After my short discussion on professions, including my employment path, I got to thinking. I stated that I am going to be taking over a Marketing firm after I recieve my degree in Business. I also am going to another school to get a degree in automotive engineering and certified in all that repair and engine stuff... I know that the real money is most likely sticking to my course in marketing, but cars have always been my passion.

So, I'm wondering.. How many people have chose or will choose to live out their passion rather than go a career that has a better chance at offering more money... or vice versa.

Cars like? You should've watched MTV today, lolz. The Stunt wars and such with the riders, hawt. Anyway, one team had a situation where they had to choose one or the other. They went with their passion. It all depends if you know you'll succeed in it. If you suck at doing what ever it is you wanna do with cars, then stick to marketing. What did you wanna do with cars?

I would definitely choose to live out my passion rather then to choose a career that I could potentially make a better salary... I'm a firm believer in the saying that if you have a job that you love, then you never have to work a day in your life...

Customize them. I want to open up a shop that does all customization in one place. Somewhere that has the capacity to do suspension work, engine work, exerior work, interior work, and audio. Rims, paintjob, custom inclosures... you name it. Call it, a one stop-pimp shop.
Perhaps open up some dealerships as well. I don't know. I know of a couple companies that make good money customizing cars... and I know their owners are pretty wealthy. I work on cars a lot, I've put over 300 hours into my boyfriends ride.

Recently I've:
Created and installed a PA system (custom mounting, speaker, base unit, and amp)
Completely dynamatted his car
whited-out his lights
instealled angel-eyes
installed new carpeting in my car

my latest project is a custom encloser that will fit 6 12 inch subs and 2-3 Amps using plexi-glass and fiber glass.

after that, I'll start work on customizing my new car :-D

Well...lots of competition for ya. You live in Seattle? It's all about finding deals and how good you can do it. Ummmm...if you can deal with the ups and downs, then go for it. I'd rather own a successful marketing firm though, heh. Why not be a millionaire and own your own shop all at once? Durrrr! A couple of my boys have shops. Ummm SpeedZone Motor Sports is one, he does ok business. Then T3 in Boston and Newton/Framingham, haven't visited them in a long time, but they have their ups and downs.

I could make a lot more money with my BARCH than working at an architecture firm by doing design firm stuff. 3d modeling or project managing or construction managment etc. all pay more. But they aren't what I really want to do I enjoy the actual design process so I'll take the pay cut and do what I enjoy.

I don't know. I've made some good connections in the industry already. Quite a few of the Tuningwerks (a pretty well known show-crew) are close friends of mine and have introduced me to a lot of companies. I most likely will start showing with them next year... but even now without being in a club or owning a shop I can get whole-sale prices on a variety of things. I love cars... But I am afraid in a way that I worked with them every day it may become a job rather than a passion.
At least I know marketing is a job!

It depends on the circumstances. I would love nothing better than to have my own farm or vineyard or restaurant/bed and breakfast and screw with cars at my leisure. Life dictates my family come first, so I'm a production manager in an industry that doesn't even facilitate my degree.

Cars .... I don't have the heart to scrap the Caravan or the convertible Lumina, so for now they're just dust collectors in many different pieces. Next weekend I'm picking up a convertible metro. The week after that it goes Frankenstein.

Here’s a photoshoped picture a few people came up with on a motor forum. It hasn’t been done yet so I’m going to take a stab at it.

10 second metro? So evil. I can’t decide on a color though.

Metallic blue.

That was one thought, the other was graphite-pearl.

The blue would be easier to work with for interior accents to complement the body color though.

Any shade of pearl looks like shit when dirty.

Trust me, the blue is you.

Oh Gods...cars, bleh. Good to know that you wanna continue with your passion hon. I stopped all that import scene when I was like 18? LOL! It was something I thought was cool when I was a teen. I say go with what you really want to do. If Import cars are it, then go for IT! Go you!

Heh, a 10 second Metro? You're going to have to have one hell of a blower in there...

I went for the dream. For 15 years I've been working towards joining a design firm to get into the creative end of things. Its difficult to take a pay cut when you get used to having so much money, but the work is much more satisfying, at least for me anyway.

Recently we won a major contract that accounts for 10% of the companys revenue over the next three years. What I'm proud of is being part of the team that won the contract. While I may not be making as much as I'd like, I'm really happy about my involvement. And truth is, I could live very easily on what I earn, I just live a little extravagantly. :) Oh, and this economy sucks.

Yeah, I'm curious as to how you expect to just become a head honcho in a marketing firm with just a BBA. Hell, most places don't even hire entry-level college grads, let alone hand them the company.

That sounds like a really cool car... if you were a junior in high school.

You need a boyfriend with a respectable car, and not the "Pussy Wagon".

Who said anything about a supercharger.

Lose the 1.0 3 cylinder, add a 1.3 DOHC turbo charged g13B ... With NO2.

Seattle, dammit.

I need someone to dynomat my doors.

Also looking at putting an LCD in the top bin. Something like this: http://www.forshockdesign.net/specvpc/specvpc-9.jpg

That easily flips down and away:

Pyramid scheme sales jobs can make you the head of "your own marketing firm." Trust me, enough of em seem to send me junk mail.

I'm going to try for the dream once I get a real degree. The thing is, not everyone's dream is something that will provide for one's family, for one's self, or a sustainable career. So it's very good to have something to fall back on, which you seem to be on the track towards.

Well, this may sound cheap but I'm just taking over my Mother's firm. My Step Father is currently selling his. I've been working with her since the beginning and I bring in a reasonable amount of clients. I also do most of the communications. It's not a huge firm - but it makes quite a bit of money.

And I know that the import scene is pretty youthful, but I am not talking about body-kit on hondas. I know and see many 30+ year old men driving nice cars that have been shaved, rimmed, and have added a system.

All systems that come stock in cars now-a-days are complete shit, any music lover usually sees the benefit of getting a new system.

Furthermore, there are a lot of companys that hire shops to create their demo models. Like this on GPS company who make a 10,000 dollar system hired a "friends" shop to install it on a few of their cars. I don't know - It's tough. There is a lot of competition... But nothing gives me more satisfaction than completely ripping a car apart and piecing it back together.

I like it. It's a 2002 Black Denali on Foose 23's. Shaved (no badges, no utility rack, no antennas). I mean, in many ways it's a wigger car - but he does try to keep it as elegant as possible and I think he does a pretty good job. There is nothing incredibly cheesy about it and it looks pretty damn good. He's smoothed it all out - roll pan, vent covers, wiper-cal. It's pretty sexy to me. He wants his next project to be a SL600 (though I don't understand how he'll be able to afford the mercedes and the denali).

In no way do I consider it a pussywagon. Especially since he does everything to his car completely for himself.
