Alright, we all know that the NBA salary situation (that is, CBA) is wildly inconsistent from year to year. This is true, Michael once made $30 million while Scottie made $10/hr, which is why the 1997 Bulls had so many playoff games. The person who attempts to describe a player's contributions vs. salary is a fool, but with God as my witness, I am that fool!!!

Let us count "contributions" as Win Shares (http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/ws.html). The top 10 career leaders: Kareem, Wilt, Karl, Michael, Stock, Oscar, Garnett, Duncan, Shaq, David Robinson. Surely these are among if not the 10 greatest regular season careers of all time, no?

Very good. Let us consider the entire careers of the rookie class of 1991. They accumulated a total of 8,748 million dollars in salary and accrued 940.3 regular season Win Shares; therefore, their various owners garnered 1.075 Win Shares per million dollars. All figures obtained via basketball-reference, which for some reason has no salary figures for 1990 and sometimes fails to include lesser figures for following years.

Let us also consider the year of 2013, where 20,450 million dollars resulted in 1232.4 Win Shares; therefore, .603 Win Shares per million dollars. All figures obtained via espn, which for some reason lists 510 players when only 469 players played at least 1 minute in the NBA in 2013, and lists 22 as paid by team "null Unknown", and I am pretty sure the null Unknown Ruff Ridaz are not an NBA team. What's also weird is the list of players...

Antonio McDyess, PF
Brad Miller, C
Jordan Farmar, PG
Shawne Williams, SF
Julian Wright, SF
Brent Barry, SG
Craig Brackins, PF
Jawad Williams, SF
Brian Cook, PF
Luther Head, PG
Jason Hart, PG
Da'Sean Butler, NA
Andy Rautins, SG
Robert Vaden, NA
Magnum Rolle, NA
Stanley Robinson, NA
Reeves Nelson, SF
Marcus Landry, SF
Deron Washington, NA
Manny Harris, PG
Bobby Simmons, SF
Travis Diener, PG

Some old favorites like McDyess, Miller, Farmar, Shawne, Barry, but then also some probably NBDL fellows, but obviously there are not nearly enough to fill the full NBDL, so...? But as it turns out ignoring them entirely gives a value of .613 instead, which is not much different.

I fully intend to go through every year in basketball-reference, as my initial thrust was to determine that NBA player who had made the most in salary over a full career, but for now let us consider two current players whose values are subject to change: Kobe Bryant, LeBron James.

Kobe: $249.3m, 173.3 WS: .695 WS / million
(if he generates 0 WS next year, this value will decrease to .619 due to the Lakers being stuck with his salary after amnestying Guacamole, or basically average)
LeBron: $110.1, 152.6: 1.386 WS / million
