Yeah, as much as we can laugh at adorable gifs of them stealing cat food and scampering away on their hind legs, raccoons are fucking vile.

Nathala Crane

They're ridiculously mean fucking creatures. I had one chase me at East Lake Park once. I sure as hell wouldn't have gotten my face close enough to pick up and toss the thing.

I used to feed them pizza when I lived in California.

Yep. My mom used to have a really big problem with them getting into her trash compartment (she doesn't have normal trash pick-up like most of us do - she has to store hers and take it to the dump herself) which was a big wooden bin attached to the side of her detached garage, behind her house. She had so much trouble with them breaking in that she had to put a padlock on it. They still got in by destroying the actual compartment lid itself. And one day she went out there and one of them tried to attack her. I forget how she handled it as it was like 203498 years ago, but yeah. Vile creatures.

I like the dogs expression when he comes back up the stairs. It's like, "I have one bad ass motherfucker owner"

Coon hounds don't wear collars. Why? Raccoons will use the collar to hold the dogs head under water and drown the fucker.

Sounds like an urban myth to me. Unless the coon hound helped the raccoon out by holding still? I doubt a raccoon would have the strength in their puny little arms to hold a large, unwilling dog still long enough to drown it.

What do you call an urban myth that occurs in the wilds, anyway? A suburban myth? Whatever, lol.

It's not an urban myth and large racoons can be 50lbs.

Baerlynd

Nope, it's true. Coons are very strong. I've personally had them tear the covers off of the battery compartments of deer feeders.

Unless you live by Chernobyl, they don't get more than 20-25 pounds. Coonhounds are what, 75 pounds?

Raccoons are strong for their size and for a wild animal they are very intelligent creatures.

That's really the horse you're going to back? A raccoon drowning a dog that outweighs it by 50 pounds?

Maybe if the dog was lobotomized and crippled first.

I was going to crack wise about how raccoons were the only major rodent not to be included in the Redwall series, but it turns out neither bats nor shrews nor moles nor hares nor weasels are rodents. Now I'm learning on a wish.

Even if the high-end of raccoon size can get up to 50lbs, that still means it's the high-end. Not the average raccoon size. DEAL WITH IT TISKET, JUST DEAL WITH IT.

You should do a portrait and incorporate some raccoons. ROUSes!!!

As someone who tied the state record for a coon (35 pounds), I'd be shocked (and a little scared) to see a 50 pound one.

Adult raccoons weigh 15 to 40 pounds, their weight being a result of genetics, age, available food, and habitat location. Males have weighed in at over 60 pounds. A raccoon in the wild will probably weigh less than the urbanized raccoon that has learned to live on handouts, pet food, and garbage-can leftovers. (http://wdfw.wa.gov/living/raccoons.html)

People use those stupid deer feeders (that isn't hunting), or dispose of trash irresponsibly, and they can get to rather odd sizes real quick.

I give you points for not using wikipedia as a source but I take away points for giving me a reason to go armed when I walk my dogs.

Also, I think the person who entered the information on that website was drunk that day.

Raccoons are ridiculous...they'd get in my trash can before I got a proper one, even when I put a goddamn flagstone on top of the can, they'd some how pull it off without tipping the can. Flagstones aren't light.

I finally caught him and he felt around 30ish pounds at least...I can't remember but he was heavy. Fucker barked like a big dog though. scared the shit outta me when I heard it he first time lol

he was bashing his head against the cage trying to get out...I have it on tape somewhere...

I hate raccoons, they are mean ass creatures... I had some in my attic last year and every night it sounded like there were grown men playing football. Finally got some people to come over and get them out, there was 5 of them. They tore up my duct work and AC unit up there and I had to have the attic cleaned and all of the overhang around the house replaced so they couldn't come back. They got in through a screen in the overhang that they ripped out.

Well, it does explain why usually it is multiple dogs for coon-hunting ... so they can protect/cover each other ... makes sense (like that one story of a dog preventing a coon from drowning the other).

Most of the dogs are wearing collars, so there goes that bullshit story that coon hunting dogs don't wear collars because super intelligent raccoons are drowning them with the collar.

Edit: to the rep of "wtf are you talking about, can you even read? The thread you linked to has one mention of collars in it and the dog was drowned." Browse the forum for pictures of the dogs, don't make me use your internet for you.
