I just got done purchasing 400 dollars worth of books. FOUR HUNDRED. Thankfully it isn't really *me* who is paying for it, but can you imagine trying to tell your father you wrote out the check he gave you for that much on a bunch of bound pieces of paper!?!

Anyway, I have the luck of hauling around 13 different books for my 18 credit hours of class. YUCK.

I spent 100 bucks on t-shirts for a deployment I just found out yesterday I shouldn't be doing, but my chain of command is abunch of chickenshit motherfuckers who don't have the balls to stand up to a Specialist and instead do backhanded shit like little kids . No, I'm not mad. not at all

www.bigwords.com will save you a lot of money on college books.

Never buy books on campus.

Yeah, I found out today that my 84 dollar art history book could be purchased online for around 30 dollars. Unfortunately since I unwrapped the plastic cellophane around it I can't sell it back for full price so it wouldn't even be worth the trouble to order it.

Next semester will be different. I'll be graduating after that (hopefully!) and it wont matter after that. All my previous semesters were composed of mostly studio classes so you were spending almost that much in art supplies.

Nice thing about that is I end up using all of those eventually.

I don't buy books for my classes. I learned that lesson in my 1st year.

Shari

I have 3 art history courses, and 2 regular history courses. I don't think I'd pass without at least a few of those books.

I paid 700 my last semester, so quit your bitching. Thankfully I won a 200 dollar gift certificate to the bookstore.

you gotta go on amazon to buy your books. They cost about half there what they do in the school bookstores.

When I was in junior in college (back in the dark ages 1977-1978) I assited with a solution manual for a calculus textbook.

I was paid around $100 which worked out a little under a $1 hour.

I think that covered the cost of my text books for the entire year.

I seem to recall that the royalties for the authors was under $1 per textbook (which they had to share). I'm not sure who is making the money on textbooks, but I don't think it's the people writing them.

Money and Banking (ECON 341) - $280

ONE fucking class.

I never bought books. With most classes it was pointless to buy the book, so I never bothered getting them. I learned the first year when I spent a ton on books, only to realize I didn't really need most of them. So from then on I would go to the first couple of classes, and then see if the book was actually needed or not.

I'll spend probably like 100 bucks on books. I wait until classes start figure out which books I'll actually need and then those I'll usually split with a roommate or good friend in the class. Makes life easier

Classes start in 3 weeks and I haven't bought any school gear yet. :( Majorly procrastinating.

My 2nd year we used to share books around the dorm.

Total cost for books that year - $40

The only time it was inconvenient was during finals.. but even then it wasn't so bad.

$40 < $500

My 1st year I spent $411 on books.

2nd & half of my third year -- $0 , due to the palace of roommates, letting me borrow/steal books from em.

Why college sucked for me is they charged a dime a copy, including computer lab paper. I learned quickly to do my work....at my work, Office Depot isn't going to miss a few < thousand > sheets of paper.

08-27-2004, 06:54 PM
heh if I don't get like atleast a good deal...

forget that I'm keeping the book and selling it to someone that needs it...

book sells at full price, they buy it back 25 percent of the price and sell it for 50 percent...

or something like that...

my 199.95 accounting 1 and 2 book was gonna sell for like 37.00 heh sold it to someone that wanted one for like 45.00 <grin>

Welcome to Westville Brimz! If you have a car or don't mind using public transportation (which SUCKS in Connecticut)...

Check out the beach in West Haven. If you're driving, go past SCSU to Whalley. Take a right. Where the road splits so you can go straight or bear left, bear left. Go up the hill to a funky intersection with a stoplight, take a left. That's Forest Road.

Follow Forest to the next funky road split, bear left. You'll be in University of New Haven territory there - follow that all the way down to the beach. It's maybe a 10 minute drive if you're not trying during rush hour.

If you wanna go shopping, bear right at University of New Haven area instead of left. That's the Boston Post Road and it's strip-mall heaven (or hell) all the way into Stratford. The Boston Post Mall is there too - it's a Westfield now I think, not bad, decent food court.

If you wanna stay in walking distance, go to the end of SCSU to Whalley and take a right to Westville Village. Not much there, but some neat antique shops and a few decent places to eat, and a couple of local bars as well.

Taking a left on Whalley will get you downtown New Haven, and Yale University but you have to pass through some "questionable" neighborhoods on the way so you're better off driving or taking the bus.

Avoid Dixwell Avenue or Goffe Street on foot - you're near one of the less pleasant neighborhoods there.

Down in the Chapel Street shopping area, don't miss Mamoun's Falafel Palace on Howe Street. It's open early, stays open late, and only closes one day a year. Best damned homemade Syrian food in the world, and it's near the Group W Bench, a hippie store that's been around since the 60's.

For culture, there's zillions of museums and art galeries; the Peabody Museum of Natural Science on Whitney Avenue.. and on Chapel Street there's Yale's museum of Architecture, another for fine art, another for british art, and a lot of local artists' galeries on Audobon Street and in the Ninth Square district.

Good luck and have a blast - maybe I'll see ya at Claire's Cornercopia some day!

Hehehehehe...

I counted them.

9, yes 9 wasp nests outside my dorm room. My roommate is also allergic to them. There are some dead ones I killed with my shoe decaying on the radiator.

There are also strange looking spiders and lady-bugs up the wazzoo everywhere too. My room is like the fucking jungle.

College rocks. Our Adventure Sports club goes sky-diving, snow boarding, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking .. etc.

I love Nevada.

Also, on the topic of books - My mother runs a college book store in her basement, where she's got a massive amount of college books stacked on rows and rows of shelves. She sells them on e-bay and amazon.

I just flip open the cell, press 2 for speed dial, then list off the books and she ships them here.

So I generally pay $0 for books! :cool2:

Forget that. One of my friends from last year is in a building with wasps and these centipedes (I swear to God I'm not exaggerating) as long as my finger, with legs just as long shooting off in every direction. :axe:

At least 15 ladybugs died because they chilled out in my light until they burned to death.
