could not update, could not do anything. I am using Wizard by the way, no interest in using Stormfront.

Eventually, I gave up trying to fix the problem, and I uninstalled Wizard, uninstalled Simutronics launcher, uninstalled ruby, deleted the lich folder, deleted the ruby folder, deleted all downloaded and temporary files, deleted maps folder, restarted the computer, installed simutronics game launcher, launched wizard using the website which reinstalled the wizard, quit back out of GS, downloaded ruby, installed ruby, downloaded lich.zip or whatever it is, extracted it into the same folder ruby is installed in, and then tried to launch with the new lich launcher I had just downloaded...

All of this and now I have the symptoms of... using the website - game launches. Using the lich launcher - game does not launch, it does prompt to allow program yes/no, I click yes, nothing happens. On the website, I click yes and Wizard launches and I am in the game. If I go back to the Lich Launcher, click ont he install tab, click restart lich as admin, then log in it will launch the game. No errors on game launch, but updater never finishes. Also, shortly after game launch and connection, game does not seem to respond to regular commands such as "look" "exp" "south" etc. Lich scripts, commands etc. also not functioning or responding. Even "quit" does not work. The game however does continue to send data to me, I still see NPCs/Mobs walk in and out, I saw my character get beat up and killed by the monster in the room, but could not move, look, run away, nothing. Close Wizard using the top right X, reopened and I can put in "look" and get a response from the game, but after a few seconds, again everything becomes non responsive, but the game is still going.

I am using Windows 8 on a fairly new Toshiba laptop (not a table or a tablet laptop conversion thingy, regular laptop computer). Ruby/lich/wizard/etc. are all current versions being offered on current download. Any suggestions or help would be very much appreciated.

Since you put the Lich folder in the same folder as Ruby, Lich will not be able to create the files needed to log in unless it's running as admin (assuming the Ruby folder is in Program Files or anywhere that's only writable by admin). On Win8, it may or may not have problems anyway unless it's running as admin. It shouldn't need admin if the Lich folder is in your Documents folder or somewhere like that, but reports from Win8 users have been inconsistent.

For the game/Lich not responding to commands, try deleting updater.lic. If that doesn't help, try renaming the scripts folder so no scripts are found and see if game commands and ;help work.

Woot! Okay so removing from program files negated the need to run as admin, and then for some reason as for the unresponsiveness I renamed the script folder, started lich, put the script folder back, then ran the updater, and now its all working.
