I'm sure many of you remember when Simu was offering in-game character portraits, having struck a deal with a little studio called NuView. The mixed results of this short-lived collaboration are contained herein. This is the Hall of Shame and Fame but Mostly Lame.

That is one of the reasons I am wondering if Wexna is still around, the contact link on the website is to her email. The verb list needs updating, e.g. the recently mentioned MARK is not there.

Plus she still owes me a portrait, not that I am expecting to collect anytime soon.

I absolutely hated the way that came out when it was first finished and had the artist go back and tuck some cleavage in (yes that's the tucked in version). I was never really happy with it, and I'm glad I can hide it today. =p

Given the size of the player base, it would not be that hard to assign someone to assess portraits done by outside people and have them connect to the game in the way these old portraits did. I've had some awesome portraits done of my characters over the years, including the most recent one by Tisket, and I'd love for more people to see them.

I was just looking at Wexna's website last night. It's still there, but I don't think she's done anything portrait wise in about 5 years. I emailed her about a year or so ago about getting a portrait of Saraphenia done, and she mailed me back saying that she was still dealing issues that caused her to leave the game at the time she left. She told me then that she hoped to be back to doing things in "about a year or so" but she's still nowhere to be seen.

Yeeeeeah, some of those pictures are... unfortunate. They remind me of pulp fantasy paperback covers circa the 70's, or before. Haha. It's almost like they've gone through terrible and come out the other side, reaching some strange plateau of fascination and horror.

You see Lady Saraphenia Silverglen the Battlechanter.
She appears to be an Aelotoi of the Mrae'ni Clan.
She is shorter than average and appears to be youthful. She has almond-shaped blue-black eyes and olive skin. She has waist length, glossy blue-black hair wound with a rope of rose vines. She has an oval face, an upturned nose and a generous mouth. A bunch of white oleander peeks out from behind her ear. She has a pair of long, bronze-veined, silver-hued wings.
She has a sleeping black dragon tattoo on her arm, a diving eagle tattoo on her leg, a soaring eagle tattoo on her neck, an angry red pixie tattoo on her chest, a golden lute tattoo on her wrist, and a soaring red dragon tattoo on her finger.
She is holding a slender mother-of-pearl backed hand mirror in her right hand.
She is wearing a silver-bound eahnor collar, a hooded black spidersilk cloak, some thin gold rose-etched spectacles, a sideless matte black leather dress cinched by a myriad of thin silver chains, a veniom bound lacquered swordbelt trimmed with silver, a series of multitiered gold and silver hip-chains, a braided silver waistchain, and a pair of bright white leather boots with raised silvery steel heels.

Here's a description of her collar:

Crafted of a single solid band of eahnor, the smooth collar is bound at regular intervals in silver. Set within each section of silver is a tiny fire opal, the red-orange color enhanced against the bright red eahnor. Inscribed within the silver, surrounding each opal, are different designs, including dragons and primroses. Interrupting the perfectly circular collar is a single large silver ring, clasping the collar closed, with a tiny matching silver lock holding it fast.

There appears to be something written on it.
In the Common language, it reads:

In the swordbelt are:

In the lacquered swordbelt:
uncommon,weapon (2): a faenor-edged vaalorn broad axe with deep crimson silk wrapped about its haft, an ora-tipped glaes backsword with dark crimson leather wrapped about its hilt.
other (1): a coppery gold steel key inset with a selanthan bloodjewel (the key to her collar).

I'd love to see if a portrait of Saraphenia matches what I see in my mind. :-)

It would be nice if someone did them in a format that wasn't the 3D style that Divone and Tisket do. I'm not a fan of that style at all (don't take it to heart Tisket, I still will sexually harass you whenever I get the chance).

They were. I won a discount at simucon though so mine cost like $90 or something.

I actually draw mine the old fashioned way, scan them and then sometimes paint them in photoshop. I just don't advertise it often because I'm crazy busy and some of my pieces I've been working on for years.

Someday if I feel like I've reached a point where I wouldn't be embarrassed to have someone actually use one of my illustrations as an avatar or whatever I might offer them up. But they can take anywhere from 10-40 hours to complete (high end if I paint them).

THAT is a very nice picture! I remember the AOL GS3 portal. I started playing GS about a year before the left AOL. Funny, I started out in Modus Operandi and then switched within a week to GSIII, waaaaaaaaaay back in 1997.

It's amazing what a bit of nostalgia hunting can dig up. I haven't played Gemstone in yeeaaars. WoW and then Life and Love and all that jazz kind of got in the way. Anyway, yeah, I used to do portraits when I had come back to the game back in... what, 2006? And that was after another long hiatus.

I had originally played on Prodigy, then went to AOL before the web portal opened up. I did a few drawings back then, one of them of Tyme ending up in the news paper thingy.

Kind of interesting to see the game is still kicking around, to be honest.

Merji's was the first drawing I had ever actually done of a character, and kicked off a series of works for people. Fun times.

I need to dig around and see if I can find the rest....
