Margaret Thatcher's son, Sir Mark Thatcher was arrested for allegedly funding a coup in some african country.
Aparently he can get 15 years in prison.

Burning question for me is:

What fucking dolt made him a Sir?

Surely knighthoods come from providing some kind of public service worthy of award, not from being a useless waste of space?

I'll defer the question to Sir Bobmuhthol.

I don't know the ins & the outs of the case but Sir Mark Thatcher maintains he is innocent. Equatorial Guinea is a country that the leader took power in a coup (see military) in 1979. Here is what CIA factbook says about the country.

"Equatorial Guinea gained independence in 1968 after 190 years of Spanish rule. This tiny country, composed of a mainland portion plus five inhabited islands, is one of the smallest on the African continent. President OBIANG NGUEM MBASOGO has ruled the country for over two decades since seizing power from his uncle, then President MACIAS, in a 1979 coup. Although nominally a constitutional democracy since 1991, the 1996 and 2002 presidential elections - as well as the 1999 legislative elections - were widely seen as being flawed. The president controls most opposition parties through the judicious use of patronage. Despite the country's economic windfall from oil production resulting in a massive increase in government revenue in recent years, there have been few improvements in the country's living standards".

Having been to Africa and seen it up close and personal including meetings with Gov't officials in different countries I can say African Governments and systems of Justice operate nothing like those in devloped nations. It will be an interesting case, even if he is guilty his motives may have been altruistic. I am not excusing just saying.

Well, no one really 'made' him a Sir. His father was a Baron and he inherited the title when his father died last year. A lot of titles are hereditary unfortunatly.

Personally, I would wager that he did have something to do with the attempt to overthrow the government in Equatorial Guinea. Apparently the president got really rich through oil and some people wanted it for themselves. There are a few other South Africans and Americans in prison over this too from what I read.

His mate was just found guilty of trying to buy weapons so things are looking pretty grim for Thatcher
