View Full Version : Warrior Archer

My warrior is able to train in another style of attack, and have decided to give Archery a try.
Is this a viable path with 1x hiding for a warrior?
Will it be able to hit hard enough to kill with one shot?
Which skills affect range weapons (ie. perception, ambush)?

It's very viable.. even with a warrior ;)
Core skills for ambushing are:
Ambushing
Perception
Ranged Weapons
Hiding is nice because you can snipe from the shadows. 1x training in hiding will make it more difficult to hide in front of like age critters, but you get no bonus (like the pushdown you get from ambushing from hiding) for sniping other than being protected by the critter not seeing you.
For critters, look for anything not wearing heavy armor because arrows are less effective against them. I would also avoid critters that are puncture proof.

That amount of hide/stalk training probably won't let you snipe from hiding with any amount of reliability.
Nice strong warrior could carry a pair of pre-loaded crossbows to fire at the onset of any fight which can be quite an advantage.
The perception is most important for sniping from the open while ambush is for sniping from the shadows. However going 2x in both will let you gain the max benefit from the Ranged Bonus.

Will this plan work?
1x perception
1x ambush
2x ranged weapon
1.5x hiding
This is what I am planning for my warrior on top of all his core skills.

It will work, but he will never be the best archer around. You will have less AS and aim worse than a like level archer.

Don't bother hiding as a warrior. Even at full 2x you won't be nearly as effective as a rogue or ranger at any level. You're chances of successfully sniping will be low as hell for the first 30-40 levels or so.

What's the formula for AS for ranged weapons?
Is perception that important?

I can't remember off hand, but its every rank, over 40 (maximum of 2x ranks per level, so 3xing perc won't make any difference) will increase your DS.

DS? So Perception has no weighting for AS?
I know that Perception is used for aimming. However, if it's not used for AS, then it's a different matter.

It is used for AS, same with ambush.

So, both Perception and Ambush is calculated in the Ranged AS?
Now I really need to find out what the formula would be.

(Dex + Agl)/2 + (Perception - 40) + Ambushing
Or something like that.

Are you sure it's not ambushing - 40 as well?

Yes.

This formula seems flawed and must contain another variables/limitations.
If 3x in perception does not gain any additional benefit, then there must be a limit on perception.

Yes, 3x in perception only benefits aiming. However, warriors can't so I didn't bother. That's the equation.

Alright thanks,
Xinister has become an Archer.

ok the ranged AS equation is this
Dex + ranged bonus + Bow/arrow enchant + ((ambush - 40) + (Perception - 40))/4
so lets say you had 20 bonus in dex 150 ranged skill and 44 ranks of ambush and percep
so its 20 + 150 + 0 + ((4 + 4)/4) = 172 that would be the AS with a non enchanted bow or arrows

Ah, I knew ambush was -40 as well.
Artha

WTF. That means melee weapon users are going to have a higher AS all the time because CM isn't -40.
StrayRogue

No. Ranged AS will be more in the long run because normal AS is only Weapon Skill + CM skill whereas Ranged AS is Ranged Weapon Skill + Ambush Skill + Perception skill. It isn't -40, it just means that those skills don't add to the AS until you have 40 ranks in each.

You're right, I had the CM thing fucked up in my head. The archer who 2xes ambush/perception starts having a better AS at 40ish.

Uhh. In 90% of the cases ranged AS is lower than melee AS unless you kneel with a crossbow. Take a level 100 Human rogue as an example, with 30 STR bonus and 25 DEX bonus, doubled in perception and ambush, vs. doubled in CM with a weapon.
Melee:
302 weapon skill bonus + 30 strength bonus + 50 weapon bonus + 35 societal bonus + 101 CM bonus = 518 AS
Ranged:
302 weapon skill bonus + 25 dexterity bonus + 50 weapon bonus + 35 societal bonus + (202 ranks of ambush + 202 ranks of percetion - 40 ranks of ambush - 40 ranks of perception)/4 = 302 + 25 + 50 + 35 + 81 = 491 AS
Ranged loses.

Ah yes, I forgot the /4 issue. However, the -40 isn't -40 AS as Aone originally thought.

I'm just going to stop talking.
