I have a close friend who is getting married in Karachi soon. I am trying to decide whether or not to make the trip. Has anyone traveled there recently as a US citizen? What do the military guys think? He's from a wealthier family in an upscale neighborhood in Karachi (Defence if anyone knows the area), but I am worried about reports of attacks/kidnappings on US citizens and still have to get to/from his house etc. The state dept. travel advisory does not inspire much confidence, but actual attacks mentioned seem fairly infrequent and mostly in more rural areas, and I'm cognizant of them probably erring on the conservative side.

I'd absolutely not go. I was there a year ago and it was a mess/very scary for Americans.

As neat as it would be, if you are a white guy, I wouldn't. If you do decide to, though, make sure you inform the Embassy that you are going and inform them when you arrive, where you'll be staying, all that. Just know if something bad happens there may not be a lot they can do for you.

Thanks for the input. That's the way I was leaning as well. There's always the bachelor party
