Ok, couple of questions. I'm not huge up on the pirating of software..so I'm wondering..
Will installing XP home with my parents CD key cause problems?
If so, can anyone get ahold of a XP home CD key?

There shouldn't be a problem using an OS CD key. Otherwise people would have to buy a new CD every time they needed to install it again.
You will get one extra reinstallation while entering the key-code, meaning you can install it on any other computer 1 time.
If, however, you have a software fuck, and for some reason decide to call Dell, they will politely tell you in an Indian accent that they cannot do restorations on computers running pirated versions of Windows.
This of course, can be taken care of through BIOS.

Yes, but there will be two different ISP's connecting to the Microsoft website with the same CD key to update.

That won't be a problem until the 30 day trial is up and online registration has not been met...
...At which point things start getting rather interesting.

Ok, so can someone tell me what I gotta do here? I'm kinda at a loss. I have a computer that was bought from someone else. The XP home CD that came with it, is an upgrade CD. I was forced to format, and now I cannot install the XP that came with it.
You need the original start-up key, it's located on the bottom of the laptop that the winxp cd came from.

I don't have any of that. All I have is the tower, and a little CD case with the CD in it..and the code. But when I try to run the CD, it says it cannot install a new OS because there is no OS to upgrade.
go into BIOS and make the CD-ROM drive the primary boot device, then unplug the ribbons for the A and HD... There's much more to it than this, but I think that your CD has already been used more than once for reinstallation. At which point Microsoft will recognize a used keycode, and basically f you in the a.

Ok..thats not being very helpful.. I'm sure that makes sense to you and others, but that don't mean much to me. :(
I just wanna have a computer that works :(
When you right click on almost any icon and go to "compatability" what OS does it say is being utilized to run that prog?
Also, was the paper CD slip case opened or sealed when you got it?

Nothing, because my computer currently has no OS. It can't boot up, unless I start installing an OS.
The CD that came with the computer had no case of its own. It was an old Music CD case. This computer I own is a "zombie" computer home built. It came as is, with a WinXP Upgrade CD. I have the CD code for the WinXP Upgrade CD, but it will not install. When I boot to that CD, it atempts to install, then asks for a older vrs of Windows CD so that it can confirm I own a copy of windows. It never asks for my key.
I'm also pretty sure you need the product key, which you don't have.

Download a pirated version of Windows 98 from KaZaA.
Install it.
Now insert the Windows XP upgrade CD.
Install it using the CD-Key you used on your old computer. You will not have any problems doing this. I am running 5 computers in my house all using the Windows XP CD-key that came with my Dell 2 years ago.
Have fun.
if you have no OS, then enter BIOS by holding down on f6/f10/varies from comp, at the startup logo. Make the CD-Rom drive your first boot-up device, and don't use an upgrade CD, use a WINDOWS INSTALLATION CD.

Don't you still need to activate it with microsoft in the first 30 days with Microsoft? I've downloading a bunch of XP corporate ISOs that don't require activation but they've all been corrupt or something like that when I try to install them. I've got like 3 computers that had versions of XP on them but all got corrupted or "virused" in one way or another and I can't even use them because I don't have an OS.

You never have to activate your OS with Microsoft.
If you don't activate, you don't get to phone them and get technical support.
Oh no...

And also, this isn't an activation issue... it's just a registration issue.

I have a pirated version of windows XP pro, and I've never had a problem with it.
The version that came with my computer stops working after 30 days if I don't call microsoft... I think the corporate iso which doesn't have that in it. I've been trying to get that but no luck so far.

If you have an upgrade CD and no OS on your computer all you need to do is put an older windows CD installation disk in the computer when it asks for it. So yes you can do a clean install of XP by using for example a win2k or win98 installation CD. Once you do that use your CD key that you have.

HP in their infinite wisdom sent a CD with every new laptop they ship. The CD is XP Corp. It will work with any machine that has an Intel processor (that I've found so far, not sure why it won't work with an AMD but thus far this has held true) as long as that computer has the specs to handle XP. So basically I have a stack of coasters that have the potential to load XP corp. Ohh, another fun aspect of the CD it can be used over and over and over.
Just something to think about.
