Okay, so I just played through Dragon Age Origins, Awakening, and 2... Again. I love those top down RPGs like that, you know... the NWN type stuff. I was looking at Shadowrun on steam, anyone played it? Worth getting? I got Drakensang 2 a few days back, but could really get into it. Anyone have any suggestions?

I never really got into the DA series, the world felt bland and cliched, and DA2's plot twists really pissed me off.

Shadowrun is pretty good, as long as you're not expecting Fallout 2.5. It's definitely a throwback to Baldur's Gate and Fallout gameplay though. You've got conversational skill checks and turn based combat (it follows pretty closely with the Shadowrun PnP if you've played it), but it was made by an indie studio in about a year so there are a few things they could have done better. For example, it uses checkpoint saves, which get annoying the further in you get, there's a lot of combat, and party members are basically along for the ride as the only character who can use skills is your PC. It's still a good game though, and people are working on custom campaigns.

Hah, I love the cliches! The world seemed fairly rich to me, but I'm also one of the types that goes around and reads every book, scroll, document, letter, bathroom graffiti I can find in the game. Hell, in Skyrim I collected all thew books I could find and made massive IG libraries and even have the books in alphabetical order. I get easily amused sometimes.

Check point saves? Sadness! I hate that!

I wish they'd make a NWN3 or something already!

I played tabletop ShadowRun for about two summers... It's actually very true to the original mechanics of the game. Very much like the old Baldur's Gates series being true to 2nd Edition, Forgotten Realms setting.

I only clocked about an hour into ShadowRun, til I had some critical error when alt-tabbing to save my bigshotting character from death. But it definitely appears to be a solid, story driven game. Definitely a throwback, but definitely worth the $15 or however much it was discounted. I'm looking forward to clocking some more time into it when I have the opportunity.

Games like Shadowrun are why more guides aren't available! And subsequently why I'm now asking donations for more guides... I WANT to play those other games I've been neglecting for a while!

You would probably like any of the Spiderweb Software games...Avadon: The Black Fortress is probably my favorite of theirs. It's very old skool and fairly scripted, but still fun imo.

BioWare and Bethesda games really frustrate me. BioWare is too much movie + 1 decision tree, and Bethesda is Sandbox with no consequence. Wish I could mash them both together. They got close in Fallout, hopefully the next one improves on that.

Is the Shadowrun one from Kickstarter? Didn't realize that was already a thing.

I'm really looking forward to Wasteland II, which should be near the end of this year I believe, and then on to Torment for those guys. Also the some of the other kickstarts should be getting near completion soon, Project Eternity is the one that springs to mind. I think that's next year though.

I've heard good things about Shadowrun, but it has some of the usual kickstarter issues- and you're looking at somewhere in the 12 hours range for the initial campaign. I'm going to give it a month or two for bug fixes, added features, and some user created content to come out before I get it.

Whirlin mentioned them, but have you ever played the Baldur's Gate series? I recently picked up the Enhanced Edition of the first game during the Steam sale, and I have to say it holds up pretty well. Haven't gotten to any of the new stuff yet, but what's there is solid. Alternatively, you can pick up the original and BG2 from gog.com for a small chunk of change.

Yeah, I played all those Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dales and stuff years ago.

And I liked DA2 Jace, I don't care what anyone says about it! It was dumbed down a lot from the first one, but I thought it was pretty solid. DA3 next year sometime.

I thought DA2 would've been great had it been given a bit more time in the oven. It was obviously rushed, with reused assets all over the place. Especially the cave areas and some other maps; you literally see the same map for several different caves, and it's almost as if they try to trick you into thinking it's different by changing the entrance room every time.

At least Varric was a cool supporting character. But fuck Hawke; I wanted to play as my Grey Warden!

They said with DA3 they won't be doing that reusing of maps stuff again. They are going to keep a lot of it similar to DA2 though. They liked the model and the game did good in sales and reviews. Most of the complaints about it came from people who were pissed that it was a large departure from DA:O.

The best part about that was the achievement for 'visiting the many caves of Kirkwall'. I rage so hard when that popped up - there's only one cave!

I did it once accidentally. Went into the brothel, saw a quest marker above an elf, and suddenly, with no confirmation or anything, was jackhammering him in his room.

Spoiler alert on a 3 year old game! But really, nothing compares with the plot twists - Orsino collaborating with your mom's murderer and becoming a blood mage (every fucking mage is a blood mage), then Anders blowing up the church and whatshername going full Sephiroth. Fuck that game in the goat ass.

Have you played Dark Souls? I have put a few hundred hours into that game and I really enjoy it.

I think the RPG genre has a great outlook over the next year or so. Upcoming we have Ryse, Dark Souls 2, DA3 and Witcher 3.

Yeah, I played both of those years ago. They were fun, but I just can't do it now due to the graphics. I can't get into a game with dated graphics, which, sadly, most of the best RPGs ever made have now.

If you get BG1 and use TUTU it gives it bg2 graphics which isnt terrible.

Just saw a new Dungeon's and Dragon's slasher, it's arcade style, comes with two different campaigns. Burned a good 30m just on the demo trying out all the classes and both games.

Is that Dragons Crown? Kind of looks like old DND Tower of Doom.

I was following a game called Chaos Chronicles, It had so much potential was scheduled for a summer release this year. But there has been a clusterfuck between the publisher and the developer. Looks like it will be going to Vapourware.

Might and Magic has a new one coming out, it's on steam right now for early access. Personally I don't pay to beta test games, but it could be good.

If you are talking about shadowrun returns. Its alright. The save system needs revamped. If you go into it expecting something like the old sega/snes shadowrun games then you will enjoy the game greatly.

The big poing to me is the user generated content. There is a group of people who are converting the shadowrun books into playable content. Importantly their level editor is the same editor that they used to create the game so if you have the skill you can create very good stories.

overall I enjoyed the game, however im a huge fan of shadowrun and I loved the snes/sega shadowrun games.
