Sunfist Prestige Points

I am a relatively recent convert to Sunfist, having sworn for years that I would never leave Voln. I love it. But I wondered what the benefit of 'prestige Points' was. Can the points be converted into anything useful in the same way that bounty points can or is it more like Fame points and not really important.
